PMA demands removal of Liaquat varsity VC
Karachi: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has called for the immediate removal of the Vice-Chancellor of the Liaquat University of Health Sciences, Prof. Naushad Shaikh, for his suggestion to establish an evening/night medical college.
“The suggestion to establish night medical college is on the agenda of PMDC meeting scheduled for April 4. It is feared that PMDC will approve this suggestion of “part-time’ medical education. “If this stupid idea is not dropped, we reserve the right to go to court’ PMA office-bearers Dr Mirza Ali Azhar, Dr. Qaiser Sajjad and Dr. Idrees Edhi said at press conference at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Monday.
The PMA office-bearers also strongly criticised the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) for authorising establishment of new medical colleges on a political and monetary basis and said that the PMDC was trying to destroy medical education in the country.
They charged that 80 percent of private medical colleges did not have complete faculty to teach students, yet they were recognised by the PMDC which amounts to deliberate destruction of medical education in the country.
Dr Mirza Ali Azhar, the Secretary-General of PMA, Centre, alleged that the suggestion by Prof, Naushad Shaikh to establish evening/night medical college was a “stupidity and an idiotic’ idea and would further deteriorate medical education.
“There are monetary motives behind floating such ideas and it is feared that the PMDC that is full of people like Prof. Naushad Shaikh who will approve this. We warn that if this idea is given approval, we will approach the court as we have started consulting our legal team’ he added.
The PMA office-bearers further demanded the PMDC’s restructuring in line with Supreme Court’s decision and further asked the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to monitor MD and MS programmes of medical universities.
Similarly, all appointments to key posts in the medical colleges and medical universities should be filled on merit instead of political basis, they demanded.
