TAXILA, Feb 12: Better projection and showcasing of Gandhara civilisation sites may prove an encouraging factor to attract scholars and religious tourists from all over the world here.

Pakistan has a multi-faceted rich heritage, divergent cultures and is honoured to be the birth place of ancient civilisations, which it should strive to share with the world.

This was stated by Asean’s Islamabad Committee members during their day-long visit to archaeological museum in Taxila and ancient sites.

The committee members comprised High Commissioner of Brunei Pehin Colonel (retired) Dato Abdul Jalil Ahmad; Ishaq Latuconsina, Ambassador of Indonesia; San Myint, Ambassador of Myanmar; Jesus I. Yabes Ambassador of Philippines and Dato Ahmad Anwar Adnan, high commissioner of Malaysia besides their family members and embassy staff.

They said Pakistan was blessed with cultural richness and a better showcasing of the rich cultural, historical and archeological heritage sites would fetch more tourists to this valley especially for observing religious festivals at the Buddhist site here.

Ambassador of Philippines Jesus I. Yabes, while talking to Dawn, appreciated the efforts of Pakistan for preserving Buddhist places of religious worship.

He said he was very much impressed after seeing this ancient site as Taxila used to be a seat of learning and capital of the Gandhara civilisation.

“There is no security problem for foreign tourists especially religious tourists in Buddhist sites and by offering cultural and religious activities at these places Pakistan can fetch a large number of tourists from Buddhist countries”.

He said majority of Buddhist people lived in Asian countries but they had not known about the rich sites of Pakistan and its treasure as no information, pamphlets and books in their respective languages were made available to them.

Speaking on the occasion, Indonesian ambassador Ishaq Latuconsina said the Pakistani government was also taking pragmatic steps for preserving Buddhist heritage in the country.

He lauded the efforts of local archeologists for better preservation and restoration of centuries-old relics. He urged the government to build a soft image of the country among communities of the world and to promote and publicise its cultural, historical, archeological and religious potential.

The Pakistani government should go an extra mile to fetch international tourists especially from Buddhist countries home. He said a large Buddhist population lives in Indonesia and with delegates’ exchange they would have better understanding of the rich heritage.

High Commissioner of Brunei Pehin Colonel (retired) Dato Abdul Jalil Ahmad remarked that revolutionary steps both by the Pakistani government and private sector are need of the hour in this regard.

Earlier, on their arrival, officials of archeology department received the diplomats from Asean countries.

Briefing them, Curator Taxila Museum Nasir Khan said there were 4,000 objects displayed, including stone, stucco, terracotta, silver, gold, iron and semiprecious stones. He claimed that Gandhara sculptures were a prime attraction.

He said: “Gandhara sculptures influenced the art of not only India but every part of the Buddhist world — Tibet, Ceylon, Burma, Siam, Java as well as Central Asia, China, Korea and Japan and produced Asia’s greatest artistic success i.e. Buddha-image.”

Sir” Kindly look in to the CV of Vice Chancellor real brother in (Attached File), who was appointed in BPS-19 in 2010 & Now the sitting Vice Chancellor Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan going to appoint him as Associate Professor in BPS-20 on regular basis in the last month of his tenure as Vice Chancellor. These Appointments of real brother in Department of Economics & his wife in BPS-18 and dozens of other relatives in different departments are extremely awful and disappointing because HEC authorities related with quality assurance/ academics and research development kept complete silence since long regarding the regular as well as TTS recruitments & promotions, particularly in university of Agriculture, Faisalabad. We have been repeatedly informing to your kind honor to ensure the merit based selection without any discrimination in the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, but regrettably the selection on TTS since 2008 to date emphatically based on favoritism/discrimination/despotism in the said institute. I am afraid one may conclude that either the watchdog has involvement with the concerned authorities or it has no capabilities to ensure merit based selection. In either case, HEC & Punjab Govt loosing ground for transparency, lucidity, fluency & its endurance.

Your kind authority is requested to help the faculty members of the University of Agriculture, in initiating a serious action/ inquire against Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan through higher Government officials of Punjab & HEC (Higher Education Commission)

Yours faith fully

The Nemours Foundation offers these suggestions:

* Keep a consistent bedtime and waking schedule.

* Implement a calm, quiet, relaxing and consistent bedtime routine — perhaps including a bath, book and some cuddle time.

* Make sure your child’s bed is comfortable and cosy. Allow a favourite stuffed animal or blanket in bed.

* Don’t let your child watch any frightening television shows before bed.

* Explain to your child that nightmares are only dreams, and that he or she can’t be hurt during a nightmare.

ISLAMABAD: “Pink Ribbon Youth Year 2012” campaign will reach as many as 500,000 youth, in 500 colleges, raising awareness regarding prevention of breast cancer, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) said on Monday.
Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Pakistan Postal Service, National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP) and Higher Education Commission will support the campaign. Pink Ribbon Campaign (PRC) National Coordinator Omer Aftab, briefing about the campaign, said, “Starting from the federal capital, we will reach out to 25,000 students for breast cancer awareness.” PRC has been working for the last 15 years across the world, while it started work in Pakistan in 2004.
“Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer, causing 40,000 deaths per year. Approximately one in every nine of Pakistani women suffers from breast cancer at some point in her life, whereas with early diagnosis, a patient’s chance of surviving breast cancer is higher than 90 percent,” he said.
Omer said that around 90,000 cases were diagnosed every year, which is a recorded figure, however, some of them are not highlighted at any stage, especially in the rural areas of the country. Talking about inherent challenges, he said there were cultural beliefs and taboos regarding this disease, besides poor access to health care and lack of medical facilities and infrastructure. He said this campaign is public-private partnership, focusing on improving health of women, adding that it was very unfortunate that one doctor was available for 1254 patients, one nurse for 2671 patients and one midwife for 6235 patients. PAEC has 14 cancers hospitals in the country and is raising awareness about the pink ribbon campaign. Women Development Department Punjab, First Women Bank Sindh and NHA are extending cooperation for the campaign. PRC is spreading awareness through information material nationwide. It also educates girls and women by arranging various events and activities that create a direct interaction. Addressing the ceremony, HEC Chairman Javed Leghari said that over one and a half million students were registered with the commission through affiliated colleges at districts and tehsil level, and the commission would raise awareness about the prevention of this deadly disease. He assured full support to the PRC for promoting awareness about breast cancer, which was alarmingly increasing in the young girls across the country.
A memorandum of understanding has already been signed in this regard, besides setting up a task force headed by the Fatima Jinnah Women University vice chancellor.
Pakistan Post Director General Fazal Sattar on the occasion said the postal service had issued a commemorative stamp, with the message “Join hands to combat breast cancer”, which would be highlighted throughout the world.
NH&MP Additional Inspector General Farooq Azam said that breast cancer was curable and early diagnosis of this disease could save the lives of patients.
“Although it is not the mandate of the police service, we are involved in various activities like polio-immunisation and breast cancer awareness campaigns, as we have access to over 100,000 commuters, travelling through national highways,” he said, adding that “around 50,000 children were administered polio drops by the police service and it will also disseminate awareness regarding prevention of this disease. dailytimes

The prevalence of HIV in Pakistan has, since 2008, increased from 20.8% to 36.7% among Injecting Drug Users (IDUs), from 6.4% to 7.3% among ‘hijra’ sex workers, from among 0.9% to 3.1% among male sex workers, and from 0.2% to 0.8% among female sex workers, according to national HIV surveillance results disseminated here on Monday. As such, an alarming increase is evident in HIV rates among key populations at higher risk of infection.

A set of three studies is the key output of a second generation surveillance system for HIV that had been developed in Pakistan in 2003. The studies have been carried out through a partnership between the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), the Provincial AIDS Control Programmes (PACPs) and the Canada-Pakistan HIV/AIDS Surveillance Project (HASP), and has been enabled through bilateral cooperation between the governments of Pakistan and Canada, including significant funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

The surveillance effort, which is the largest of its kind in the history of Pakistan, employed a second generation surveillance approach, meaning that aside from HIV status, the behaviour patterns that increase the risk of infection were also researched.

According to the studies, HIV prevalence among female sex workers has registered a four-fold increase (from 0.2% to 0.8%) since 2007, and that among male sex workers has increased by a factor of three (from 0.9% to 3.1%). With respect to rise in HIV prevalence among IDUs, it informs that where available, needle exchange programmes for the prevention of HIV had improved HIV prevention behaviours and reduced HIV among those who inject drugs.

The first study presented was Round 4 of national HIV surveillance. It has documented more sex workers of all types and has found them to be operating in more locations. Newer mechanisms for sex work have also been found, with cell phone usage topping the list.

The second study, also national and consisting of only testing for HIV infection among pregnant women representing the general population, found that HIV prevalence remains very low, at less than 0.1%. Corroborating this, no HIV was found in the third study that was conducted among mine workers in Balochistan, although these workers have high rates of risk behaviors. Together, these studies signify that Pakistan continues to experience HIV spread characterized as ‘concentrated’ among key populations.

Addressing the dissemination meeting, Dr. Faran Emmanuel, senior technical advisor of HASP, pointed out the need for better targeted and stronger programmes for reducing sexual transmission of HIV. He also underscored the need to intensify harm reduction services such as needle exchange programmes.

The Head of Aid, CIDA, Rhonda Gossen-Ehsani, noted that Pakistan now has strong and useful information about HIV and recommended HASP and NASP to develop an internationally recognized model for HIV surveillance. She asserted that the project’s second generation surveillance processes and results need to be carefully made sustainable by incorporating them into all HIV/AIDS programmes in Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by representatives from NACP, the four PACPs, research institutions, non-government organizations, the UN system, donors and media. Earlier, the country director of HASP Dr. Simon Azariah welcomed the participants while the acting programme manager of NACP Dr. Amir Maqbool thanked CIDA and HASP for their efforts.

Dr. M. Naeem Taj, a talented general and laparoscopic surgeon currently heading the Department of Surgery at Islamabad’s Capital Hospital, has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records by successfully removing the world’s longest gall bladder through a 1 centimetre umbilical incision.

The success of the Pakistani surgeon was celebrated at a ceremony organised by the Capital Hospital here on Monday, with Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Farkhand Iqbal as the chief guest. The ceremony was attended by CDA officials, regional director of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and doctors and paramedical staff of the hospital.

The Guinness Book of World Records has acknowledged and registered Dr. Naeem Taj’s name and has issued a certificate which was awarded to him by the CDA chairman. Dr. Naeem Taj performed the laparoscopic cholecystectomy of Rasheeda Bibi on June 14, 2011. The surgery was unique in the respect that the world’s longest gall bladder (measuring 25.5 cms) was removed through a 1cm umbilical incision.

Addressing the gathering, Farkhand Iqbal said it was a moment of pride and honour, not only for CDA, but for the entire nation. He pledged all-out support to improve the quality of healthcare services being extended by the Capital Hospital.

The executive director of Capital Hospital, Dr. Siddique Akbar Satti, said, he was proud of Dr. Naeem Taj and expected a lot more from the talented surgeon. Sharing his views, Dr. Naeem Taj dedicated the award to the nation. He expressed confidence that greater heights can be scaled if the right kind of opportunities, resources and encouragement are given to doctors.

Lack of awareness and utter negligence about the issues concerning reproductive health at the critical stage of girls and boys attaining the stage of puberty when their bodies are undergoing major changes, lead to serious physical, emotional and psychological disorders, which eventually lead to gender-based and domestic violence later in life.

This may sound somewhat astonishing, but medical research has abundantly pointed towards physical, particularly sexual disorders, both in female and male, which caused emotional problems when they start matrimonial relations.

It was observed in the needs assessment that the Member Associations of IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation) have a unique set of issues prevailing in the countries, which are geo-strategically located in the centre of an international conflict zone like Pakistan. The conflict has had political, economic, religious and social repercussions. This has been combined with a lack of political stability and the failure of successive governments to institute progressive and sustainable policies. In terms of development this has meant a lack of growth with many indicators either stagnant or showing a regressive trend. Specifically in the context of sexual and reproductive health services, the space for meaningful action has been reduced considerably. The need consequently has increased in the same proportion. The challenge therefore lies in meeting this need within the constrained space available. The current demographic trend in Pakistan points to a ‘youth bulge’ as approximately 40 per cent of the population is made up of young people below the age of 15 years (PDHS 2006-07). It is imperative that provisions are made to cater to their needs. Without any information, education or preparation they will face multiple physical, mental and emotional problems on reaching adulthood. The existing laws and policies as well as cultural practices make young girls especially vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

The frustration caused by the sexual disorders developed as earlier said because of negligence or lack of awareness at the age of attaining puberty cause serious complexities, which sour the relations and lead to domestic and gender based violence.

Medical Research has indicated towards the reproductive health disorders as a major source because the young girls and boys are usually shy of discussing their physical changes openly with their parents or with the medical experts, be that a qualified doctor or concerned professionals engaged with reproductive health procedures.

Unfortunately the term of reproductive health is generally taken in a narrow and very restricted manner, confined to sexuality alone. Whereas, it is an all encompassing term which covers biological, physical, mental and social well being of any individual.

Medical research has also indicated that the problems in their reproductive health system developed in early in their lives, could easily be resolved and the future complications could be averted if taken up at the right time, something which will considerably scale down the gender based and domestic violence in the society.

It has been observed that only because of lack of awareness, shyness to discuss these problems with their parents the young girls and boys develop complications which can cause infertility, breast cancer, sexually transmitted infection (STI), the RTI, cervical cancer, hepatitis A and B and more! Consequently lack of awareness, social inadaptability and general shyness to discuss these issues openly result in the minor complications growing into major reproductive health problems. And, at the matrimonial stage the incapability on part of one or both the partners generate discontentment, which turns to doubts, denial, unacceptability, and eventually to anger and frustration, initially leading to sour matrimonial relations with element of violence gradually getting infused in it.

Physical and mental abuse of girls and women is mostly related to the reproductive health problems. A girl not conceiving after a few months of marriage usually becomes a big source of concern for not only her husband and her in-laws and other relatives, but also for her own parents.

The incidents of physical abuse like threatening to divorce, beating, sexual accesses, and even burning, acid throwing and other such crimes, particularly against young girls and women are too frequent in the society. Most of such cases go unreported, but even the number of the ones reported in the media or in which the victims manage to reach the police for relief are alarmingly big in numbers.

These incidents could be brought down by simply creating awareness in the society at all levels, particularly among the parents and the teachers in the high schools and colleges because the young girls and boys could overcome their shyness to discuss these issues with their parents and teachers if they are approached in the right way.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found predominantly in oily fish. Because these nutrients are thought to play a role in brain function, many researchers have wondered whether a high consumption could lower the risk of depression. But earlier studies on this topic among adults have yielded inconclusive results, Health News reported.
To examine the association between consumption of fish, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and depression among teenagers, researchers analysed the diet and rates of depression in 3,067 boys and 3,450 girls from Japan. The participants were high school students aged between 12 and 15 years.
Overall, 23 percent of the boys and 31 percent of the girls suffered from symptoms of depression, including feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness and sleep disturbances.
Based on questionnaires of food intake, and adjusting for factors including age and parents’ education level, it was found that boys who ate the most fish the top fifth based on total consumption had a 27 percent lower odds of being depressed compared to those ranked in the bottom fifth.
Similar differences were seen when looking specifically at the EPA and DHA content of the fish consumed. Meanwhile, no effect of eating fish on depression was seen among the girls.
The researchers cautioned that their findings do not provide enough evidence to determine if eating fish actually lowers the risk of depression. It is also possible that those who are depressed eat less fish.
Although more research is needed to confirm a cause-and-effect link, the study indicates that boosting the intake of fish may in preventing depression. pakistantoday

Inadequate quantity and quality of potable water and poor sanitation facilities are associated with a host of illnesses and an estimated 250,000 child deaths occur each year in Pakistan due to water-borne diseases.

Unsafe drinking water is a source of many diseases, including diarrhoea, typhoid, intestinal worms and hepatitis.

It is estimated that more than 1.6 million DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) are lost annually as a result of death and ailment due to diarrhoea and almost 90,000 as a result of typhoid.

Talking to this news agency, Chairman Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) Dr. Aslam Tahir said diarrheal and typhoid mortality in children accounts for the bulk of losses, reflecting the vulnerability of children to these diseases.

He said the total health costs are estimated at Rs114 billion, or approximately 1.81% of GDP.

The high proportions of costs due to premature child deaths, followed by the

mortality impacts of typhoid in the older population are striking.

It has been reported that an estimated 62% of Pakistan urban and 84% of rural population do not treat their water and resultantly 100 million cases of diarrhoeal diseases are registered in hospitals and 40% deaths are caused by polluted water.

A study conducted by Unicef found that 20-40% of the hospital beds in Pakistan are occupied by patients suffering from water-related diseases, such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery and hepatitis, which are responsible for one-third of all deaths.

The PCRWR chairman said fundamental reason behind poor water quality and sanitation are a major public concern, because the resulting water-borne diseases are responsible for substantial human and economic losses. These include loss of million of working hours of productivity annually, and associated costs for healthcare.

Dr. Aslam Tahir said reduction in the occurrence of water-borne diseases will certainly go a long way in the efforts to alleviate poverty.

In rural areas especially, women will be primary beneficiaries of improved water supply and sanitation through health, productivity and safety related impacts.

He said hence sanitation, water quality and quantity and public awareness and education are of prime importance to Pakistan in implementing its poverty reduction strategy and especially for those affected by floods. the news

According to BBC, elderly people with high blood levels of vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids had less brain shrinkage and better mental performance, a neurology study found. Trans fats found in fast foods were linked to lower scores in tests and more shrinkage typical of Alzheimer’s.
The best advice is to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, not smoke, take regular exercise and keep blood pressure and cholesterol in check, said Alzheimer’s Research UK. Researchers stated that there is a clear need for conclusive evidence about the effect of diet on our risk of Alzheimer’s, which can only come from large-scale, long-term studies. The research looked at nutrients in blood, rather than relying on questionnaires to assess a person’s diet. Trans fats are common in processed foods, including cakes, biscuits and fried foods.
Study author Gene Bowman of Oregon Health and Science University said: “These results need to be confirmed, but obviously it is very exciting to think that people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet.” pakistantoday

Children often perpetuate a behaviour when it’s rewarded, and stop a behaviour when it’s ignored, the American Academy of Family Physicians says.

So what can parents do to encourage good behaviour? The academy offers these suggestions:

* it clear that bad behaviour is not acceptable.

* clear in explaining the rules and your expectations, and how the child can be rewarded.

* of punishing a child for not following the rules, do not give the child any reward.

* may be determined by setting a timer for completion of a task, or by giving children a “star” each time they practice good behaviour. After a predetermined number of stars is reached, give the child a reward.
