RAWALPINDI, April 29: The Punjab government will distribute 7,500 laptops among students of the district at the auditorium of Pir Mehr Ali Shah-Arid Agricultural University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) on May 2.

Earlier, the ceremony was to be held at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will be the chief guest at the ceremony. He will also lay the foundation stones of some of the development schemes including a boys’ college building at Khayaban-i-Sir Syed.

A PML-N local leader requesting not to be named told Dawn on Sunday that the provincial government changed the venue as the cricket stadium was being managed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), a federal government entity and the PML-N did not want to rely on the PCB as it would not allow the Punjab government to organise a political function there.

He said the ceremony was delayed due to unavailability of the chief guest while laptops in Attock, Chakwal and Jhelum districts were distributed among students without the Punjab chief minister.

He said Maryam Nawaz, daughter of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, was to distribute laptops among female students at Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) but the function was
delayed due to her busy schedule.

“A total of 2,500 laptops will be distributed among the female students at FJWU,” he said.
