Dawn Media Group spelling bee contest Over 500 students take part

HYDERABAD, More than 500 students took part in the Dawn Media Group spelling bee contest, seventh in a row since 2005, held in the Mumtaz Mirza auditorium of the Sindh museum on Saturday.

The contestants came from Thatta, Jacobabad, Sanghar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Cadet College Petaro, Daharki, Mirpur Mathelo, Khairpur Mirs, Rashidabad, Sukkur, Shahdadpur, Nawabshah, Ranipur, Hyderabad and other cities.

The event was organised in collaboration with the US embassy.

Participating students were divided into the age groups of 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17 years.

The number of teams in each pool of different age groups varied. There were two rounds of the game with each one carrying two questions of five points each. Contestants, in the first round, were given buzzwords to spell correctly within 40 seconds.
In the second round they were supposed to spell words again correctly.

The students spelling both words correctly got five bonus points.

As far as the buzzword is concerned, teams are given a book of vocabulary to prepare themselves while in the second round it depends on their study skills to spell the word using American or British spellings. The teams have to pronounce two words in each round.

The Hyderabad event was supported by the IBA Sukkur. There was a big turnout of students and their parents at the programme.

IBA Director Nisar Siddiqui speaking to the audience described the contest as a step in the right direction, saying that it would help improve the standard of education. He said that it would also help students develop self-confidence.

Dawn Media Group Director Niloufer Patel said that the group had been organising the programme regularly for several years to promote a healthy competition among students.

The second round of the contest will be held in Karachi when six teams, in all, emerging victorious in the Hyderabad contest will meet Karachi round winners on October 15.
