LAHORE: A transformer exploded in Khanpur on Sunday, killing 13 people and injuring several others, DawnNews reported.
RAHIM YAR KHAN: An explosion took place during a Chehlum procession in the Khanpur area of Rahim Yar Khan on Sunday, reported Express News.
Express News correspondent reported that at least 11 people were killed in the explosion. The injured are around a dozen in number and have been shifted to a hospital.
He also said that there were around 150 people gathered at the procession outside Darbar Hussain. At least 3-4 people are critically injured.
District Police Officer Sohail Zafar, after inspecting the site, that it can be speculated it was a bomb blast.
RPO Bahawalpur Syed Abid Qadri, however, denied media reports and said that the incident took place when a transformer exploded. “It was not an incident of terrorism,” he told Express News.
Qadri said that the alam (flag) that was being held at the procession was very long and it got stuck in power lines causing the transformer to explode.
He added that at least 7-8 people were injured, some people received minor injuries.
“Rescue teams are on their way,” he said.
The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain is being observed all over the country today (Sunday).
Inspector General of Punjab Police Javed Iqbal had earlier issued directions to revise security arrangements for the Chehlum processions, while the provincial health department had declared an emergency for government hospitals across the province. tribune

RAHIM YAR KHAN: At least thirteen people have been killed in an explosion in Khanpur.
The explosion took place during the Chelum procession of Hazarat Imam Hussain near an Imambargah.
Initially the reason given by authorities was that a transformer had exploded, but now the possibility of a bomb blast is not being ruled out.
According to the DPO initial investigations indicated that the reason might have been a bomb explosion.
The deceased and injured have been rushed to hospitals.
According to sources, an Alam hit a transformer during a procession, which resulted in the breakage of an electric wire.
RPO, Bahawalpur, Abid Qadri said that the Chehlum procession of Imam Hussain was on its way to the Imam Bargah when the Alam hit the high tension lines, which caused the burst and some 13 people died and at least 30 were wounded in the accident.

Ten mourners were died of electrocution and 15 were injured when alam (flag) carried by mourners observing Chehlum of the martyrs of Karabala hit a power transformer in Khanpur, District Rahim Yar Khan, police and witnesses said Sunday.
According to initial reports, the bomb blast took place in an electricity transformer near City Police Station in Khanpur, leaving ten persons killed and many injured. However, the media reports said that the people were died of electrocution.
According to concerned DPO Shahid Zafar the blast was caused by explosion of a power transformer hit by an alam (flag carried by mourners) and the people were injured by electric shock.
The rescue teams rushed to the scene and started to move the dead bodies and injured to hospitals while the security men cordoned off the area.
According to RPO Bahawalpur Abid Qadri, the blast occurred when electric transformer blasted during the Chehlum procession of Hazrat Imama Hussain when Alam (flag) striked/collided with high tension lines near Darbar-e-Hussaini in Kanpur.
The police have yet not confirmed the casualties while the RPO Bahawalpur Abid Qadri has said that the blast was not an act of terrorism.
