Dr Nizamuddin vice-chancellor of the University of Gujrat to help promote social sciences
Islamabad: Dr. Mohammad Nizamuddin, vice-chancellor of the University of Gujrat and renowned social scientist, has been appointed as chairman of the National Committee for Development of Social Sciences and Humanities.
He was felicitated by many vice-chancellors and National Language Authority Chairman Dr Anwaar Ahmed, Centre for Civic Education Executive Director Zafarullah Khan, and social worker and activist Tahira Abdullah. They hoped that this step would be helpful in improving the state of social sciences in Pakistan.
Professor Mohammad Nizamuddin assumed the charge as vice-chancellor of the University of Gujrat in 2006. He did his PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Masters from the University of Chicago, and BA Honours and Masters in Sociology-Social Work from the University of Karachi.
Immediately after completing PhD, he taught as assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Later, he joined the UN system where he served for 24 years where he held several senior positions in Jordan, Egypt and Ethiopia and as director for the Asia and Pacific region and as director for Technical Policy and Development at the UN Headquarters, New York. He was also associated as faculty member with Columbia University and taught various courses related to social sciences.
Before joining the University of Gujrat, he was serving as HEC foreign faculty professor in the Punjab University’s Department of Sociology.
