LAHORE  - Lahore University of Management Sciences Model United Nation, the biggest in the country, began on Monday.
Over 800 delegates from all over the world including Pakistan, India, Canada and Qatar flew in to attend the 8th edition of the pioneer, trendsetting MUN conference of Pakistan. The registration went smoothly enough for the opening ceremony to begin on time.

A grand affair in all respects, the ceremony had its chief guest in Jehangir Qazi, who served as the Pakistani ambassador in USA, India, China, and Russia. Currently a part of the committee that is investigating the May 2, 2011 incident of Osama Bin Laden’s assassination, Qazi was also a special representative for UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. Also gracing the event was LUMS vice chancellor, Rector Syed Babar Ali and the patron of LUMUN, Shahryar Khan. LUMUN Anum Mustafa said, “People might take part in Model UN to understand the workings of the United Nations or to win at a conference, but the reason why Model UNs are a great learning experience is because they force varied individuals with opposing stances to sit in one room and work together towards a single solution.”
Once the Secretary General of LUMUN 2012, Amna Abbas, declared the five-day conference open, the delegates moved towards the Global Village to set up there stalls and prepare for their performances. A fabulously entertaining glimpse into the world culture, the Global Village saw all the delegations showcase their respective country’s culture through performances, food, and stalls.
Overall, the first day ended up as a truly great beginning to the conference. Tomorrow, the delegates finally move into the committees to discuss their respective topics. Let the MUNing begin; watch this space for updates on the second day of the conference. pakistantoday
