KU staffers continue protest
Karachi: A group of employees of the Karachi University (KU) continued their protest on Wednesday even after assurance by the university administration regarding the payment of 50 percent increase in the August 2010 salary with arrears for the month of July 2010 and 50 percent leave encashment.

The protesters stopped KU Point Service (Bus service), causing immense problems to students, especially in Ramazan. Some employees belonging to KU Employees Welfare Association rushed into KU Public Relations Office and misbehaved with Assistant PRO Farheen Zehra, forcing her not to send news that do not go in their favour. These employees had a meeting in the same office.

The university was presenting a deserted look, while not a single employee was observed in any office of the university, even to attend a phone call.

A paucity of funds at the Karachi University (KU) has sparked protest and unrest at the varsity, as hundreds of non-academic staff of the KU has been protesting for the last two days in favour of 50 percent increase in their salaries and Leave Encashment.

The protest was staged by KU Employees Welfare Association and Officers Welfare Association; the leaders of KU Employees Welfare Association during which Kabir Khan, Fareed Siddiqui and Aijaz Beg expressed their views on the occasion.

They were of the view that the university administration had failed to run the administration smoothly. They said that employees would not withdraw from their basic rights like 50 percent increase in salaries and leave encashment. The administration is trying to deprive employees of these fundamental financial rights, while the protest will be continued until KU accedes to the demand of 50 percent increase and leave encashment to its employees, they said.

It is pertinent to mention here that just after the protest of KU employees, KU Registrar Prof Dr Kaleem Raza Khan has already announced that the Vice Chancellors of all public universities in consultation with the Chancellor’s secretariat were assured that the funds would be provided to the universities to ensure 50 percent increase in the salary of all university employees in Sindh.

He said, “In the light of this, KU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui is pleased to announce that all Karachi University employees will get 50 percent increase as announced by the Government of Pakistan in their August 2010 Salary with arrears for the month of July 2010.

It is to be noted here that Karachi University, grants maximum facilities to its employees and even in the present tough financial conditions, the Standing Committee has recommended to pay 50 percent leave encashment to employees from BPS-1 to BPS-16 and the remaining 50 percent will be paid later.”

Employees Reject Proposal
The leaders of KU Employees Welfare Association have rejected the Standing Committee recommendation to pay 50 percent leave encashment to employees of BPS-1 to BPS-16 and later payment of the remaining 50 percent later. They resolved that protest would continue.

President KU Employees Welfare Association Kabir Khan said that the protest will continue, while work will also be kept suspended. He said, “We need hundred percent leave encashment; deduction will not be accepted at any cost.”

To a question, he said that the KU administration had taken the decision on the pressure of Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) because teachers also need 50 percent increase in their salaries.

It may be last leave encashment
It has been learnt that Karachi University is going to end the benefit of leave encashment to employees from BPS-1 to BPS-16 by next year because financial constraints do not allow KU to bear such type of expenditure. However, Karachi University is the only public university in the country that pays leave encashment to its employees. The KU administration may put the issue of elimination of leave encashment in the coming meetings of syndicate. The nation
