LAHORE, May 4: The Civil Lines police on Friday booked 763 schoolteachers, including 31 nominated, for lodging an agitation on The Mall despite a ban.

The FIR was registered under sections 290, 991 and 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Those nominated are office bearers and representatives of the Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) and the Joint Action Committee of Teachers (JACT), Punjab. However, no arrest was made.

Hundreds of teachers had protested on The Mall on Thursday and staged sit-ins demanding higher pay scales, better allowances and job quota etc.

Civil Lines SHO Abid Rasheed said the teachers lodged an agitation on The Mall despite a ban was imposed by the government on the orders of the Lahore High Court chief justice on Nov 2, 2011, on a writ petition filed by some traders.

JACT’s Punjab office bearers condemned the legal action against teachers and demanded the government to withdraw the FIR lodged against them.

They threatened to hold agitation daily outside Chief Minister’s Secretariat till the withdrawal of the case.
