“N1 is working on two music albums simultaneously. ‘Inqilaab’ was our debut release from our first album on revolution. ‘Jalwa’ is our debut release from our second album that focuses on commercial music. The song has an almost dreamy feel to it and we hope it will do very well on the charts,” said Naimul Abd, the man behind N1.

LAHORE: Famous film star Shabnam came face to face with a group of youngsters here on Tuesday, promising her expectant admirers that she will provide them with a real tour of her life and career through an autobiography she plans to write.

She was given a warm welcome upon her arrival at the FC College with her composer husband, Robin Ghosh. This set the tone for a frank interaction between the two artistes and the students and faculty of the college.

Moved by the enthusiasm and the inquisitiveness of her audience, Shabnam was at her most relaxed and introduced the youngsters to a trait that has become rare in artistes with time: she was her usual humble self, more inclined to greet the questions with a smile than proudly flaunting her star status.

The Shabnam-Ghosh pair may not have been strangers to most in the jam-packed auditorium. They have a permanent place in the annals of Pakistani cinema and household names here. Given their status, it was no surprise that one question they were repeatedly asked was: “Why has the Pakistan film industry gone to the dogs?”

“I am not responsible,” came the answer from the smiling lady guest dressed in green and gold. “I left the industry in 1999 and don’t know what happened afterwards.” She did, however, underscore the importance of government support if the “lifeless” industry was to be resurrected. “Director, producer, musician, writer, actors… they all combine to make a good film. You need to gather the team,” she said.

Exactly, then what forced one team member to leave Pakistan in 1999? “I left Pakistan for the simple reason that I wanted to spend time with my family in Bangladesh,” Shabnam said and spoke about the bright prospects of a co-production involving talent from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

But it wasn’t just an instance where the young had got nostalgic about how rosy it once had been. Far from it. The young crowd did ask Shabnam about her on-screen chemistry with Nadeem, just as they asked her the secret behind her flowing black hair.

“This runs in the family. Besides, coconut oil helps,” the star replied with her trademark smile. And she did display her powers
to hold captive and enthrall the gallery with a standard yet unique sounding “Lahore, Lahore aye” at one point during the interaction.

The play is an Urdu version of Shakespeare’s play ‘Taming of the Shrew’,and was staged to a packed audience. It was a young crowd of students, who were very supportive and energetic throughout the performance.

‘Taming of the Shrew’ was initially designed for the Globe Theatre, London, but was edited specially for the Alhamra performance. The lead actress for the play was sick, hence, a substitute actress filled in for her.

The play told the story of two sisters; Kiran – the loud and irritating one whom nobody wants to marry, and Beena – the pretty and decent one. The father decided that her younger daughter will not get married until the elder sister does, which led to a chaos among Beena’s suitors. Eventually, all the guys came together and plotted a scheme to get Kiran married. After Kiran’s successful marriage, hell breaks loose among the men for Beena’s hand in marriage.

On the whole, the play was highly appreciated by the audience that lauded the briiliant acting of the performers.

LAHORE, April 17: The much hyped event — the four-day fashion gala (April 13-16) by the Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) — concluded late on Monday at Expo Centre, Johar Town.

The week that unfolded on April 13 witnessed some chic and fiery catwalks by the bold and beautiful regiment of models on the ramp showcasing some of the trendiest designer wear on the fashion scene.

The week also featured some of the exclusive collections of country’s top designers, including HSY and The House of Kamiar Rokni, in well choreographed fashion shows. The week marked the fifth consecutive PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, the third year of prêt a porter fashion.

The week showcased 24 luxury and prêt a porter designer collections in four days at one main runway venue and to increase interaction between fashion and textile a number of voile shows were also held.

To complement the fashion gala, the PFDC also put on display exhibition stalls at the venue with each designers’ and textile houses’ portfolio, production capabilities and design sensibilities clearly exhibited.

On the concluding night of the week, the Act 1 featured three designers. The first collection put on the ramp was a joint womens’s wear collection by designers Sadaf Malaterre and Anjum Alix Noon, titled ‘The Blackbird One’. The collection was a fine blend of silks, art and structured cuts. The collaboration brought forward a unique synergy between art, fabric and design as epitomized by designer Sadaf Malaterre and artist Anjum Butt. The design philosophy focuses on a continuous tribute to the celebration of life and aimed to put forward something new and innovative. The collection reflected the respect the two artists had for each other’s work and played on earthy colours and variation of cuts.

The second on the runway was Sania Maskatiya’s Prêt-à-Porter women’s wear spring/summer collection entitled ‘Uraan’. Using digital and screen prints, exclusive embroidered fabric in an array of hues and light and airy fabrics such as chiffon, cotton net with rich and luxurious chamose silks the designer endeavored to capture the essence of summer dreams and desires. Using a summery palette with hints of colours ranging from turquoise, lime, off white, gold, beige and firozi, the collection reflected designer’s fashion aesthetic of creating fusion garments.

The third designer going by the order of the night was Zara Shahjahan. Shahjahan’s women’s wear prêt-à-porter collection titled ‘Pretty Please’ conveys ‘simply look and feel pretty’. The collection consisted of high fashion outfits, specifically designed for the Pakistani consumer looking for wearable high fashion. Her silhouettes for ‘Pretty Please’ included kurtas and tunics, stylized in different ways. With emphasis on flowery prints and delicate embroideries, the collection had summer fabrics like pure cottons and lawn.

The inaugural collection of Act 2 was by The House of Kamiar Rokni. Rokni presented its latest women’s wear ‘Sweetest Taboo’. The collection continued the brand’s exploration of minimalist chic cuts that required no embellishment to create all season pieces that work well for the city as well as on a holiday. The collection drew inspiration from Kamiar Rokni and Tia Noon’s memories of the 1980?s as it celebrates their love for print, colour and pattern. Some of the key looks being showcased on the ramp were palazzo pants, 80’s style bat-wing sleeved tunics, blazers and bolero jackets layered over tops and sleek harem pants. For this collection, The House of Kamiar Rokni collaborated with accessories designer Farhat Ahmad who created hand bags, belts and shoes using the design house’s collection prints while adding a dash of suede for a touch of luxury.

The collection was also introduced with a video, which had been produced, directed and stylized by Maram & Aabroo with Noorey Bhatti as the model.

The latest menswear luxury/pret2012 collection was by Republic being showcased entitled ‘Tears for Fears’. The majority of the audience was overjoyed to see the collection which drew inspiration from the World War 2 and the post war era. ‘Tears for Fears’, however, is based on metropolitan street wear of the time, with lots of layering. The collection is vintage and chic and parts are inspired by the industrial and working middle/upper class the hipsters of that era.

Hasan Sheheryar Yasin’s Pret Deluxe 2012 collection drew inspiration from the luxury resort lifestyle of the Mediterranean. Soft fluid fabrics such as georgettes, chiffons, grip and linens and had been used with a strong emphasis on lace. The silhouette was layered with crisp tailored pieces along with volumesque ones featuring modern cuts while showing a variation of length. The embellishments aimed to create surface texture utilizing embroideries, old and new.

As part of its special programmes, the Asian Study Group (ASG) organised an evening of music titled ‘Folk Music of the Punjab’ featuring Javed Niazi, son of the legendary vocalist, Tufail Niazi, who entertained aficionados of Punjabi folk music for many years. The event was held at the Serena Hotel, courtesy the management.

After the arrival of members and their guests, the artistes were introduced by ASG President Parvin Malik, who apologised for the delay in starting the programme due to the non-arrival of some members stuck in traffic in the aftermath of VIP movement.

Javed Niazi sang mystic and love songs in the style he has adopted from his father, albeit with a touch of his own. He repertoire for the evening included the ‘kafis’ (mystic poems) of Shah Hussain (1539-1594), Baba Bullhe Shah (1680-1751) and Khawaja Ghulam Farid (1845-1901) and a few other popular numbers such as ‘mein naeen jaana khairian de nal’ and the famous ‘thumri’ in ‘raag Khamach,’ ‘mein tau charan pakar ke jhuk raee aan.’ Islamabad’s very own accomplished flute player Salman Aadil and renowned ‘tabla’ player, Muhammad Ajmal added to the pleasure of the performance as accompanists. Salman’s solo highlights were warmly applauded whenever the sweet notes of his flute filled the hall, but Ajmal’s ‘tabla’ sound was not properly controlled by the technician and was sometimes too loud – which was a pity as he has an eclectic style and can accompany any musician with aplomb. Much appreciation was voiced during and after the programme — wih some people enjoying it more than others and expressing their delight vocally during the performance with ‘wah’ and ‘bauhat khhob’ — difficult to translate but generally meaning ‘very well sung!’ It was a pleased bunch of persons who left after thanking the musicians and the organisers, especially Yasser Noman the music specialist.

Javed Niazi has now become established singer in his own right. Born in a family of folk musicians he learnt the art of singing from his father, the legendary Tufail Niazi. Like his father he can sing in many forms but specialises in the various folk genres peculiar to the Punjab. Tufail Niazi had very solid foundation in classical music and as he ventured forth in the folk forms he brought along with him the virtuosity that is the hallmark of a classical vocalist. He placed folk singing on a totally different and higher level and added another dimension to the vocal music of the Punjab. Javed Niazi has built on the solid foundation that his father laid. He sings the forms of vocal music like the geet, kafi, mahiya and boliaan with effortlessly. He has performed across the country and toured India, Australia, Norway, North Korea, Singapore, United States the Middle East and Malaysia.

LAHORE: The four-day (April 13-16) grand Sunsilk fashion week by the Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) opened at the Expo Centre in Johar Town on Friday

This April marks the fifth consecutive PFDC fashion week, the third year of prêt & porter fashion.

The first day was structured into two acts: three ramp shows (each consisting of six designers), and a trends show put together from the works of participating designers.

The Act 1 of week began with the sister duo Nickie Nina’s latest prêt a porter collection ‘Royal Military’. Though Nickie-Nina are better known for their sleek silhouettes and flowing clothes, this collection was a complete diversion from their well-known design sensibility.

The collection encompassed the strength and regal appeal of the military: the cuts and silhouette were inspired by the expert and almost rigid tailoring of military uniforms, as well as the sophistication and elegance of the armed forces. The silhouette was therefore more structured the lines more straight and rigid and the embellishments even more detailed than before. The colour palette was diverse and taken from traditional military shades along with an assortment of military insignia, medals and badges.

Next on the runway was Karachi-based designer Tazeen Hasan with her prêt a porter women’s wear collection ‘Evocative’. The collection is based in chiffons and the cuts are soft and feminine. The embellishments include frilling, interspersed with an extensive use of sequins, bugle beads and floral ornamentation.

Act 1’s second show belonged to the AZZA’s spring/summer 2013 women’s wear collection ‘Inheritance”’ an ode to the creative director, Azeeza Desai Khan’s Indian and Afghani roots. The designer used artisanal textile craft of South Asia through rich embellishments, hand embroideries and silks fused with Western modernized cuts. The collection leveraged dimensional South Asian textiles including pure silks, chiffon, net and organza alongside antiqued gold and silk thread finished embroideries.

Opening for Day 1’s Act 2 was Élan’s collection titled ‘Flights of Fantasy’.

The designer, Khadijah Shah, took her design inspiration from fascination with Chinese designs resulting in her compilation of Oriental imagery put together over the course of several years. The colour palette ranged from popping yellow, pink, lime and electric blue along with neutrals; navy and cream. Khadijah has designed and produced two prints specifically for the collection; a white floral with butterflies and Chinese calligraphy and a cobalt cloud pattern — both uniquely oriental.

Together the prints and plains were subtly colour blocked and juxtaposed to create a refreshing spring palette. For this collection, the designer had also reproduced Chinese art in sequin and cut glass embellishments for different pieces. It was a versatile collection which could be worn in many different ways and to that end there was an array of pants, tops, jackets and dresses that can be mixed and matched and dressed up or down depending on how one chooses to pair them.

Next on the runway was Muse with an Autumn/Winter 2012/13 women’s wear, hitting deep at the feminine heart. The collection consisted of pieces worked with delicate sequins in animal prints, as well geometric patterns. Fabrics used were crepes in powder blue, molten purple, emerald green and black.

The last designer collection on the runway belonged to Mohsin Ali — women’s wear collection ‘Baran-i-Ishq’. Taking inspiration from the joy and rebirth that the season of spring brings, Mohsin’s latest collection celebrated the return of the season with a collection based in chiffon, jamawar and silk.

The first day’s finale was the ‘Trends Show’, which aimed to highlight the trends for the upcoming season through 15 ‘looks’ put together from the works of fourteen participating designers.

With Pakistan’s leading fashion and celebrity stylist Tariq Amin offering his savoir faire as creative director, the Islamabad Fashion Week (IFW) 2012 teed off Tuesday night, surprising the audience with a dramatic collection of haute couture by enterprising students and emerging designers — all of them geared up to make a mark on Pakistan’s booming fashion industry.

Organised by Triple E Events, the three-day fashion fair communicated a strong message: harnessed in the right direction, there is no end to the verve and creativity of Pakistani youth — be they designers, models, choreographers, or backstage coordinators whose contributions often remain unpublicised.

From Yasir Ikram’s arty infusion of ethnic sensibility with contemporary cuts to Erum Khan’s eclectic mix of eastern and western silhouettes and Sadia’s imaginative merger of prints and fabrics, IFW 2012 had it all.

Islamabad Fashion Week: Soul meets hip and happening

The show’s first segment featured a display of the thesis work of 12 students from the Gujranwala-based School of Fine Art, Design and Architecture housed within GIFT University. These students of the graduating class of 2011 completed their collections within a record eight-week timeline. With each student contributing no more than four high-fashion custom-made garments, nobody wasted the opportunity to flaunt the hands-on experience that they had gained during their academic pursuit.

If one were to analyze each student’s contribution in relation to the philosophy governing their designs, then Yasir Ikram’s ‘Splendours of Rajasthan’ was a successful attempt at paying homage to the country’s rich heritage through an explicit focus on traditional motifs and vibrant colours. “I have tried to infuse ethnic skills with contemporary cuts,” he stated during a backstage tête-à-tête.

Qamar’s ‘Deconstruct to Reconstruct’ collection was inspired by the three Rs-Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. “My message to the world is to limit their needs and to protect our world. I have used pre-manufactured garments to translate my idea into reality,” he said. Tamsila Yaqoob, whose collection was titled ‘Immaculate Souls,’ described a wandering heart’s quest to find a spotless beauty. “We are caught in a race for immaculate souls. My dresses communicate purity and beauty,” she said.

On a somber note, Samra Rayasat’s project ‘Painful Reality of Life’ focused on highlighting traits peculiar to the different stages of a man’s life. “In trying to find peace for himself, he ends up losing his own life. Finding no relief in clubs and casinos, he decides to commit suicide,” she explained.

Ammara Butt’s ‘Twilight and Illusions’ collection, on the other extreme, was influenced by the greatest pop star of the century, Michael Jackson. “I admire the love and loyalty of his fans for him. My dresses pay tribute to his life and work,” she shared.

Faraz Abid’s ‘Chic Hoardings’ was based on the concept of interactive billboards. “Even though my garments communicate messages that have commercial value, I have made a conscious attempt not to compromise the cozy comfort of the wearer,” he explained.

Samar Yasir’s collection, ‘Birth of a New World’ was inspired by the powerful journey of the human mind as it relishes the new-found concepts of freedom in modern architecture. “My clothes have a tinge of abstract impressionism. At the same time, I have tried to retain an element of modernity,” she remarked.

Maryam Jabeen’s ‘Third Eye’ collection was an interesting portrayal of the colours anticipated by a born-blind person who wishes to paint. “Although he cannot see the world with his two eyes, he can feel the colours of love, hatred and purity with his third eye. My garments revolve around the imagination of a blind person,” she articulated.

Moving on, the ‘Bedoiun Underwater’ collection of Samavia Tahir revolved around a bedouin woman who fantasises being a mermaid while ‘Iqra Saeed’s ‘Bionic Realm’ described the extraordinary strength of today’s empowered woman. “I have tried to emphasize the freedom of expression of today’s woman and her ability to lead in a royal kingdom where her bionic strength illuminates an ordinary woman’s life,” she explained.

The first segment closed with Mohsin Ranjha and Sayyed Ishrat Ali’s collections titled ‘InsomN!a’ and ‘Retreat to Caves.’ While Mohsin’s work symbolised the revolt of a deserted man who is not allowed to pursue his ambitions and who eventually decides to treat the world on his own terms, Ishrat’s collection was influenced by the ongoing mortal combat of terrorism. “It seems today’s human being is no different than the primitive man confined to caves and fighting for basic survival,” he commented. All garments presented by the 12 students were designed and tailored under the guidance of their thesis supervisor Adnan Arshad.

The second segment featured an exceptionally brilliant and easy-to-wear-and-carry collection by Sadia. Atif Yahya, the creative director of Sadia Designers Collection 2012, claimed having come a long way from cotton yarns, dyeing and weaving expertise to a whole new fashion proposition where vibrant floral, digital, graphic, and abstract prints are twisted, flipped and faded through hi-tech printing methods to give a fresh edge to summer wear. ‘When it comes to mixing prints, the rules are that there are no rules,’ is the philosophy that governs Sadia’s lawn.

Although Sadia has favoured ultraviolet colours, there is a strong counter from the pastel contingent for a simmering summer. Not only that; she does not shy away from incorporating a winning new take on minimalism to prove that simple doesn’t have to be bland. She has delightfully mixed scarcely visible metallic threads while retaining the softness of the fabric. All her designs were rich and modern and defined what a dynamic woman should look like in the modern century.

Next came an opulent chiffon collection by Lakhani Silk Mills (LSM), a leading name in international markets. Driven by the creativity of Tehsin Muzammil and Naeem Fazal, LSM has become synonymous with quality and style.

Erum Khan, an emerging designer, offered formal and semi-formal couture with an eclectic mix of eastern and western silhouettes. She juxtaposes elegance with abstract themes enhanced by vivacious trimmings that make her sense of style feminine and glamorous. Erum started her career in 2009 and formally launched her label ‘Medley’ in 2010. Presenting her ‘Block Rock’ collection, she shared that it is inspired by two opposite ideas, which are geometry and rock music. “Block Rock is about making the rules and breaking them. The silhouette engages the 40’s, 80’s and 90’s into a mix of bold designs which are fun and practical at the same time,” she explained.

In the end, Jazib Qamar, who has a strong presence in menswear apparel, captured everyone’s attention with experimental work of a quality comparable to international standards. Jazib’s love for culture inspires him to use traditional colours. The Multani ‘chappals’ worn by male models showcasing his collection were truly striking.

The show was choreographed by Pomy Gohar, with Jugno Saloon offering make-up for models. Zurrain Iman did a tremendous a job of coordination while Madiha managed the backstage quite well.

Expression his views, Tariq Amin hoped to have a fashion week in Islamabad on a yearly basis. “The young models and designers that you see here today are the future of this country. They will soon be part of the booming fashion and textile industry,” he projected.

Even though the first day of IFW 2012 was overall a treat, there was some restlessness on several counts. Firstly, the hall was not air-conditioned; secondly, the audience had to leave the hall after every segment for lighting readjustments and cleaning of the ramp; thirdly, the novice ushers were constantly pestering the audience for one petty reason or the other, and lastly, there was not much to drink and nothing to munch during the four-hour event.

ISLAMABAD: A fusion of east-meets-west did the rounds on the second day of the Islamabad Fashion Week on Wednesday. The ensemble was ethnic in spirit, incorporating some grunge ideas making the best of both worlds.

Fashion Era Institute of Art and Design

While going the spiritual route, the Fashion Era Institute of Art and Design unleashed embellished turbans and Sufi robes. To accentuate the hybrid theme, it threw in khussas and pompoms. The collection featured calligraphy and hand-painted graffiti embossed on a palette of white, green, orange, green and brown. The models wore prayer beads loosely hung around their necks. The juxtaposition of khaddi and chiffon was smartly done in bright hues. Along the same lines, Jinnah caps and jasmine shalwars complimented the look.

The Islamabad-based designer took inspiration from goddesses. Male models paraded shirtless while female model sauntered down from the other end of the runway. All models wore shades, with females wearing crème coats. With chic cuts and fur props, the showcase by far the most appropriate.

Iqra Institute of Fashion Design

Iqra students showcased their mini-thesis from textile to fashion design. The collection boasted western cut gowns with ornamentation, inspired by Japanese sakura flowers and goddesses. The cuts were neat with finely stitched western silhouette, ranging from black, mauve, purple and white. The shibori tie and dye method was used.

Ranga Rang

The local design house by Seema Khan had some graceful epiphany and bridal wear with a western twist. Think long flowering dresses in electric blue, purple, red and embroidery along the borders and neck. The highlight was a red lehngha with gold embroidery along the choli. Chiffon was the staple fabric with jamawar lining and zari, the designer played it safe.

Make some noise for the dandy boys

Danish Wakeel, London-based fashion designer presented a men’s wear collection titled “Aqua dandy”.  With predominant sky blue tinged with grey, black and white. The net dress shirts had narrow waists and knee-length shorts. The look was very urban with brown satin pants and crinkled coats. The style went from casual to formal to metro sexual. The black and white printed shirts had various architectural monuments printed on them. The formal shoes were patent and pointed. Some of the pants had fur trimming on the sides. The silhouette was slim fitted and body hugging but very masculine. The collection was very European, flaunting Top Shop shoes.  Nomair, a model commented, “The fashion industry is still evolving, we have to follow suit.”

Faux pas

If not for the power cuts, the bad music system marred the effect of an otherwise decent show. Protocol was perhaps on the top of the list for the organisers, who preferred entertaining foreign press over letting locals speak to models backstage. Many models also lacked the oomph to pull off their look.

Film director Mahesh Bhatt, a regular visitor to Pakistan, joins his brother producer Mukesh Bhatt in their new film ‘Blood Money’, which opened in Rawalpindi on Friday.

Directed by Vishal Mahadkar, Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri play the leads. Like every formula-ridden film, Kunal and Amrita are in love. The girl’s parents oppose their being together. Notwithstanding, they get married and move to Cape Town in South Africa. Kunal finds a dream-come-true job with a diamond merchant. He is bestowed with a posh house, a new car and much more. The price he must pay for these luxuries is not hard work or discipline, but be an integral part of the mafia and underworld. The more he tries to get out of this mess, the deeper he gets into it.

The plot has similarities here and there to Hollywood flick ‘Blood Diamond’, a crime thriller in war-torn Africa, directed by Edward Zwick in 2006. Mahesh Bhatt himself denies any similarity. Bhatt also denies that he is rehashing his earlier film ‘Naam’.

Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt are known for low-budget quickies, but ‘Blood Money’ has decent if not super production effects. Selection of locales, camerawork and editing are above average. In music, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Chaahat’, composed by Jeet Ganguly, is soothing. Other numbers composed by several composers are rendered by Mustafa Zahid.

Blood Moon Therapy is a New York City-based rock band, recently formed by frontman Michael Lombardi. Lombardi starred in the hit TV show ‘Rescue Me’ and was the lead singer for the group Apache Stone. The band will also be performing with Abbas Ali Khan’s Sufi Synthesis Project. Rock music first developed in the United States in the 1950s and has evolved into an art form that celebrates the American value of free expression. app

True Brew Records in collaboration with ProperGanda and Ammach Productions organised two days of live performance by local talents Jimmy Khan and Poor Rich Boys on Friday and Saturday. In an effort to revive the live music circuit in Lahore, True Brew Records has established a performance venue in the heart of Lahore, titled Live at True Brew, which was launched with two-day musical performances this weekend before a jam-packed house.

Jimmy Khan kicked off both nights with his acoustic solo performance, followed by the main show by the Poor Rich Boys, which played to a jam-packed audience.

Poor Rich Boy is a Lahore-based band that comprises of Shehzad Noor, Zain Ahsan, Raavail Sattar, Zain Molvi, Danish Khwaja and Umer Khan. The band has been around for about three years, while the current line up came together in 2011 and started work on their debut album, tentatively being called, ‘Old Money’. The band has already released three singles from the album, earning for themselves a substantial fan following.

“This Friday and Saturday night afforded Poor Rich Boys the sort of performing space and sound quality that one rarely comes across in the Pakistani underground scene,” one of the band’s members told The News. On the other hand, Jimmy Khan, another Lahore based musician, who opened for Poor Rich Boy at the same event, has also been active in the music scene for three years. His first single, ‘Pehla Pyar’ was released to critical acclaim last year. He’s currently in the process of recording his album out of which the second single ‘Aisay Kaisay’ (produced by Jamal Rahman at True Brew Records) is slated for release in the coming week.

Mian Naveed with Mela showed a mixed collection of menswear and women’s wear with solid colours and play of cutwork fabric used generously in sculpting the collection that comprised both classic eastern and purely western cuts. Showstopper Mehreen Syed in Victorian black looked both chic and elegant that the designer aimed for with his craft. The theme was a celebration of Punjabi culture and it scored on that count.

Sanya Muneer launched her first screen print collection together with her sister, Seveen, in what was defined as easy-to-wear and extraordinary in its design sensibility. Datch showed menswear in daywear titled Next Vintage with graphics inspired by the sea, Heritage freak for casuals inspired by safari/military trends and rockstar soul in Urban Chic with denim and knitwear fabric.

Feeha Jamshed touched a nerve with her sentimental value collection dedicated to the memory of her sister, Minnaal, who passed away in Paris last year, and also for Rooha Hafeez. It comprised silks, cotton, velvet, muslin and cotton jersey with cuts that were typical of the ‘90s — all showed by models who walked the ramp slowly with a long-stemmed red rose out of respect for the departed to the tune of music titled For an Angel by Mustafa Ali Jamshed. Mahira in a beige dress with a vibrant red long coat with Kashmiri embroidery was the showstopper in this segment.

During the 15-minute mid-break, Ayesha Tammy Haq took the opportunity to announce the competition between designers to design the new PIA uniform but owing to the city situation the deadlines could not be met. However, she reminded all those present that the designs would be presented to the authorities concerned at a later date.

She also announced the launch of the first holistic ethical fashion platform in South Asia, a region which is known for beauty and richness of arts and crafts. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be the countries to promote ethical fashion with Bibi Russell helping out in its promotion from Bangladesh along with Ajai Vir Singh from Sri Lanka, Nakul Sen from India and Rizwan Beyg from Pakistan, and joined by many others, including Agatha Ruiz de la Prada from Spain, around the world. The future of fashion is ethical and the tour starts in September from Columbo, Karachi, Dhaka and then Bangalore, she added.

Agatha Ruiz de la Prada — a Spanish royalty whose designs are the most sought after commodity in Spain along with a large clientelle base that spreads across 120 countries — showed in Pakistan for the first time during the Showcase 2012 with oversize coats, tuxedos, wide-leg pants and jumpsuits, flared dresses and skirts in wool, cotton and silk fabric of choice. Her accessories included leather bags with heart motifs and colourful, transparent bags. Fluorescent colours with thick knitted fitted pants, matching platform heels set the ramp on fire as models serenaded to the tune of I Feel Love.

Mehreen Syed in a spectacularly mind-boggling full-feathered shocking pink and neon yellow long dress said volumes about the designer’s sense of heightened style.

Monia Farooqui showed her Chandni Bar collection dedicated to the bar girls of yesteryears.

The powerhouse that is brand Amir Adnan is singularly accredited with the revival of the sherwani along with flawless craftsmanship. He showed it as an alternative to the jacket with fine silk embellishments while retaining the commitment to high fashion and luxurious comfort.

Known as the Couture Queen of Pakistan, Honey Waqar presented Maharani Kohinoor with the liberal use of gota, semi-precious stones, dazzling sequins, Swaroski crystals, antique zardozy and embroidery with grace and beauty with jewellery by Bushra Aftab. The vibrant colour spectrum lent an added sense of style to the regal presentation fit for a princess, or in this case a blue-blooded maharani.

KARACHI: The third day of ‘Showcase’, a four-day fashion show being held at the DHA Golf Club, featured designer works of nine national and international designers.

The show started Wednesday night with the presentation of emerging designer, Maheen Karim. The title of the presentation was ‘Tres Magnifique – epitomised femininity’. It was a fusion of dazzling, bold spring colours, with flowy feminine silks and chiffons in draped, flowing silhouettes that made for a collection of wonderful resort-wear, fun-spirited holiday eveningwear and luxury occasions wear. Each of the floral motifs, including gold plated ones, used to decorate these precious pieces was individually hand-made, giving the garment a timeless appeal. Chunky jewellery, that takes the form of fabric embellishment, made these pieces even more special and added magic and luster.

The colour palate of bold oranges, embellished ivories that melt into a flaming canary yellow and regal hues of green and flamboyant turquoise, all showed vibrance and freshness.

The second presentation entitled ‘Scent of Women’ a romantic and chic collection, was from talented designer Zarimna Khan. Her designs were inspired by the spring breeze, new blossoming love and born-again serenity. The collection had soft drapes of light chiffon combined with lace. Violets and roses enhanced the serene look of the pieces.

The third presentation was from Ishtiaque Afzal Khan, arguably the best performance of the day. He presented ‘Patchalicious’, a collection inspired by Seminole patchwork, one of the oldest forms of clothing. Afzal recycled scraps of cloth into beautiful, eye-popping fabrics by recombining strips of cloth or ribbon. Almost every strip of fabric was salvageable even those just half an inch wide. The colours were used in a fine balance to create harmony and style, while each pattern had a name and story behind it.

Ibrahim Hanif’s, was the fourth presentation of the day for showcase 2012. He used mostly bright colours such as yellows, oranges, pinks and reds. Ibrahim had also chosen navy blue and dark colours in appliqués and had applied colours like orange, shocking pink and reds on it. Motifs used included fish, buses, trucks, rickshaws, peacocks, birds and flowers. Silhouette included tops, skirts, shalwar kameezes and ijars. The jewellery complemented the outfits by encapsulating the typical traditional stroke of truck art and Pakistani culture.

The fifth presentation, ‘Jhirki’ was from Wardha Saleem. It started with a video clip of bird and a girl. The collection paid homage to the understated sophistication of the domestic sparrow that adds enchanting beauty and melody to our drab lives. It had interesting western silhouettes and drapes all in muted tones of brown, beige, whites and blacks.

The sixth presentation of the day was from Bibi Russell. According to the speaker, she had been fascinated by two of the most common things in Bangladesh, the ‘Gamcha’ (poor people’s towel) and ‘Rickshaw Art’. Her showcase 2012 Spring/Summer Prêt collection showed the magical touch of the self-taught skills of the Gamcha weavers and rickshaw painters, using a 100 percent natural hand woven cotton, in seasonal shades of yellow, orange and green. Her presentation was joyful with all models were dancing to melodious tunes.

The seventh presentation, Yasir Mirza’s collection of ‘Hiphopistan’ was a tribute to young Pakistanis. It reflected what Pakistani youth wanted fun, style, excellence and non-violence in their lives. Mirza did his best to portray these sentiments through clothing. This Spring Summer 2012 collection of affordable fashion also attempted to inspire young people in Pakistan to strive towards the betterment of our beloved country.

Ayesha Khurram’s prêt wear collection can be defined as music in motion. She allowed fabrics to breathe and move with a life of their own, tucking and restricting them only when and where absolutely necessary. Her collection was inspired by the poetry and verses of Faiz Ahmed Faiz and icons of popular culture such as Marilyn Monroe. Ayesha’s designs were an amalgamation of rich cultural eastern traditions and western icons. This Spring Summer 2012 collection of affordable fashion also attempted to inspire young people in Pakistan to strive towards the betterment of our beloved country

The 10-day workshop began on March 19 and is to end on Wednesday, according to a press release issued on Monday.

Over 30 artisans, eight women among them, are attending the workshop. Mr Gopaldas, who has a Pride of Pakistan award to his credit, is the most distinguished among the participants.

The participants are being trained by Fayyaz Ahmed, an accomplished craftsman from Kehror Pacca, a town near Multan, said the release.
