Pakistan can never become a stable and energy-secure country in the absence of critical projects which are being made controversial for specific purpose, it said.
The Supreme Court should immediately take notice of the situation and initiate action against the lobbies working to fulfill the agenda of foreign powers and multinational oil companies, said Punjab Forum President Baig Raj.
Speaking at a meeting regarding the energy crisis, he said the Planning Commission (PC) has sent very wrong signals by opposing the Thar Coal project. The PC should not raise objections on public sector enterprises which are wasting more resources than the nation spends on defence, he added. Raj said Dr Samar Mubarik Mand should not be punished for trying to generate electricity without the involvement of multinationals and that the nation remembers his services as member of a team that made Pakistan’s defence impregnable.
The meeting observed that some elements successfully transformed a purely technical issue of the construction of the KBD into a burning political issue which is keeping the country insecure.
Influential owners of IPPs and rental power projects have also started a campaign against efforts to produce cheap energy. The meeting welcomed MQM-Haqiqi chief Afaq Ahmed’s statement in which he vowed to unveil the names of politicians from Sindh who received bribes from India to oppose the KBD. The names of politicians from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who want Pakistan to plunge into darkness should also be brought to limelight, it was demanded.
The meeting was attended by Hydro power expert engineer Shahabuddin, scientist Dr Riaz Ahmad, Punjab Forum General Secretary Malik Zaieem and others. They said India is making the most dams, outside the USA and China, but it will block any move to build feasible dams in Pakistan. They lamented that Pakistani companies are providing cement for the construction of dozens of the dams in India for profit despite knowing that New Delhi wants Pakistan to become a desert.

LAHORE, May 16: Two Turkish companies will be operating 130 new buses of international standard on different routes while the number of buses on all other routes of Lahore will also be increased.

Turkish company Albayrak will operate 100 new air-conditioned buses on four routes while another Turkish company, OuzPak, will operate 30 new buses from railway station to Sabzazar, said Lahore Transport Company Chairman Khwaja Ahmad Hassan during a meeting of LTC Board of Directors held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat here on Wednesday.

A strategy has been adopted for making all non-functional routes operational in order to provide efficient and affordable transport facilities to Lahorites. A state-of-the-art transport related infrastructure was being provided in the city and the LTC was making
hectic efforts in planning regulation and facilitation in strengthening the urban transport sector.

Mr Khwaja said the provision of free transport facilities to senior citizens and disabled people was being ensured in all air-conditioned buses. The LTC was providing all possible assistance to private transport companies, he said.

LTC Chief Executive Officer Khwaja Haider Latif said all wings of the company had been made active to achieve the desired targets.

KARACHI, May 15: At least seven people, including three Muttahida Qaumi Movement workers, were shot dead in different parts of the city on Tuesday.

A former councillor of the MQM Haq Parast group was gunned down near his home in PECHS Block 2, said a duty officer at the Ferozabad police station.

Gulshan SP Salam Shaikh said Anwar Alam aka Babu Bhai, 38, was at a playground near his home in the evening when three men riding a motorbike arrived there and opened fire on him and escaped.

He said the police collected several spent bullet casings of 9mm pistol from the crime-scene.

The police said the victim sustained two gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he died during treatment. A large number of party workers reached the JPMC.

Following the incident, unidentified men fired into the air, forcing closure of shops on Tariq Road and Bahadurabad and spreading tension in the areas of Khalid Bin Waleed Road and Tipu Sultan Road.

He was an active worker of the MQM Unit 63 and a former UC-7 councillor, the SP said, adding that it was a targeted killing.Earlier, two other MQM workers, both residents of Gulshan-i-Maymar Sector 51-1, were found shot dead at different places along the Superhighway on Tuesday, police said.

They added that gunny bags containing the bodies of Mohammad Azhar Ali, 33, and Kamran Ali, 22, were found in the Memon graveyard and Ganna Mandi within the remit of the Malir Cantt and Sohrab Goth police stations, respectively.

The bodies each bearing torture marks and four gunshot wounds were shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities.

Sohrab Goth SDPO Iftikhar Lodhi told Dawn that the victims were kidnapped in the Maymar area on Monday.

He said both were active workers of the MQM’s Ahsanabad unit of the Gulshan-i-Maymar sector. The police said Azhar was a Pakistan Steel Mills employee and Kamran worked at a private company.

Residents told the police that before being kidnapped, the victims had fought with someone.

After the victims’ identification, a number of MQM activists reached the JPMC and raised slogans against the government.

Following the autopsy, the police handed over the bodies to the victims’ heirs.

When the two bodies were brought to Ahsanabad, traders pulled down shutters.

Targeted killing

A young man was targeted apparently in a sectarian attack near the Inquiry Office in Nazimabad, police said.

Syed Mehdi Raza, 32, was going to offer prayers at Jamia Imamia Imambargah in Nazimabad No 2, when two armed men riding a motorbike sprayed him with bullets and sped away, said a duty officer at the Nazimabad police station.

He added that the victim sustained four gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died during treatment.

Nazimabad SHO Iqbal Sheikh said the victim was a resident of Sector 5C-1, New Karachi, and worked at a printing press in Nazimabad.

The victim’s elder brother, Riaz Raza, was a trusty of Imambargah Aal-i-Muhammad in New Karachi, the police said.

Police collected five spent bullet casings of 9mm pistol from the crime-scene.

The police described the murder as a sectarian killing, but did not rule out political grounds as a possible motive for the murder.

They said the victim was an MQM sympathiser also.

Mehdi was the youngest among his 10 siblings. His funeral prayers were offered at Imambargah Aal-i-Muhammad after Maghrib.

Tension gripped parts of New Karachi with closure of shops during the funeral prayers.

Seeking the arrest of culprits involved in sectarian killings, Karachi Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen president Mohammad Mehdi said 36 Shia people had been killed in the city over the past five months. Most of them were targeted in the Nazimabad area, he added.

Bodies found

In the Ilyas Goth area of Korangi, two young men were found shot dead, said an official at the Ibrahim Hyderi police station.

He said both bodies, spotted near the navy building in Korangi Sector 51-B, remained unidentified.

They looked like Afghans, said SHO Naik Mohammad Jakhrani, adding that the victims sustained two gunshot wounds to their heads.

The bodies were shifted to the JPMC for a post-mortem examination and later to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

In the Bakra Piri area of Malir, the body of an unidentified man was found, said a duty officer at the Malir City police station.

The victim had sustained a bullet wound to the head, said ASI Kazim, adding that he appeared to be Siraiki.

The duty officer said police did not find any clue to his identity. The body was shifted to the JPMC for a post-mortem examination, and later to the Edhi morgue.

College registrar, son wounded

The registrar of the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology and his son were wounded in a gun attack within the remit of the New Town police station.

Ghulam Bashir and his son, Farooq Ahmed, were targeted near the National Stadium by eight armed men riding six motorbikes.

The wounded father and son were shifted to a nearby private hospital, where doctors described their condition as stable.

An FIR (260/2012) was later lodged against unidentified men on a complaint of Mr Bashir.

ISLAMABAD - The International Day of Families is being observed with the theme `Ensuring work family balance’ across the globe including Pakistan to bring out the significance of families as fundamental unit of humanity.
A wide range of events were organised in this regard, which include: workshops, seminars, exhibitions, discussions to raise awareness of the theme, policy meeting for public officials and the launch of campaigns for public policies to strengthen and support family units.
This day is observed on May 15 every year and proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with a resolution to reflects the importance of the international community attaches to families.
Secretary-General, UN, Ban Ki Moon while giving a message on the International Day of Families, highlighted the need for work-family balance, aiming to help workers everywhere provide for their families financially and emotionally, while also contributing to the socio-economic development of their societies. “On this International Day of Families, let us renew our pledge to promote work-family balance for the benefit of families and society at large, he said.”
Jawad Ali, a university student while talking to APP here on Tuesday said, “We are the blessed people belong to a region, where family bonds are very strong, as our culture, traditions, customs and most prior our religion highlights the importance of family and give us opportunity to strengthen them.
Nasreen Qureshi, a professor of social sciences said, “This day provides a chance to government, organisations and individuals to encourage knowledge of the troubles, strengths and issues relating to families.
There is dire need to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families and finding a solution for its improvement, she stated.
Millions of people around the world lack decent working conditions and the social support to care for their families, while a number of countries offer generous leave provisions for mothers and fathers, however paternity leave provisions are still rare in the majority of developing countries, she added.

PROVINCIAL Minister for Law Rana Sanaullah Khan said instead of becoming a spokesman of the corrupt federal government, the Punjab governor should teach the prime minister to obey the law.

He said disregard for the decisions of judiciary by Peoples Party has brought a bad name to the country.

Commenting on statements of Governor Punjab Latif Khosa and Raja Riaz, Rana Sanaullah said that a corrupt President Zardari would not be able to save the inefficient PM and the president would have to bring back the looted money to the country. He said that the Punjab government cannot be compared with the corrupt federal government. He said that transparency was the hallmark of the Punjab government while PPP was known for loot and corruption. He said that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was expressing solidarity with the people of Punjab by representing the sentiments of the people against the worst loadshedding. He said that the federal government was punishing the people of Punjab through unjust policy on loadshedding. He said that besides a huge loss of billions of rupees to industrial sector of Punjab, lakhs of labourers were losing their jobs. He said that if raising voice for the solution of people’s problems was a crime, PML-N leadership was ready to commit this offence again and again.

The Sindh High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the IG of Sindh, the home secretary and the prosecutor-general, with a direction to the home secretary to file a policy document, if any, on the required qualifications and training of police investigation officers.

The court issued this direction while dealing with the bail confirmation matter of three applicants in an illegal confinement and attempted murder case.

Ghulam Ghous, Ebad and Mohammad Shafaat sought confirmation of their bails in illegal confinement and attempt to murder case.

Complainant Mehmood Khan alleged that his elder brother had been illegally confined and beaten up by the applicants in the Orangi Town area on July 16, 2011, and when he and his uncle tried to rescue his brother, the applicants had them injured with firearms.

The SHC’s single bench, headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam, said that it had been noticed in many cases that the investigation was not being done by qualified investigation officers.

The court observed that the qualifications of an officer needed to be enhanced and that they should also be familiar with forensic matters and sound investigation skills.

The Prosecutor-General informed the court that in another matter the High Court had also observed that frequent transfers of investigation officers had been hampering investigation that was invariably affecting the conviction of the accused.

The court directed the office to place the order with such connected matter to examine the minimum qualification of investigation officers and their tenure.

The court also issued notices to the home secretary, the IG of Sindh and the prosecutor-general, calling for their comments in the matter.

In the meanwhile, the court dismissed the bail applications of Ebad and Ghulam Ghous while confirmed that of Mohammad Shafaat.

Detention case

The Sindh High Court directed the Superintendent Central Prison Karachi to produce a detainee on a petition against the illegal detention of a man by the police.

Petitioner Khair Mohammad submitted that his son Shahid Babak was arrested by the CID in Thatta on April 23 where he had gone to attend the wedding ceremony of their relatives and after keeping him in unlawful detention it showed him arrested in a fake police encounter case.

Petitioner’s counsel, Salahuddin Gandapur, submitted that the detainee was kept in unlawful confinement and falsely implicated in the case, and prayed the court to release him after recording his statement.

The SSP of CID, Chaudhry Aslam, filed a statement before the court and denied the allegation of the petitioner.

He submitted that the detainee happened to be a criminal and belonged to the banned People’s Amn Committee.

He submitted that the detainee had been absconding in a double murder case and was arrested by the police after a shootout.

He prayed the court to dismiss the petition as the detainee was now in judicial custody.

The SHC’s division bench, headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar, issued a notice to the Superintendent of Central Prison and directed him to produce the detainee on May 25.

Notice to IG Prison, others

The SHC issued notices to IG Prison, Home Secretary and others on a petition against the appointment of a junior grade officer as Superintendent of Hyderabad Prison.

Petitioner Pir Shabbir Jan Sarhandi submitted that the government had appointed a Grade-18 officer as Superintendent of Hyderabad Prison when he was on leave.

He submitted that he had applied for cancellation of his leave and was willing to join his post but the government appointed a junior officer in his place instead.

He prayed the court to allow him to resume the charge of Hyderabad Prison by setting aside the impugned notification issued by the additional chief secretary in this regard.

After conducting preliminary hearing of the petition, the SHC’s division bench, headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar, issued notices to Additional Chief Secretary, IG Sindh and others and called for their comments on May 21.

Petition against harassment

The Sindh High Court issued a notice to the Advocate General of Sindh on a petition of a woman against harassment.

Petitioner Zubeida Parveen submitted that she had married Mohammad Shafiq on May 8 of her own freewill, but being annoyed with the marriage her family members had been threatening her and her spouse of dire consequences.

She prayed the court to direct the police to provide her protection and restrain the private respondents from harassing her and her in-laws.

It is a joyous occasion for Shua Javed, as her father, Dr Khalil Chishty, is about to return home after languishing in prison and staying under house arrest in Rajasthan for 20 years.

The family does not know the exact date of arrival, and for now they are relying on television for any news on the matter. The eldest son is in Delhi, and will be accompanying Chishty, the 80-year old virologist, on his trip back home. He has not been in touch and neither has the government.

“We are overjoyed, and feel like celebrating, but the state of our father’s health is critical, therefore assuring his wellbeing will be our first priority.”

The news of his release has spread, and family members living abroad are making arrangements to come to the family residence in North Nazimabad. A daughter from Canada and a niece from Saudi Arabia will arrive any day. Chishty’s wife, though old, frail and deaf, has understood that her husband will be back, if only for a while.

The stay which was approved by the Indian Supreme Court on humanitarian grounds, will continue for five months, during which the “family is hoping for a miracle”.

“Let’s see how we can fight our case here,” says a hopeful Javed.

In 1992, Chishty was visiting his mother in Ajmer when he was arrested after a man was murdered during a clash between two groups at the premises of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty’s shrine.

He was later convicted and jailed for life for the murder. In January 2011, the sentence was overturned and he was granted bail three months later.

However, the bail was effectively a house arrest, as Chishty was unable to leave his brother’s house in Ajmer, as the court had confiscated his travel documents. He was granted bail by India’s apex court on April 9, which asked him to make a separate plea for permission to visit Pakistan.

Dr Chishty had to submit half a million rupees as security on the directions of the Indian Supreme Court, which was paid by Mahesh Bhatt and other well-wishers, and will have to submit his passport to the High Commission once in Pakistan.

A distinguished Saudi non-governmental organisation (NGO) sponsored by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia has announced the construction of 5,000 houses for the flood-stricken people in various areas of Pakistan.

An agreement was inked on Tuesday between the King Abdullah Relief Campaign for Pakistani People (KARCPP) and the administration at the Saudi mission in Diplomatic Enclave in the presence of Saudi Ambassador for Pakistan Dr Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Saleh al-Ghadeer and Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Dr Farooq Sattar.

The federal minister paid rich tribute to the Saudi leadership and Ambassador al-Ghadeer for their unparallel support for the devastated people in every calamity coming across in Pakistan ever in the past. “We have seen that the Saudi ambassador was found helping the people in the past even before the arrival of the officials concerned for the devastated people,” he said.

Ambassador al-Ghadeer termed Pakistan his own country and said: “King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz ordered me as he heard about the floods in Pakistan to proceed ahead with maximum possible assistance for the victims of the disaster”. The ambassador, who reached each nook and corner of the affected areas and spend days and nights with the affected people at their places of shelter discarding security warnings and protocols, said he did this all due to the instructions of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques who had special affection for Pakistan and its people. The ambassador celebrated his Eid with the affected people said it provided him immense internal satisfaction as he was helping his own people and brethren. He appealed to the companies dealing in construction material to supply the required stuff on cheaper rates so that they should also become partner in blessings.

He said King Abdullah wanted to see the prosperous and healthy Pakistan since the assistance was being provided to the flood affected families as per the directions of the leadership of Saudi Arabia purely on humanitarian grounds. The financial assistance is being provided by Saudi public to express solidarity with the flood-ravaged families confronted with the multiple challenges emerged after the torrential monsoon rains of 2010-2011. In the first phase 180 houses will be build in different areas of Pakistan where a large number of flood-ravaged families are enduring hardship. The KARCPP will construct the remaining houses in different locations to help normalise the situation being faced by the flood affected people of Pakistan, he said.

The ambassador reminded that KARCPP had also signed an agreement with the Helping Hand for relief and development projects involving installation of water pumps for hospitals, mosques and local community living in Punjab and Sindh flood zone. This gigantic scheme will benefit about 25,000 residents of these areas.

The ambassador said a renowned Saudi company al-Munajam had contributed the construction of 5,000 but its owner did not want to be named in this noble cause in accordance with ordains of Shariah. The task given by the KARCPP to different companies operating in Pakistan would be accomplished under the guidance of Saudi ambassador Abdul Aziz al-Ghadeer who is taking personal interest in helping people of Pakistan and extending full support of since the start of campaign to bring the cherishing moments back to the flood-bettered areas.

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Syed Munawwar Hassan has said that the government’s decision to restore NATO supply would be an open invitation for the US to attack Pakistan.
Addressing the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) here on Tuesday, Hassan said that the parliament had decided on several occasions to close NATO supply, demand an apology from the NATO forces for their attack on Salala Check Post as well as bringing to an end the drone attacks. “Unfortunately, parliament could not implement its own decisions and all resolutions and other decisions could not bear fruit for Pakistan and its sovereignty”, he added.

Hassan said if the political forces did not formulate a joint strategy for the fulfillment of parliament’s resolution and all those decisions that had been taken in this regard, anarchy could spread in the society.

JI Ameer further said, “The people of Pakistan had actually voted against the US policies being implemented by the dictators but unfortunately the succeeding democratic government did not shun previous policies.”

He said that the government did not obey the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan only for the sake of saving some personalities while such attitude will damage the rule of law.

Talking about the May 12 carnage, Hassan said that those responsible for the carnage were today government’s allies, adding that the people should not cast votes to a party responsible for the bloodshed. asghar azad
