The general body meeting of the Floral Art Society of Pakistan (FASP) was an outdoor workshop held in the scenic surroundings of Murree, says a press release.

Members were divided into five groups and they were required to make floral arrangements using the natural surroundings. They were encouraged to make use of plant material found in that area. They set out to work in doing what they do best, using innovative ideas to outdo one another.

Waqar Boolani’s group used a burnt tree as the background to their arrangement made out with red, orange and green plant material some woven through to create design.

Ghazala Abdullah’s group used the embedded boulders to produce the right gradation to its gradually flowing arrangement on the ground.

Farhat Zaman’s group used a stump of tree as a base and connected it with the main arrangement made alongside of a tree joining them with a verse ‘Inhi patheroon pur chal kar agar aah sako to aaon, Mere ghar kay raastey mein koi kehkashan nahi hay’.

Mussarat Zain’s group design flowed along a tree and curved along a rock, manipulating leaves, using baby pinecones as they caught the sun by adding a shimmer of gold into their arrangement.

Asma Ansar’s group used a shrub as the background for their arrangement. They used bamboos to support the freestanding arrangement, twining twigs to make disks and stapled leaves to give a flow to their exhibit.

All the members incorporated materials collected

from the surroundings like wild buttercup, daisies, bark of trees, baby pinecones and twigs. There was an air of joyful chatter as they worked relentlessly in the cool environment of the scenic beauty.

Everyone enjoyed Faheema’s efforts to keep away the cows providing them to work uninterrupted.

Afterwards the different exhibits were judged by Farhana Azim, who pointed out and appreciated different techniques that were incorporated by each group. The good use of the local flora and fauna, it made all the more difficult to judge these exhibits. Every group had displayed their talent and done a great job though Ghazala’s and Asma’s group were a step ahead of the others.

It was a trip enjoyed by all as the weather did justice to the venue that was a

befitting background for the creative work that was produced so willingly.

The Research Society of International Law (RSIL) organised a workshop in Lahore on Saturday, to discuss and deliberate on how without extensive legislative changes, administrative measures can be taken to make the existing legal system more vibrant and result oriented, says a press release.

Several experts participated in the deliberations, Salman Chaudhry AIG Security and Vigilance Police stated that the investigators are not provided with sufficient resources to fulfil their duties. “The newly established forensics lab if allowed to coordinate with the police set-up can be productive from investigation point of view,” he added.

Waqas Kadeer Dar from Advocate General’s Office commented that the police diaries are authored by unauthorised persons.

Imran Ahmed Malik Advocate Supreme Court reaffirmed that due to such flawed police documentation, the suspects are bailed out by the courts.

Justice (r) Waqar Mir while participating in the discussions stated that the traditional and vernacular offence are to be distinguished from offences that are carried out in a larger political and global context.

Haider Rasool Mirza Advocate High Court stated that the forensic facility should be administered by any suitable authority other than the police so that it gives fair assessment and results and is free from any pro prosecution bias.

Earlier, Jamal Aziz, Research Associate RSIL, gave a detailed presentation in which he highlighted several specific measures which could be introduced to issue guidelines and administrative orders without making legislative changes that could make the existing prosecution more effective.

Oves Anwar, Research Associate RSIL, gave a presentation of legal responses to 9/11 by various common law jurisdictions including Canada, UK, Australia and USA and highlighted that how responsible nations promptly take immediate and legislative measures to prevent future acts of terror from happening whereas, by comparison in Pakistan the response has been lukewarm and almost nonexistent and the commitment is lacking in upgrading legal tools to counter the waves of terrorist attacks over the last few years.

Amina Warsi, Research Fellow RSIL, and Ayesha Warsi Research Fellow RSIL, were of the view that guidelines can be issued under the existing laws and in this regard the policy makers may consider the CrPC and police order etc.

Ahmer Bilal Soofi President RSIL stated that the initiative taken by RSIL team is commendable and such ideas should be well received by the policy makers and also by the Provincial Governments, because after the 18th Amendment, law and order has become a provincial issue. The provinces are now free to bring provincial amendments in the Criminal Procedure Code and other appropriate laws.

Justice (r) Mazoor Hussain Sial being the chief guest concluded the debate by appreciating the RSIL debate on the issue at hand and stated that a focused thinking on such national issues is highly desirable given the challenges to the state of Pakistan. He further appreciated RSIL, as being the only think tank of International Law in Pakistan. He further encouraged the RSIL team to pursue in academic endeavours on national issues on various academic aspects of International Law.

Participants of the workshop were of the view that it will be miscarriage of justice if an innocent is found guilty and if factually guilty is allowed to be acquitted.

It was accordingly decided that the suggestions in the experts’ workshop should be passed on to the policy maker.

Islamabad

The Floral Art Society of Pakistan (FAS), Islamabad Chapter, held its monthly general body meeting at the Serena Hotel which included a workshop on ‘Crafts in Floral Artistry.’

The event was fairly well attended by enthusiastic members while the workshop was conducted by Salma Ansari, a member of FAS Karachi chapter, who had flown in especially for the occasion.

Materials for the workshop were provided and the members were divided into groups for this ‘hands on’ experience. Materials included stuff like a twine sphere; match sticks; muslin to drape for a background; stencils and other items — Salma said she likes to think ‘out of the box’ and create arrangements from commonly found items rather than go in for expensive ones which everyone cannot afford. “We can find many things around the house if we look with a discerning eye and try and picture the end result of the arrangement we are about to create,” she said and went on to demonstrate her ability to do so. The ladies appreciated her lesson and tried their hand at their own creations — some doing better than others but everyone having a good learning experience that will improve their skill for floral artistry.

It was interesting to hear when an accomplished member, Musarrat Zain told of how Salma used to be her pupil while learning the art of flower arrangement but now the roles had been reversed and she was the one who was learning new techniques from her former pupil! It goes to show that in this art form you can learn and adopt ideas that are different from anyone who has the talent and expertise.

In conclusion, Salma was thanked for her effort and presented a token of appreciation and members enjoyed refreshments and exchanged notes about the different aspects of their hobby.

Green exercise
boosts mental health

ISLAMABAD
APP

Just a few minutes of exercise a day in a park can improve your mental health.
Green exercise is an activity in the presence of nature. It leads to positive short and long-term health outcomes. Many studies have shown that outdoor exercise can reduce the risk of mental illness and improve overall well-being, Health News reported. In an analysis to determine the dose of green exercise that is needed to improve mental health, researchers did a meta-analysis of 10 studies that studied the effect of different types of green exercise on a variety of populations.
This multi-study analysis assessed the best regime of dose(s) of acute exposure to green exercise required to improve self-esteem and mood. The research used meta-analysis methodology to analyse 10 UK studies involving 1,252 participants of different ages, genders and studied their mental health status.
The researchers analysed activities such as walking, gardening, cycling, fishing, boating, horse riding and farming along with assessing the participants’ exercise intensity and exposure duration. It was found that exercising in a green environment improved both self-esteem and mood of the participants. The presence of water generated greater effects. Both men and women had similar improvements in self-esteem after green exercise, though men showed a difference for mood. The greatest health changes occurred in the young and the mentally ill, although people of all ages and social groups benefited.
The largest positive effect on self-esteem came from a five-minute dose of green exercise. All natural environments were found to be beneficial, including parks in towns or cities.
The above findings confirm that the environment plays an important role in improving overall health of people.

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: An awareness seminar on danger, causes and fight against thalassaemia was held on Tuesday in the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), in collaboration with Thalassaemia Awareness and Prevention in Pakistan (TAPP).

Speaking at the seminar, TAPP President Ayesha Abid told a big gathering of male and female students that “choice is yours! Either get yourself tested for thalassaemia carrier status before you tie the knot or suffer the regrets, psychological stresses, financial burdens, life-long trauma, costly medications and other enormous challenges. Therefore, every one of you needs to get yourself tested before it tests you”.

She also briefed the students and other participants about the kinds of thalassaemia and informed them that more than 10 million people had thalassaemia minor, but the danger arose when two thalassaemia minor carriers got married. Therefore, it was the responsibility of institutions, teachers, parents and media to create awareness against such marriages because all those children who suffered from thalassaemia needed blood transfusion from the very young age of three months and it continues with them for the rest of their lives.

Samiul Haq, father of Nimar Sami, suggested the students should have themselves tested and ascertain what precautions needed to be adopted by them if any one of them was a carrier of thalassaemia. NUML Rector Major Gen (r) Masood Hassan, while speaking on the occasion, appreciated the efforts of the TAPP for such a humanitarian cause.

The seminar was also attended by NUML Director General Brig Azam Jamal, Dr Amina Aziz and students.

While addressing the participants Senator Talah Mehmood said that education is key to success and there is a need to pay full attention towards the education and to make strong policy for it.

He said media is paying very important role and contributing a lot to spread education among the general public. “Media is highlighting the social issues that’s why concerned authorities are also paying attention to solve these issues first,” he said and added, “now we are talking about the implementation of Article 25-A and this credit also goes to media.”

He appreciated the role of RIUJ and ITA for organising workshop for working journalists.

A workshop titled ‘Empowering Women: Legislation under Human Rights’ was organised at the Resource Centre Murree (RCM) on Tuesday.

The Fatima Jinnah Women University’s Women Research Resource Centre organised the workshop in collaboration with the Human Rights and Minorities Affairs Department of the Punjab Government.

It was the first seminar at the RCM, after its formal inauguration by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on December 30. FJWU has been involved in the RCM since the project was launched. Barrister Qasim Ali Chowhan and Dr Farah Qadir, in-charge of the Department of Behavioural Sciences at FJWU, were the resource persons while FJWU Vice Chancellor Dr. Samina Amin Qadir was the chief guest.

Chowhan conducted awareness-raising session by translating the legislation about the rights of women that may be exercised for their empowerment at workplaces. He linked the human rights today with the religion and stated that Almighty Allah has granted protection. He explained all rights with reference to religion as he gave the example of ‘Khutba Hajjat ul Wida’. All rights that CEDAW has ratified today were granted by Islam 1,400 years ago. All policy bills related to human rights explain the same.

Talking about harassment of women, he said that it is an issue that complainants hesitate to discuss. He said that our socio-cultural patterns of interaction encourage silence on these issues and other similar issues like inheritance, right to vote, marriage, divorce etc.

Dr. Farah Qadir discussed possible interventions for women’s empowerment. She gave real life examples to illustrate the phenomena and then distributed the post-study forms to evaluate that to what extent participants have absorbed the session.

LAHORE

RAPID growth of the dairy sector in Pakistan has necessitated training to professionals in improving reproductive management in the sector as training will help professionals to become more efficient.

Prof Dr Richard Pursley, a dairy reproduction scientist at Michigan State University, USA, expressed these views while speaking through video link at a consultative workshop “New approaches of estrus synchronisation to enhance fertility in dairy animals” held at University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) on Saturday. Dr Pursley who also discovered ‘Ovsynch’ protocol in lactating dairy cows stated that it was being improved through addition of fertility programmes.

UVAS Dean Faculty of Veterinary Sciences Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad explained that the poor reproductive efficiency due to delayed puberty and longer calving interval was causing major economical losses.

He stressed the need for awareness on estrus synchronisation to enhance fertility to make dairy farming more profitable.

UVAS Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha encouraged other faculty to follow the same in other areas of animal and veterinary sciences to enhance productivity.

Meanwhile the Institute of Biochemistry & Biotechnology (IBBT), UVAS, is going to organize a two-day conference on “Nanotechnology-Its application in Animal Production and Health” at conference hall from 16-17 April 14.

LAHORE – An NGO Individual Land in collaboration with Foundation of Open Society Institute organised a workshop on ‘Sensitising Media on Torture’ at a local hotel here on Saturday.
The only speaker Mr. Wajahat Masood, a veteran journalist and intellectual, stressed upon sensitising the Pakistani press about reporting regarding torture cases. He said torture, which is made within the parameters of the law in connection with any criminal case, was itself a punishment for the accused and inexcusable in a civilised society.
Leading journalist and human rights activist Wajahat Masood opened up the discussion by first defining torture and its different forms prevalent in the society.
“Torture is intentional and official and it involves suffering, pain and misery to extract some information or evidence,” he said, adding that violence was different from torture as it involved a broader scope and may or may not involve state.
He said that Pakistan was a signatory of the United Nations Convention Against Torture which had become acceptable as customary international law.
Mr. Wajahat, however, said that we should also adopt the modern standards and norms if we accept the modern technology and tools of progress. He further said that the press should avoid reinforcing torture by responsible reporting and not using the words and sentences like “raped girl was young, Hathora Group, Pathar Group, Bori Band Laash and etc”.
According to him, these words carry the same meanings, which are equal to launching baton charge on the victims. He further said that the sections and ethnic groups of society like Christians, Sunni, Shiite and others should be called or pronounced in society and public meetings with the same names, which they like to be caleed. “We should avoid spreading hatred in our society,” he concluded.
