KARACHI – Solar-powered streetlights would first be installed along the Shahrah-e-Faisal and the Shahrah-e-Quaideen and then in the rest of the city, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said on Monday.
The administrator was speaking with a delegation of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) that included the power utility’s conservation director energy Asif Hussain Siddiqui, deputy general manager Abdul Fawad and Shayan Shah.
Accompanying the administrator from the KMC’s side were Works and Services Director General Altaf G Memon, Solid Waste Management Director Tariq Javed and other officials.
The administrator said the use of solar energy would gradually be increased and besides the roads, parks and playgrounds would also be provided with solar-powered lights.

He said the experiment had gained huge success in the whole world and many big cities of the world are now using solar energy to light up main roads and other places.
“Solar-powered streetlights would be installed from Bilawal Chowrangi to Bagh Ibne Qasim this month. The Bagh Ibne Qasim and Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Park and other parks would also gradually have solar-power lights,” he added.
He asked the KESC officials to conduct a technical audit of the usage of electricity at the Civic Center in the first phase so that the exact consumption of electricity could be ascertained and any wastage could be stopped.
The KESC officials assured him that the technical audit would be concluded within 15 days.
The administrator also directed KMC officers to ensure energy conservation by allowing only necessary usage of electricity.
