KARACHI: Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has got his resignation ready and is expected to give it to President Asif Ali Zardari, Geo News reported Sunday.

President Asif Ali Zardari has called Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan to mull over the recent spate of target killings and the resultant situation in the city.

The sources said the Sindh Governor is expected to tender his resignation to the president Zardari in a do-or-die meeting.

The sources said the Dr Ishratul Ibad talked to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and apprised him about the party’s reservations over Karachi violence and a group in government involved in patronizing the criminal elements. Both the leaders discussed various issues in this regard.

The meetings of MQM’s Rabta Committee are simultaneously underway in London and Karachi to mull over the violent situation in Karachi, which has left at least 25 people in a matter of only 24 hours.

The Committee expressed reservations over the conduct of the government.

The MQM sources said the party has lifted over 20 bodies of its workers; accordingly, there is no other getting away from the tendering resignation.

The sources stressed the government in concert with the Awami National Party (ANP) is involved in exacerbating the situation in the city.

The MQM said the government is treating the party not like allies but rivals and the party workers are being targeted killed.

Stars at Abu Dhabi film festival to meet the public

A number of celebrities have confirmed their appearance at the Abu Dhabi film festival

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi film festival is set to be a star-studded event. Already, a number of celebrities have confirmed their appearance.

The American actress Julianne Moore and legendary French actor and director Gérard Depardieu will both be there. Depardieu stars in Potiche, which is screening at the festival, opposite Catherine Deneuve.

Moore will feature in Conversation With Julianne Moore, just one element of a new programme, called Encounters, which invites the public to interact with celebrities.

This event takes place on October 18, while Uma Thurman will partake in similar event on October 22, Yosra and Yehia El Fakharany on October 15, Lebleba on Oct 17 and Abbas Kiarostami on October 19.

The Making of Wrecked, with actor Adrian Brody and director Michael Greenspan, a conversation about the making of the film, will also take place on Saturday October 16th.

Encounters is free to the public on a first-come, first-served basis and tickets must be picked up at box offices for the various venues before the events.

Time to move away from conventional sources

wHEN British Prime

Minister Gordon Brown

wHEN British Prime Minister Gordon Brown recently emphasized the need for the West to end “the dictatorship of oil”, it was a clear indication, among other things, of the desperation in global markets in the face of what is an impending energy crisis for the world at large. That the members of the American Congress whom Mr Brown was addressing responded with rather enthusiastic clapping was a mere confirmation of that desperation. Issues of geopolitics aside, the fact remains that the developed world has for long understood the necessity to  diversify its energy profile. The fossil fuels are fast running out of stock and it is only logical to have a few alternatives in place before that phase lands   on the planet. From biofuels to ethanol mix and from windmills to photovoltaic solar panels, they are all being tried out across the developed world, with  some in the developing world also catching up at a reasonable pace. The  most advanced experiment in this regard came a few months ago when a private airline  et flew from London  to Amsterdam using jet fuel that was  mixed with coconut oil. There were detractors who called it  a publicity stunt for the commercial airliner, but nobody can deny that it was also a massive boost for the whole activity related to locating sources of  alternative energy.  Regardless of whether it was a genuine  scientific experiment, or a publicity stunt, the eco-flight did indicate  a major step forward in man’s search  for a feasible biofuel to cut down his dependence on fossil fuel on the one hand, while addressing the hazardous issue of global warming on the other. The eco-plane ran only one of its four engines on the experimental fuel which was a calculated concoction of oils derived from coconut and the babassu plants. The other three engines consumed the standard jet fuel. And even the biofuel-powered engine used an 80:20 blend of conventional and novel fuels. In simple terms, not more than five per cent of the plane’s entire fuel load  consisted of the novelty and that has given  ground for the critics to take out their daggers. There are miles and  miles and miles to go before one can  be sure of biofuel’s potential as an  aviation fuel.  Even if the technicality is taken  care of, it would still take more than a dozen acres of crop to fill one plane if it were to rely on coconut oil alone.  But, undeniably, the trial meant  much to activists around the world.  Their efforts include experimentation  with ethanol derived from palm, corn,  molasses and jatropha.  Besides, interest has also been  shown in farming algae which is likely  to throw up a few surprises in the time to come. Ethanol derived from molasses, however, has shown the biggest potential yet because of its potency and commercial viability. It is no wonder that the developed world is importing huge quantities of both ethanol and molasses from around the world to continue its march towards the now well-established E-10 and E-85 blends. And it is here that Pakistan comes into the picture,  being a leading exporter of the  two commodities. Pakistan is exporting over a million tons of molasses and three times as much of ethanol, which appears to be in contradiction with the demands of logic. While we are definitely earning a few bucks – around $6 million from molasses and $150 million from ethanol per year – but we are surely missing out on a great opportunity to work towards cutting down our own oil import bill by encouraging the use of ethanol blends in automobiles. With sugarcane being one of our main crops, the potential of molasses in our energy profile can be seen from the fact that last year the Faisalabad Electric Supply Corporation signed a power purchase agreement with a private sugar mill under which it would receive over 2500MW of molassesbased electricity per year. This, naturally, is surplus power for the mill concerned  which first meets its own energy  needs. If this is what one private initiative  can do, it is not difficult to work out  how radically things can change if it is  promoted on a national scale. But  strangely, people concerned are too happy to promote the export of molasses. It is not without reason that  people across the country have to put up with erratic power supply. With the kind of power crisis the  country is facing for the last couple of years, it is not illogical to expect the government to be working actively on finding both conventional and alternative means of forestalling a potential calamity. But the rather unsung death of a pilot project to try out E10 gasoline that has 10 per cent blending of ethanol is an indicator of things moving in the other direction. The project was launched a couple of years ago, but it soon met a fate  that is not a rarity in our context. Seen against that backdrop, the rising quantum of ethanol export, mostly to European destinations, carries negative significance and disquieting dimensions. The efficacy of ethanol-blended fuels around the globe is something that is no more an issue of debate anywhere; its acceptance is universal. As things stand today, ethanol  lends account for more than 35 per cent of all automotive fuels sold in the United States. Besides, the E10 blend has been approved for use by every major automobile manufacturer in  the developed world. The blend has also been found to be compatible with the existing service station infrastructure which means there is no additional cost on the maintenance front for the consumers. The world, in fact, is now moving ahead with the idea of using ethanol as a full-scale alternative fuel. The E85 blend – 85 per cent ethanol mixed with just 15 per cent of regular gasoline – is the first step in that direction. Currently, it can only be used in flexible fuel vehicles which number over  five million in the US alone and the manufacturers are known to have committed to increasing production to two million a year by the next year. With the world making major strides in that direction, it is surprising that Pakistan is content with exporting ethanol instead of making the most of this opportunity through value addition a d coordination between ethanol producers and oil marketing companies. The argument by certain lobbies that the price differential between regular gasoline and ethanol blends is not exotic enough to promote the product also needs to be seen in due perspective. For the consumers it may be a matter of a rupee or two per liter, but for the national economy it is a matter of billions in view of possible reduction in the annual oil import bill. A bigger question for those skeptical of the marketing viability of ethanol blends is: How does the West find it feasible despite importing ethanol from abroad, while we find it an economically deficient proposition even when we have it in abundance at home? The issue certainly deserves a serious rethink. If an effort is made, there is luckily no technology deficit that may make us stutter on the path. By reviving the project and keeping a close eye on its progress, Pakistan can also hope to join the global bandwagon. The success of the British eco-flight was described as th  “equivalent of those exciting first few steps of a baby”. In our own context, revival of the E-10 project may have the same connotation. Having said that, ethanol blend is merely one of the many options that we have available to us. As per official announcements, the country has coal reserves that can produce energy equivalent to more than 400 billion barrels of oil or over 850 trillion cubic feet of gas. But, unfortunately, the coal has stayed where it was while we have been making ourselves happy with statistics. The coal reserves of Thar have  often been cited in recent months by all and sundry as a possible way out of our energy crisis. There are some issues of technicality, however, that deserve a clear policy direction. Before putting the Thar coal project on the fast track for increased power generation, it would make greater sense if, for instance, the Jamshoro plant based on Lakhra coal efficiently used. At present, it is working
at
around 25 per cent of its capacity. Wapda finds it mush less cost-e fective than its earlier estimates and the private sector is only interested in getting involved if it has a guaranteed buyer of the power it would subsequently produce. Coal extricated from Lakhra mines – as well as that from Sonda mines near Thatta – is mostly sold off to various industries rather than used for power generation. If the government could first enhance power generation at Jamshoro to its optimum capacity,  it will solve not just the crisis in practical terms, but will also settle many a nerve in Sindh. A look at the country’s existing energy profile is enough to suggest a move in that direction. The UAE University in Abu Dhabi has built the world’s first fully automated Arabic-speaking robot that can have intelligent conversations with humans – based on information gathered via the internet and through social networking sites.

However, making the leap from lab project to commercial application remains difficult – largely because of funding.

In Dubai, a series of networking events have been launched in an effort to bring together investors and entrepreneurs.

Ben Thompson went along to see if the meetings can spark a wave of innovation for the region.

Say salam wa aleikum to an Arabic-speaking android developed at United Arab Emirates University and billed as the first of its kind in the world. It could enter mass production to help people at shopping malls.

The Ibn Sina robot, named after an 11th century philosopher, can recognize faces, converse with people by speaking in classical Arabic, connect to the Internet, and retrieve information. As seen in the video below, it can also exchange kisses with people.

Software for Ibn Sina was developed by a team led by computer science assistant professor Nikolaos Mavridis, with the mechanics by Hanson Robotics. Mavridis says some companies have approached his lab and asked about using the turban-wearing, bearded bot in shopping malls or as a receptionist.

Doubtless Ibn Sina, known as Avicenna in English, would have been pleased.

Dubai: Ibn Sina, the Arabic-speaking humanoid robot, recently thrilled passengers as he flew Emirates flight EK817 from Dubai to Riyadh.

A first for Emirates, Ibn Sina, one of the world’s most advanced robots, travelled as a First Class passenger on the flight accompanied by Dr Nikolaos Mavridis, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the UAE University College of Information Technology in Al Ain where the machine was developed, along with two of his assistants.

Able to verbally interact with people, Ibn Sina stunned fellow passengers as he was checked in at Emirates’ dedicated First Class check-in counter and relaxed in Emirates’ First Class lounge prior to boarding his flight.

The transportation of Ibn Sina required countless hours of planning and input from multiple Emirates Group departments to ensure the humanoid was cleared for travel by the Dubai Police, the Dubai International Airport and Emirates’ safety team.

Mohammad Mattar, Divisional Senior Vice-President, Airport Operations, said: “The planning and integration of numerous Emirates departments is testament to our commitment to give every passenger, human or not, the best level of care and service possible. Ibn Sina embodies the forward thinking and innovative ethos of Emirates and we were honoured to have him fly with us.

How it all started

It all began in 1967 in a tatty two-room office in central Stockholm. We brothers and our then partner, Bengt Hellsten, sat and talked one day about our dream. We wanted to give people the opportunity to benefit from good skin care and attractive cosmetics, and we wanted our products to be inspired by the natural beauty that the world associates with Sweden.

Our concept was by no means an obvious contender for success. Not in the 1960s and especially not in Sweden, where the anti-Vietnam War movement, the greens and the student activists were at their height. “Care” was an important word at that time, but it was not particularly associated with one’s own body and wellbeing.

The office was plain and uninspiring. In the middle there was a rickety ping-pong table on which we packed our products for delivery to our sales consultants. They were an important part of our business concept. Rather than investing in a chain of shops, which would have taken time and been very costly, we decided to move our retail operations into the homes of Swedish consumers. We had sales consultants all over the country, and each and every one of them had the heart and ambition of an entrepreneur. They wanted to be part of a revolutionary new business and earn money from natural skin care. The products were distributed to their homes, and from day one they had a network of potential customers in their friends, colleagues and neighbours.

That, in a nutshell, was our concept. It is 40 years since we first formulated it and it remains unchanged to this day, with one big difference – our entrepreneurs are now found all over the world, from Moscow to Jakarta, Krakow to Lima.

And that, we believe, is where the secret of our success lies. Oriflame has remained true to its original concept of natural Swedish cosmetics and an entrepreneurial culture.

Being part of that revolution in cosmetics has been immensely rewarding to the af Jochnick family. Not merely in terms of financial compensation, but in the belief we have placed in our people and the belief they have held in us.

The people behind Oriflame are the reason for much of the company’s success. But how does one run a company with more than two million entrepreneurs all over the world who speak different languages and hold different values, religious beliefs and political convictions?

The secret here is – culture. A common culture is an invisible bond. It has the power to unite, enthuse and lead people over borders and boundaries that might otherwise separate them. The Oriflame culture gives each person the freedom to set their own targets, income and working hours. It is a culture that is based on respect for and belief in others. We have given millions of people the opportunity to change their lives for the better – an opportunity that many have taken to achieve their dreams. We have given people in Russia, Europe, Asia, South America and Africa the opportunity to start their own business, often in countries where the freedom to do business was discouraged or restricted to a self-appointed elite. In this way, Oriflame has helped tear down walls. We built the first cosmetics factory in Warsaw after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

We have come a long way from that tatty two-room office in Stockholm. We have no plans to change the formula of our success. On the contrary, current trends confirm that our 40-yearold business concept is even more appropriate now than it was then. We are active in those parts of the world with the fastest growth rates, and we are active in the market segment with the greatest growth of all – direct sales.

It is with a mixture of satisfaction and caution that we look forward to the years ahead. The goal is clear – Oriflame’s target is to become the world’s leading direct sales cosmetics company. That journey has begun!
