KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly (SA) unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday, demanding the government to set up campuses of the University of Karachi (KU) in at least two other districts of the province. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) lawmaker Syed Ahmed Ali Shah moved the resolution. He had mentioned words ‘rural districts’ of Sindh in his original draft of the resolution. However, later they replaced by ‘Naushehro Feroze and Tharparkar’ districts after a suggestion from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders, Syed Sardar Ahmed and Dr Sagheer Ahmed. The MQM leaders were of the view that mentioning words ‘rural districts’ could give an impression of province’s division on rural and urban lines. Therefore, they suggested for the specification of the names of two districts. Besides the mover, the PPP members, Nawab Taimur Talpur, Dr Sattar Rajpar, Imdad Pitafi, Humera Alwani, and Syed Bachal Shah spoke in favour of the resolution. They were of the opinion that establishing campuses of the University of Karachi was necessary as there were campuses of some federal institutions working in different districts of Sindh like Allama Iqbal Open University. staff report
