KARACHI, March 4: Absence of elected local governments at the district, town and union council levels in the current transition period will not at all affect the ‘Hamara Karachi’ festival, which will be celebrated from March 10 to 24 in the city as usual.

This was announced by Sindh Local Government Minister Agha Siraj Durrani and President of the Hamara Karachi Foundation Ms Nasreen Jalil at a press conference held on Thursday at the Karachi Press Club. A detailed scheduled of the programmes to be held during the festival was also released by Ms Jalil, who served as the naib city nazim of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) dissolved recently on completion of its tenure.

Mr Durrani said the Sindh government had always supported CDGK’s measures towards the uplift of the province and betterment of its people. He held out the assurance that the provincial government would continue to extend the support and cooperation to such measures and programmes in future.

The minister also urged the media to give suitable coverage to the programmes. Earlier, Ms Jalil told journalists that “Karachi is home to different communities and cultures… at the moment, it is in a dire need of such cultural celebrations aimed at inculcating a sense of ownership into its inhabitants.” She said the event was introduced as an annual feature with a view to develop cordial and brotherly relations among all communities living in Karachi.

Cited by the World Bank as “the top reformer in its region and in the top 10 reformers globally”, Pakistan’s economy continues to perform a commendable growth as outcomes of its past fiscal year indicate a Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of approximately US$5.1 Billion, contributing to an increase in its annual growth rate of 6.6% in GDP for the last five years.  Clearly, these results show a strong confidence of players, both local and foreign, in the resilience of Pakistan’s economy amidst a series of domestic and external events of an unprecedented nature.

This impressive performance in the economy says so much about the structural economic policies that the Government of Pakistan has outlined and pursued relentlessly in order to restore macroeconomic balance and to improve the overall economic environment. Through prudent fiscal, monetary and exchange rate policies, financial discipline and consistent and transparent economic policies, a wide range of reforms was introduced in the areas of taxation, trade and tariffs, banking and finance, industry and agriculture, deregulation and privatization, fiscal transparency and governance. Indeed, they know their business more than anyone else. These efforts gained the interest of world industry leaders especially on the sectors of textile, machinery and transport equipment, food technology, minerals and lubricants, chemicals and manufactured goods like plastic, packaging and printing.

To date, Pakistan is a leading exporter of manufacturing goods as well as textile to bull markets such as US, UAE, UK and Germany. It is also a preferred market place for importers from China, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, US and Japan.

Pakistan’s economy is as powerful and strong as its population of 1.6B. It has gained its bullish momentum, and there is definitely no stopping it.

The 3P Pakistan 2010 is a product of significant collaboration among top players from the plastic, printing and packaging industries of Pakistan. Being its fastest growing economic sectors, these areas have gained enormous popularity from international players who are seeking for business opportunities in this part of the globe. PLAS PRINT PACK PAKISTAN 2010 is therefore committed to forge new as well as stronger business alliances between Pakistan and the rest of the world through an interactive showcase of cutting-edge tools and equipment, synergy of allied services for more networking opportunities and, most importantly, quality attendance of trade visitors from international and regional countries.

Lahore: The fate of trained graduate teachers (TGTs) has been again put on stake due to lukewarm attitude of the federal ministry of education that failed to take timely decision to regularise services of the said teachers working on contract basis in federal government educational institutions in the country. Their case is hanging in balance simply because of the lethargic attitude of the responsible officials.

The tenure of the TGTs is set to expire on August 14, shortly before the start of the next academic session, and a summary for the regularisation of their services was sent well ahead of time to the federal ministry of education last year through the federal directorate of education but the state of indecision prevailed even after a lapse of one year.

However, apprehending a collapse in the tutorial activity in the institutions, another summary for the extension to the service of TGTs was sent to the federal ministry of education but a decision on the summary is still awaited. With each passing day the teachers’ anxiety is increasing and they are facing uncertainty and unrest.

As many as 160 TGTs, majority of whom females, are working on contract basis since 2007 in grade 16. All of them are graduates with BEd and Masters degree holder with MEd, who were given an initial contract of two years with the assurance of regularisation of their services.

However, pending regularisation within the stipulated period, they were given another one-year extension on the expiry of the initial contract. As many as 14 out of 15 TGTs are females who are discharging their duties at federal government schools in the Lahore Region. It was expected they would be regularised in due course of time particularly when the government regularised services of teachers working on contract basis in grade 10 and grade 14 but the government remained silent on the case of grade 16 teachers.

The TGTs have threatened to go on strike to press their demands before the start of the next academic session from September this year. They have appealed to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to intervene.

They have also appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chau-dhry to take suo motto notice of the injustice done to them. The nation

Capt. Dr. Abdul Majid, Special Secretary, Public Health, Sindh, on the occasion said that, Health ASIA is the leading and only UFI (Paris) Approved, Regional Event on Health & Pharmaceutical Industry of Pakistan on the national calendar, which provides enormous opportunities of learning, Information sharing, mutual cooperation and combined ventures to all the stakeholders in the Asian Health sector. He said that although Pakistan’s Pharmaceutical and Health Care sectors are expanding and evolving rapidly, about half the population still has no access to awareness of general health Care & modern technology. This presents a challenge and an opportunity to the government. This conference and other such efforts on public/private level, therefore play a role to provide a platform where health Industry Professionals, Doctors, Health Insurers, and other stakeholders will exchange views, highlight problems & present ideas and strategies for future development of this sector.

The Chief Guest further added that, every part of the health care system must be involved with a strong commitment at providing a compassionate, ethical and accessible general and specialized care to the community with respect towards patients and their families.

On the occasion, Salman Burney, MD GlaxoSmithKline, said that Pakistan has a very vibrant and forward looking Pharma Industry. The National pharma industry has shown a progressive growth over the years, particularly over the last one decade. The industry has invested substantially to upgrade itself in the last few years and today the majority industry is following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), in accordance with the domestic as well as international Guidance. Currently the industry has the capacity to manufacture a variety of product ranging from simple pills to sophisticated Biotech, Oncology and Value Added Generic compounds.

Dr. Sarmad Maqbool, Abbott Laboratories Pakistan, Dr. Asima Zahid, Health Sciences, Institute of Business Management, Ali Haider, Asst. GM, Health Insurance, Adamjee Insurance Company Ltd., also highlighted the point that Health care is becoming the industry of the future as the world’s population lives longer. Until recently, investors focused on aging trends in developed economies, where life expectancies were generally higher and household incomes were sufficient to support health care spending.National public health is a recent innovation in Pakistan. Improvements in health care have been hampered by scarce resources and are difficult to coordinate nationally because health care remains a provincial responsibility rather than a central government one. Until the early 1980s, local governing bodies were in charge of health services.

The speakers stressed that the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Industry is a success story, providing high quality essential drugs at affordable prices to Millions. Technologically, strong and self reliant National Pharmaceutical Industry is not only playing a key role in promoting and sustaining development in the vital field of medicine within the country, but is also well set to take on the international markets. But in the given circumstances this industry needs strong support by the government and relieve on various fronts as that of manufacturing & exports.

The song spoke about the rigid education system
Karachi, July 05: We don’t need no education

We don’t need no thought control

No dark sarcasm in the classroom

Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!

When Roger Waters, bassist of the seminal English rock band Pink Floyd, wrote the band’s magnum opus, ‘Another Brick in the Wall’, the song became an anthem for the rebellious youth.

The song spoke about the rigid education system prevalent at the time, which did not allow students to think out of the box, nor did it grant them any leeway to explore and research independently. In short, the song argued for education to be a thought process, rather than merely rote learning.

However, one could never fathom that three decades later, a young position holder from Karachi would actually voice this sentiment in the presence of her teachers and peers at a ceremony which was held to honour her achievement.

Asma, daughter of Altaf, secured joint-second position in the Secondary School Certificate-part II (SSC) examination, which is more or less a stepping stone for students in their academic careers. To hear her declare that “education is not worth the effort” despite scoring 88.23 per cent was quite a shock for everybody present at the awards ceremony.

This disclosure makes one consider the reasons why a bright student like Asma would express apathy and pessimism towards education, which is often labelled as the key to success. Sadly, however, upon scratching the surface it is easy to see the reasons for such disillusionment expressed by Asma and so many other students towards education; the disrespect for merit, honesty and hard work.

Many students feel helpless when they see that despite spending hours upon hours studying and preparing for exams, some of their peers get more rewards as they take their exams in especially sanctioned, illegal examination centres with the connivance of board officials and others. It is disheartening to see the culture of rampant cheating prevail across examination centres and complete indifference shown by authorities to curb the menace. It is just as de-motivating to see same incompetent cheaters getting fake degrees, lucrative jobs and above all, landing the coveted title of Member of Parliament.

The media has been trying to raise the issue of corruption which is prevalent in the education boards across Karachi for two years now, but despite clear evidence against those responsible, cosmetic measures have been taken to eradicate the menace of cheating.

Merit is flouted left right and centre, with utter disregard for any sense of ethics or morality and accountability. The curriculum taught is completely obsolete and which only cultivates rote learning, instead of developing skills for logic and rationality. Questioning in class rooms is often suppressed and discouraged. Above all, as mentioned earlier, corruption is rewarded far more than honesty.

Only a few months ago, this newspaper reported about a school in Jamshed Town holding an illegal Sunday Bachat Bazar on its premises. Last month, a school in Gulberg Town was razed by the land mafia. Another school in Orangi Town is a den of drug peddlers and heroin addicts. All of this clearly points out the absolute incompetence of the authorities who are only keen on filling their coffers instead of performing their duties with diligence and sincerity.

Education in Pakistan is grappling with wide ranging such as curriculum design, rampant cheating, and negligible budget for development programs but above all, corruption remains the biggest hurdle.

When the chief minister of the country’s largest province states on record that a degree is a degree, whether fake or genuine, or when a member of the National Assembly is made to resign by courts for having a fake degree and yet he gets re-elected within two months, it only shows a complete lack of honesty and the kind of importance, or lack thereof, given to the education sector of this country. No wonder Asma chose to follow Roger Water’s advice, albeit for more reasons than one. The news

Islamabad: The degree of yet another member of the Punjab Assembly representing the PML-N has been declared fake. This time, the PML-N’s candidate is Rana Abdul Rauf who was elected from PP-279, Bahawalnagar. He had submitted a BA degree of Balochistan University. Meanwhile, the University of Punjab declared bogus the BA degree submitted by the PML-Q MPA, Shaukat Bhatti, who was elected MPA from Gujar Khan. The news
