LAHORE, Feb 21: The Muttahida Mahaz-i-Asatza, Punjab, has decided to launch a protest campaign to press the government for the acceptance of their demands, including time-scale promotion from March 3.

MMA’s Punjab Chairman Hafiz Abdul Nasir said the teachers community would go for academic boycott and hold a protest rally from Nasser Bagh to the Civil Secretariat if demands were not met.

He said different teacher organisations had also joined hands with the MMA for launching the protest campaign.

ADDITIONAL CHARGE: The Punjab governor/chancellor has given additional charge of University of Agriculture Faisalabad vice-chancellor’s office to incumbent VC Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan till further orders.

A formal notification by the Punjab government is expected shortly.

The four-year tenure of Prof Khan as UAF vice-chancellor will expire on Feb 27.

The Punjab government has already advertised the coveted slot and the last date for submitting application is Feb 28. The search committee will shortlist and interview candidates and select top three of them. A panel of three candidates will be sent to the chief minister for final approval.

New dean: The governor, who is also chancellor of the Punjab University, has appointed Prof Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal Jadoon as dean of faculty of economics and management sciences for a period of three years on the recommendation of the chief minister.

Prof Jadoon was on the top in order of merit in the panel of three professors submitted by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran.

He has been director of the Institute of Administrative Sciences for 10 years and founding dean of the faculty of economics and management sciences from Dec 20, 2005, to Dec 30, 2008.

He has a vast teaching and research experience in Pakistan and abroad. He is currently holding honorary professorship at Stirling Management School, University of Stirling, Scotland, United Kingdom. He is member of various HEC’s bodies including National Business Education Accreditation Council, Committee for Development of Social Sciences and Chairman of National Curriculum Committee for Management/Public Administration.

CEREMONY: Punjab University Punjabi Adabi Majlis, Department of Punjabi, on Tuesday celebrated the International Mother Language Day and organised a ceremony titled “Jagat Maa Boli Dehar” at Sherani Hall on Old Campus.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjabi Department Chairman Prof Dr Asmatullah Zahid said Punjabi language was not being spoken only in this region, it was second language in some Canadian cities.

Dr Anjum Rehmani, Dr Akhtar, Dr Moeen, Nabeela Rehman and Dr Shahid also spoke.

BOOK FAIR: The Allama Iqbal Medical College on Tuesday organised a three-day book fair at the college library. Leading book sellers from all over the country have set up their stalls at the fair.

Fatima Jinnah Medial College principal Prof Dr Rakhshanda Rehman and columnist Attaul Haq Qasmi inaugurated the book fair. AIMC principal Prof Dr Javed Akram was also present.

SCHOLARSHIPS: The USAID Teacher Education Project (Pre-STEP) has awarded scholarships to students of B.Ed (Honours) Elementary at the Institute of Education and Research, Punjab University.

Scholarships worth Rs300,000 were distributed to top 15 students of the third semester of B.Ed Honours (Elementary) at the IER.

PROTEST: The Punjab Paramedical Alliance will hold a demonstration against non-implementation of service structure for paramedical staff of BPS-1 to 4 and Health Professional Allowance for paramedics at Nasser Bagh on Wednesday (today) at 3pm.

RESULTS: The PU examinations department on Tuesday declared the results of M.Phil leading to PhD in statistics, (semester system), sessions 2008 and 2009.
