Exam dates for schools, colleges announced
Karachi, Feb 08: The Secondary School Certificate (Class IX and X) and Higher Secondary Certificate (Class XI and XII) annual examinations across Sindh will begin on April 18 and May 16, respectively.

Moreover, the annual examinations of Class I to VII will commence on April 1 throughout the province.

This and other major decisions concerning the province’s schools and colleges’ comprehensive schedule of examinations, declaration of their results, commencement of new academic sessions, summer and winter vacations were taken at a meeting of the provincial education department’s steering committee on Monday.

The meeting presided over by Sindh senior minister for education Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq was attended, among others, by provincial secretary for education Naheed Shah Durrani, educational boards’ chairmen Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai, Syed Anzar Zaidi, Prof Haleem, Saeed Ahmed Siddiqui, provincial director-general (colleges) Prof (Dr) Nasir Ansar, director for private educational institutions Mansoob Hussain Siddiqui, representative of civil society Sadequa Salahuddin and senior officials of the education department.

Giving details of the decisions arrived at at the steering committee meeting, a spokesman for the education department said that to ensure that the new academic session for Class I to VIII would begin on April 12, 2011, all schools across Sindh would be required to conduct the current academic year’s annual examinations for these classes (from Class I to VIII) from April 1 to 8 and announce their results by April 8.

SSC exams: With regard to the Class IX and X annual examinations, the meeting decided that these examinations would begin on April 18 while all the secondary boards of the province, except for the Board of Secondary Education Karachi, would be required to announce the results of the examinations by July 31. The BSEK has, however, been told to declare results of the Class IX and X annual examinations by Aug 15.

HSC exams: It also decided that Class XI and XII annual examinations cross the province would begin on May 16 and all the examining bodies, except for the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi, would be required to declare the results of these examinations by Sept 15.

The BSEK and BIEK, according to the sources, have been given 15 days extra for compiling and declaring the results of Class IX and X and Class XI and XII in view of a larger number of candidates appearing in the examinations from the city.

New academic year: The meeting also decided that the process of admissions to first-year classes in the public-sector colleges in the city under the Centralised Admission Policy would begin on Sept 1 and the new academic session for first-year students would start on Sept 15 and that of Class XII students on Aug 1.

When the DG (colleges), Sindh, proposed that the principals of colleges send the examination forms of all Class XI and XII students to the boards whether they had met the mandatory requirement of attending 75 per classes, the education minister declared that examination forms of only those students be sent to the examining boards who had fulfilled the mandatory requirement of attending 75 per cent of classes.

Taking exception to the academic losses suffered by the students in the recent devastated floods and because of unnecessary holidays, he urged the officials concerned to ensure that the teaching process must continue till March 31 so that those who had suffered could be compensated to some extent.

Summer & winter vacations: The steering committee also decided that the summer and winter vacations in schools and colleges across Sindh would be observed from June 1 to July 31 and from Dec 22 to 31, respectively. Dawn
