LAHORE – The newly-appointed Lahore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Controller Nasrullah Virk managed to commit a blunder on the first day of taking charge by putting up a weird question in the class 9 Urdu examination, Pakistan Today has learnt.
Students, parents, employees and others have expressed their surprise over this ‘mistake’, saying that it was strange that despite multiple checking and counter checking, this question had gotten through.
“According to the rules, we are not allowed to look at the question papers hence I do not know how this happened,” BISE Controller Anwer Farooq said.
Students sitting for the Urdu examination enjoyed a lighter moment when a question in their Urdu examination asked them to choose who they thought runs their lives. The question asked: “What does our life depend on?” while the options read, Wealth, Religion, World and Zardari Sahib (the president of Pakistan).
After being informed, the BISE administration reached the Lawrence Road centre immediately. BISE officials said they were surprised that the paper had not been cancelled, adding that they suspected that since Virk was a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz aide that was why he had not cancelled the paper deliberately. Some of the employees were also of the opinion that the paper-setter and everyone else involved had only expressed their frustration and nothing else.
“I did not know what to choose,” said Rubab, a class 9 student, adding that her mates were confused also as to what was the right answer. “I have no idea why they have to make children suffer because of their petty politics,” said a student’s mother, adding that all those responsible should be brought to justice.
BISE Employees Welfare Unions Chairman Aslam Gujer said that it was unethical to include such a question in the paper and an action should be taken.
PPP CONDEMNS: Pakistan People’s Party leader Samiullah Khan while taking strong exception to the incident said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had set a bad precedence by using examination system for doing politics to malign his opponents. “It sends a very bad message to the Punjab government employees and such tactics will not harm the president’s reputation,” he said. The PPP leaders have convened an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss their response to the Punjab Chief Minister’s growing belligerence against the federal government.
BISE: According to a press release, the BISE has ordered an investigation into the matter. According to BISE PRO Qaiser Virk, examiners from DG Khan had prepared the paper and a committee had been set up. BISE Controller Anwer Farooq said officially he was not allowed to comment over the issue but added that just to maintain secrecy, they could not check the question paper. He said paper-setters were civil servants and they were aware of the consequence of such actions.
