Dept inaugurated at Bannu varsity
Lakki Marwat: The Islamic Studies and Research Department has been inaugurated at the University of Science and Technology, Bannu.

The university’s founding Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Asmatullah Khan opened the department at a ceremony held on the premises of the university. Registrar Abdullah Khan and deans of faculties Dr Muhammad Ayub and Dr Saeed Ahmad were among those who attended the event.

Dr Asmatullah said the university was providing quality education and research facilities to the youth of southern districts and adjacent tribal areas. He said the Islamic Studies and Research department would help provide research-based religious education to the students and produce qualified scholars to promote tolerance and interfaith harmony among various communities.

He said MPhil evening programme of Islamic Studies would be launched from October this year. “It will provide an opportunity to the in-service and working teachers to avail the facility,” he added. The news

AIOU emerges as largest public university
Islamabad, July 26: The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has emerged as the largest public university with 665,000 students enrolled from across the country. Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Nazir Sangi told APP on Sunday said that AIOU is providing education to a record number of 665,000 students in 1,200 disciplines from Matriculation to PhD.He said all out efforts are being made to make the AIOU as one of the best universaties in the world. Leading educational experts would be invited soon to revise the existing syllabus to meet the future challenges, he added.

The vice chancellor said a comprehensive programme for training of 30,000 tutors had also been evolved under which all the faculty members would be imparted extensive training on various modern teaching techniques being practised in foreign universities of developed countries.

He said that under a phased programme, AIOU has started imparting quality education to the students through video conferences across the country.

“In addition to books, other printed literature and material, we have also adopted modern technology of video conferencing for teaching students of all faculties throughout the country, besides organising international, national and regional workshops and symposia for the exchange of educational experiences and expertise of the various faculties”.

Dr. Nazir said during the first phase, AIOU has so far purchased 10 modern video conference sets, which are now being used by experts and leading educationists at all the local big AIOU campuses as well as abroad.

He said under the exchange programme, the international experts of different leading universities also deliver a series of lectures to AIOU students through video conferences.

Dr. Nazir said under the second phase of an ambitious master plan, AIOU would soon introduce 150 new technical courses in collaboration with the Pakistan Engineering Council, to produce the properly trained and skilled manpower in all trades needed in industrial, construction and agriculture sectors.

He said the co-operation of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers and Commerce and Industries and all its affiliated chambers would also be sought to finalise the technical courses keeping in view the demand of different sectors.

Dr. Nazir said that Vice President, SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Pakistan Chapter and veteran business leader Iftikhar Ali Malik has assured him of full support, even at the SAARC level.

He has expressed satisfaction on the overall performance of the Regional Director, AIOU, Lahore, Mian Muhammad Aslam while the output of all other regions is also being monitored.

He said the AIOU dispatches about 24 million books costing Rs. 350 million, to its students during each semester.

Now the AIOU has also reduced the period for provision of books from seven months to 45 days after granting admission, he added. App

‘Jinnah Medical College duly recognised’
Peshawar: The management of the Jinnah Medical College, Peshawar, has said their college had been duly recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) after inspection.

Clarifying a news item, a press statement stated that the college had improved its standard and availed affiliation from the Khyber Medical University.

An official of the university, however, said that permanent affiliation has not been granted to the college yet. The official said on the condition of anonymity that the college had some major deficiencies, which was why the university had given it conditional affiliation for a six-month period. Permanent affiliation would be granted to it once it overcame the shortfalls, he added.

The statement said that the college was also registered with the Higher Education Regulatory Authority (HERA).

The statement added that Jinnah Medical College was the only private medical college in the provincial metropolis, which was attached to public sector hospital for clinical training of its students. The college has acquired the facility from the provincial government at a high cost to facilitate its students for training at the District Headquarters Hospital in Charsadda, the statement said.

On the other hand, sources said that the college had acquired temporary attachment with the DHQ Hospital in Charsadda. The college management had made the commitment with PMDC that it would develop a full-fledged hospital of its own, but no signs of the hospital could be seen despite a lapse of more than one-and-a-half year since its recognition in January 2009, the sources said.

The statement claimed that the college was growing day by day and its management was going on smoothly but a few disgruntled elements had been trying to defame the college since long by writing to the various institutions for their vested interest. Two-year age relaxation for NIP approved
Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Youth Affairs in a recent meeting approved two years age relaxation for the youth for National Internship Programme (NIP).

The committee met here at the Parliament House to get a briefing on the National Internship Programme (NIP), Youth Exchange Programmes and others youth related issues.

Now the youth with age 28 will be able to participate in the NIP. The committee also approved the proposal of NIP for two-year duration.

It also directed the Ministry of Youth Affairs to ensure transparency in the International Youth Exchange Programme.

The committee further directed the ministry to utilise the available youth data in the upcoming youth exchange programme. The committee said that it is essential to provide equal opportunities to the youth.
