ALLAMA Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) has won Urdu debating competition and got runners up trophy in the overall All Punjab Medical Intercollegiate Debating Competition, 2012 held in CMH Medical College here on Wednesday. A press release here said famous poet Zahid Fakhri and CMH Medical College Principal Lt Gen (Retd) Afzaal Ahmad were the chief guests at the debating competition in which 17 teams from all over Punjab participated.

Neonatal screening at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore

ALLAMA Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) on Friday announced the launch of neonatal screening against inborn complications of metabolism and congenital disorders in infants born at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

The announcement was made at a special ceremony held in this regard.

Special Assistant for Health to Punjab Chief Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique was the chief guest on the occasion while the guests of honour included Justice (retd) Nasira Javed Iqbal and Patient Welfare Association, Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, Chairman Mian Mehboob Iqbal. AIMC/Jinnah Hospital Principal Prof Javed Akram, senior faculty members, staff members of the twin institutions and a large number of people attended the ceremony. Khawaja Salman Rafique said the inauguration of neonatal screening for congenital and inborn complications was a noble deed and a step in the right direction.

Prof Javed Akram said AIMC and Jinnah Hospital were the first public sector institutions to take the audacious steps for starting screening of infants with a view to reduce the burden of disease in the community. According to him, detection and treatment of inborn complications of metabolism and some congenital diseases through neonatal screening will reduce mental and physical retardation and thus allay the pain and misery of the community in general and of the individuals in particular.

“The process started in Jinnah Hospital today will snowball into public pressure on other public sector institutions to start similar projects”, he added. He also urged the government to introduce legislation calling for all private sector health institutions to implement newborn screening for treatable disorders compulsorily since such institutions were already charging heavy fees for birth related procedures.

LAHORE – Computer literacy is of vital importance in today’s education system, said PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz while addressing students at the laptop distribution ceremony held at Allama Iqbal Medical College on Wednesday.

“Knowledge and information are a guarantee to success in all sectors of life and the PML-N government is committed to safeguard the interests of the present and future generations”, Maryam Nawaz said, adding, that ensuring a prosperous future for the youth was the vision of PML-N.

The PML-N leader said that 125thousand laptops had been given to the students throughout Punjab on merit basis and it was her desire that every student around the country would have access to information technology in the same manner. She further said that women had an equally important role to play, to bring prosperity to the country, saying : “The Punjab government is investing in women’s education, establishment of new women universities and introduction of special packages for the women is proof of my party’s commitment to women’s empowerment.”

Maryam Nawaz said that a bright and safe future was in sight and no power could stop Pakistan from proving itself as a dignified, sovereign and prosperous country.

As many as 61 postgraduate research scholars of UHS were given laptops at the ceremony. Students sang national songs and a Guard of Honour was also presented by the Punjab Police.

PML-N Senator Pervaiz Rashid has said the PML-N is striving for the stability of the country.

He said promotion of national solidarity was at the top of the agenda of PML-N rather than division of the country on linguistic, regional and party basis.

He expressed these views while addressing a laptop distribution ceremony among the students of Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) on Saturday. Senator Pervaiz Rashid, who is also spokesman for Punjab government, said the PML-N had resolved that exploitation of youth would not be allowed for political purposes. He said only national flag, not the party flag, would be given in their hands.

MNA Khawaja Saad Rafique while addressing the function said that students should not be misled by catchy slogans and rosy promises. He said Pakistan would be taken to the heights of progress and the estranged Baloch brethrens would also be brought into national mainstream.

Earlier, AIMC Principal Prof Javed Akram said IT Students Society had been set up in the college and e-scholar would be announced every year while gold medal and a cash prize of Rs 100,000 would be given to the youth. He also announced launch of Microsoft courses in the college.

He said that revolution was an evolutionary process and was brought about by practical efforts and not by mere slogans. He said that dictatorship was not the solution to the problems adding that the judiciary was free and should take action against the anti-state forces. PML-N leader said that Chief Minister strictly followed merit policy and the projects like yellow cab, Aashiyana housing scheme and laptops distribution were its testimony. He said that the estranged Baloch community would also be brought into national mainstream adding that the party was against the establishment of small units only to promote the interests of the feudal.

LAHORE: The Punjab Lok Rahs on Sunday arranged the ‘Punjab Folk Dance Festival’ in collaboration with the Drama Society of the Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC), Lahore, at the college auditorium.

The festival was part of the International Mother Language Day to celebrate the diversity of Punjabi language and richness of its cultural heritage.

Students from different educational institutions across Punjab presented folk dances, including bhangra, jhoomer, malwai giddha, ghoomer, dharees, luddi, kikkli, sammi, gatka, dhammal and julli, which received applause from the audience.

Students from the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), COMSATS, University of Gujrat, University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Forman Christian College (FCC), The University of Punjab, School of International Studies in Sciences and Arts, Bahauddin Zakariya University, The Educators and New Horizon School participated in the dances. Folk dances from other provinces, like Sindhi Jhoomer, Attan and Khatak, were also part of the festival.

Talking to Daily Times, one of the organisers, Adil, said that the dances were produced in a three-month series of workshop organised by the Punjab Lok Rahs. He said that the organisation had engaged many dance teachers and experts from both classical and folk backgrounds in the process, including Beena Jawad, Nighat Chaodhry, Arif Panwar and Zahoor Hussain. “The festival also includes dance performances by traditional dancers of Punjab. The performances include jhoomer of Ravi, jhoomer of Chenab, jhoomer of Jhang and gatka, also called dandia,” he said.

The Punjab Lok Rahs kicked off the event with its first phase on February 21, by rotating the festival at four venues of Lahore; School of International Studies in Sciences and Arts (SISA), National College of Arts (NCA), Bagh-e-Jinnah and Liberty Market.

MoU signed Allama Iqbal Medical College/Jinnah Hospital and Hamza Foundation for special people healthcare

THE administration of Allama Iqbal Medical College/Jinnah Hospital and Hamza Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for provision of healthcare to special people, on Monday.

Principal AIMC/JHL Prof Javed Akram, Chairman Hamza Foundation Sheikh Abid Hussain, senior consultants and healthcare administrators of the twin institutions, members of the administration of Hamza Foundation, CEO of an NGO, Todd Shane, which run many free clinics in the country and others attended the moot.

Prof Javed Akram praised the efforts of Sheikh Abid Hussain and Hamza Foundation for looking after the healthcare of special people. He said as per the MoU, AIMC/Jinnah Hospital, Lahore would provide free imported medicines to the foundation regularly including free radiological and laboratory diagnostic tests, cochlear device implantation on deaf patients and training for speech therapists and audiologists at the foundation.

Sheikh Abid Hussain said he was grateful for this. He said the foundation was running an institute for deaf and dumb in order to make them useful members of the community. The foundation was also operating seven clinics throughout the City on self help basis.

MoU signed for treatment of the poor
LAHORE, Feb 20: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday between Allama Iqbal Medical College/Jinnah Hospital and Hamza Foundation, Lahore, to extend cooperation for the treatment of poor and needy patients.

According to a press release, the MoU was signed by AIMC Principal Prof Dr Javed Akram and Hamza Foundation Chairman Sheikh Abid Husain in a ceremony held at the conference room of the hospital which was attended by senior consultants and healthcare administrators.

Mr Todd Shane, CEO of Shine Humanity, an NGO which operates various free clinics in the country, also joined the ceremony.

Prof Akram said Jinnah Hospital would contribute its share to the activities of Hamza Foundation by providing a healthy stock of free imported essential medicines on a regular monthly basis. He also offered to provide the facilities of sophisticated radiological and laboratory diagnostic tests free of cost for patients visiting the clinics and other healthcare facilities operating under the banner of the Hamza Foundation.

He said cochlea device implantation on deaf patients referred by the foundation would also be undertaken at Jinnah Hospital while training for speech therapists and audiologists working at Hamza Foundation would be offered.

Prof Javed Akram said Professor of ENT Rashid Zia offered his free services for this endeavour.

Similarly, he said, endocrinologist Dr Ali Jawa of Jinnah Hospital also offered his services for screening of patients being treated at the institutions under the auspices of the foundation.

On the occasion, Sheikh Abid expressed his profound gratitude for the cooperation by principal and staff of Jinnah Hospital.

He informed the participants that the foundation was running an institution for deaf and dumb and seven healthcare clinics throughout the city on self-help basis. Dawn

It took Sahiwal Medical College about two years to get registered with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). Now it has run into another problem: there’s a shortage of cadavers and bones.
There are only two cadavers for 200 students. A hundred students each are enrolled in MBBS Part I and II. The first batch of students, who have now been promoted to the second year, kept complaining about this last year. They were assured that the problem would be solved once the college got registered with the PMDC, said a student who wanted to remain anonymous.
“In an anatomy class you can’t proceed without a cadaver. With about a hundred students standing around a table, it is very difficult to see how to do dissections,” the female students said. She added that the college also had an inadequate stock of bones, “Teachers have told us to rent bone packs on our own from King Edward Medical University (KEMU) and Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) in Lahore, she said, “but it’s very difficult to do that.”
“Teaching standards and availability of necessary apparatus should not be compromised because the college is newly-established,” said another student. He said that the government should ensure that the college gets the cadavers it needs, he added.
An anatomy professor at the KEMC said that the college allows a maximum of 40 students per cadaver. Ideally, a Sahiwal Medical College teacher said, there should be 15-20 students per cadaver.
Recently, residents of a village near Sahiwal captured a boy from a graveyard. The boy turned out to be an MBBS student who was hoping to get his hands on some bones from old graves. “The villagers let the boy go after he showed his student identity card,” an official of the college told The Express Tribune.
The Sahiwal Medical College principal Professor Dr Zameer Ahmad told The Tribune that arranging for bones and cadavers wasn’t the responsibility of the college. “We don’t have a provided mortuary here,” he said, adding that the college hoped to address the situation soon.
An official of the Khawaja Safdar Medical College, Sialkot said that shortage of cadavers and bone packs was something all new medical colleges were facing.
When contacted, a Health Department official said that the college was facing the problems because it was new. “We will write to the deputy commissioner to issue a circular to the police stations concerned that unclaimed bodies in the district be handed over to the college. “The college principal should ensure that students have the necessary tools for learning,” said Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Regsitrar Dr Ahmad Nadeem Akbar.

LAHORE, Feb 9: The Punjab government has reconstituted boards of management of three teaching institutions of the city.

The institutions are Allama Iqbal Medical College/Jinnah Hospital, Punjab Institute of Cardiology and Fatima Jinnah Medical College/Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

The BoM of Allama Iqbal Medical College-Jinnah Hospital consists of Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday (retired), Justice Nasira Javed Iqbal (retired), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) former director general Tariq Khosa, AIMC former principal Prof Ejaz Ahsan, chartered accountant Waqar Ahmad Khan and US-based senior Pakistani Dr Nisar Ahmad Chaudhry.

The BoM of Jinnah Hospital had been dysfunctional for the last one and a half years or so.

The Punjab government has notified six-member board of management for the Punjab Institute of Cardiology that consists of former Supreme Court judge Sair Ali, former PIC chief executive Prof Jawad Sajid Khan, businessman Mian Javed Shafi, retired bureaucrat Abdul Rashid, former Ganga Ram Hospital MS Prof Humayoun Maqsood and social activist Pir Saad.

The PIC BoM had been dysfunctional since Dec 31. It was given extension of two weeks on Dec 14 after it remained inactive at least for six months.

Similarly, FJMC/Sir Ganga Ram Hospital BoM consists of Justice Mahmood Akhtar Shahid Siddiqui (retired), Kinnaird College for Women former principal Mira Phailbus, Justice Akhtar Nazir (retired), Shahzad Hussain and Syed Yawar.

The Punjab health department had sent summaries to the Punjab government for reconstitution of BoMs at these teaching institutions.

Health secretary and finance secretary are permanent members of these boards. The newly nominated members shall elect chairmen of these boards.

KEMU King Edward Medical University to have first private diagnostic lab

King Edward Medical University (KEMU) is to develop a new diagnostic laboratory on Jail Road that will become the first lab attached to a public medical school in the province that also works on a private basis, The Express Tribune has learnt.
The university hired a building on Jail Road and has been paying rent since November 16, 2011, said an official privy to developments. He said the lab will open in about two months and the project would cost Rs37 million.
A Health Department official said that this would be a first in the Punjab. “There isn’t any public medical school or university with a lab that also works privately,” he said. He added that the chief minister might have concerns about this as it did not fit in with his ‘Health Vision’, but the university was autonomous and the decision was of its Academic Council.
According to documents available with The Express Tribune, the lab will have an x-ray machine, ultra sound machine and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine, the last a piece of equipment not even available at Mayo Hospital, KEMU’s attached teaching hospital.
“This means that the poor patients at Mayo Hospital will have to go to the lab to get their tests. This is absolutely against the model of free healthcare in the Punjab,” said a senior doctor at Mayo Hospital.
The laboratory will be open to patients from public hospitals from 8am to 2pm, after which it will cater to private patients. This is modelled after the Punjab Institute of Cardiology.
Dr Javed Akram, who is Punjab president of the Medical Teachers Association (MTA) and principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College, said that he hoped the model would be successful, but he had his doubts.
“The poorest of the poor go to public hospitals for treatment. They simply cannot afford to get tests from outside,” he said. However, he added that public hospitals needed funding. “We have to get funds, either from the government, through charity or by doing public-private partnership,” he said.
A senior KEMU faculty member said that rules had been broken in the building rental, as public universities looking to rent a private building were required to advertise a tender and this had not been done.
KEMU Vice Chancellor Dr Asad Aslam Khan denied this. “We advertised the tender and fulfilled all formalities. We even got an NOC [no-objection certificate] from the government to rent a private building for the lab,” he said.
The vice chancellor said that the laboratory was needed as currently 50 to 60 per cent of patients had to be sent to other places for tests.
“Patients admitted in Mayo Hospital will be charged no extra money for the tests. After 2pm we will have a reception and the lab will work as a private business. We will fix our charges at half the market rate,” he said.
Dr Khan said that the lab would also serve as a collection centre, so patients could pick up test results or hand in samples for testing 24 hours a day. He did not give a date for when the lab would open, but said it would be “quite soon”.

LAHORE – Twelve more people including women died of the ‘mysterious’ reaction being produced by a medicine provided to the heart patients by the Punjab Institute of Cardiology raising the total death toll to 26 on Saturday.
More than 150 patients have been admitted at different hospitals of Lahore including Mayo and Jinnah hospitals after reaction from medicines from PIC while the number of affected people and the number of deaths is also increasing sharply.
Meanwhile, the probe committee formed to identify the mysterious disease could not reach any conclusion even after two days.
Committee Head Dr Azhar said the health secretary has been requested to form a team to inspect the manufacturing and packing processes of the concerned medicine factories producing the suspicious medicines.
Most of the patients were admitted to Punjab Institute of Cardiology, after they had consumed blood-thinning medicines and had then developed this mysterious disease. According to sources, the disease has killed more than 26 people, a claim that has been denied by the Punjab Health Department.
A 48-member committee was formed under Lahore Allama Iqbal Medical College Principal Prof Dr Javed Akram for investigating the deaths. According to Dr Afzal Shaheen of Jinnah Hospital, the symptoms of this disease include low count of platelets and white cells along with marks on the body. Some patients also bleed from various parts of their body.
Other members of the committee include PIC Chief Executive Prof Muhammad Azhar, SIMS Principal Prof Faisal Masood, Prof Irshad Hussain, Prof. Farzana Chaudhry, Prof Bashir Ahmad, Prof Farkhanda Kokab, Addl. Secretary Health Technical) Dr. Muhammad Anwar Janjua, Dr. Zahid Pervaiz, Prof. Munazza Qayyum, Mufti Abdul Salam, Prof Nosheen , Dr Mubashir Attique, Prof Tahir Javed, Sheikh Akhtar Hussain and Ayyaz Ali.
Special arrangements have been made for the patients at the hospital.
Khan, while talking to a private TV channel, said that deaths due to medicine reaction were deplorable and strict action will be taken against the responsible. Provincial Health Minister Dr Saeed Elahi said the tragedy happened due to improper storage of medicines. Dr Saeed promised stern action against the people behind this mishap.
Meanwhile, Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khosa had taken notice over death of people due to mysterious disease and sought reports from health department immediately in this regard.
PATIENTS POURING IN: Over 80 more patients of the mysterious disease have reported at different hospitals while five more have died, Mayo Hospital Addition Medical Superintendent Dr Abdul Majeed said on Saturday. “Some 80 patients including 45 in Mayo Hospital and 35 in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital were referred from Punjab Institute of Cardiaoloy (PIC) suspecting dengue fever due to some alleged reaction by administering cardiac medicines which were provided by the PIC store,” he added.

The members were of the opinion that the four-year BSc (Hons) physiotherapy course being offered in eight affiliated institutes must be upgraded to a five-year DPT programme in line with the guidelines issued by the Higher Education Commission.

Currently the course is being offered by the Allama Iqbal Medical College; the Rawalpindi Medical College; the Quaid-i-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur; the School of Allied Health Sciences; the Children’s Hospital; the ACE Institute of Health Sciences, the FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry, Lahore; the Medical and Dental College; and the Armed Forces Postgraduate Medical Institute, Rawalpindi.Dawn.

Medical college admission forms available

Entrance test application forms for admissions to medical and dental colleges will be available from today on Saturday University of health sciences (UHS) vice chancellor Prof Malik Husain Mubashar said. Candidates can get forms free of cost and the last date for submission of application forms will be September 7, 2011. Entrance test examination will be held on September 13 in the 12 major cities of the Punjab province.

Entrance test application Forms will be available at UHS, the King Edward Medical University, Lahore; Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore; Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore; the Services Institute of Medical Sciences, Lahore; de Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore; Rawalpindi Medical College, Rawalpindi; Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad; Nishtar Medical College, Multan; Quaid-e-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur; and Shaikh Zayed Medical College, Bahawalpur.

Entrance test paper would be prepared from a common syllabus prepared by the UHS on the directions of the Punjab government and syllabus was based on common core knowledge, taken from both FSc and non-FSc syllabi and textbooks. “There will be a single paper and all questions will be set in a way that no question will be out of course and textbooks of both FSc and non-FSc schemes of education,” prof Mubashar said.

More than 35,000 candidates were expected to appear in the test this year and all the arrangements for entrance test of medical and dental colleges had been finalized. He said that a total of 22 centres were being established for this purpose three in Lahore, four in Rawalpindi, three in Bahawalpur, three in Gujranwala, two in Faisalabad and one each in Sahiwal, Multan, Gujrat, Sargodha, D.G. Khan, Rahim Yar Khan and Hassan Abdal.

Candidates from Lahore, Sahiwal, Gujrat, Gujranwala and Sargodha must submit their applications at the UHS; those from Multan and D.G. Khan at Nishtar Medical College Multan; those from Rawalpindi and Hassan Abdal at Rawalpindi Medical College Rawalpindi; and those aspiring to appear from Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Faisalabad must submit their applications at Quaid-e-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur, Shaikh Zayed Medical College, Rahim Yar Khan and Punjab Medical College Faisalabad, respectively.

LAHORE:SPEAKERS at a seminar, underlining the importance of practical portion in matriculation and intermediate examinations, rejected any move to eliminate the same from examination system on the pretext of ensuring transparency.

They were speaking at a seminar “Importance of practical in examinations” jointly organised by Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman Memorial Society (Jang Group of Newspapers) and Punjab Group of Colleges at a local hotel on Thursday.

Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore’s Chairman Prof Dr Akram Kashmiri said a number of proposals were under discussion in connection with reviewing practical portion in matriculation and intermediate exams to ensure maximum transparency and improve conduct of exam of this vital component.

He said besides many other proposal there was one to empower school/college heads to award marks of practical exam to candidate or to replace this exam with Alternate to Practicals (ATPs), as followed in O/A level exams. He, however, said all these proposals were under discussion and nothing concrete had emerged so far.

Dr Kashmiri also supported practical exams and said without practical component there was no concept of science. He also quoted examples of Muslim scientists in this regard and highlighted the significance of practical exams. He said the government wanted to ensure maximum transparency in practical, as it was doing for theoretical exams.

BISE Faisalabad Chairman Syed Mumtaz Hussain Shah, who is also Chairman of Punjab Board Committee of Chairmen (PBCC), also said no one could deny the importance of practical in education system, adding teaching also remained ineffective if this component was missing. He said the government wanted to improve practical exams therefore the same was being reviewed in consultation with the stakeholders. “This seminar is also a part of this process”, he said while lauding the initiative of the Jang Group of Newspapers and Punjab Group of Colleges.

Prof Rana Adil from the Superior Group of Colleges said practical portion should not be eliminated, adding research and quality of education were missing from the country’s education system. According to him, this missing link is the difference between developed and developing countries.

Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) Principal Prof Javed Akram said there was a need to improve the existing system of practical exams, adding all kind of biases, including like and dislike should be eliminated from conduct of practical exams. “Any degree without practical evaluation will be thrown into dustbin”, he said while elaborating that world never recognised degrees without practical evaluation of a candidate.

Advocate Nimra Sabahat said there was a need to eliminate all kind of influence, including political influence, during the conduct of practical exams. According to her, the situation can only improve with better arrangements for conduct of exams to discourage any kind of favour to candidates in practical exams.

Rana Muhammad Arshad, Chairman, Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Asataza Punjab warned that any move to empower school heads to award practical marks to candidates would be strongly resented. He said BISEs should depute honest and dedicated staff for conduct of practical exams, adding at present the situation in this regard was quite discouraging.

Fazaia College Lahore’s Principal Naz Gul was of the view that practical exam was significant, as it discouraged rote learning and gave confidence to the students. She also said there was a need to depute honest and committed teachers for conduct of practical exams. “There should be a corruption-free system instead of simply eliminating practical exams”, she added.

Former DPI (Colleges) Punjab Prof Dr Shaukat Ali said teaching of science without practical was like a body without soul. He said foreign examination bodies had introduced ATPs in countries of less credibility, claiming in other countries a proper conduct of practical exams was ensured by these bodies.

Dr Shaukat said spirit behind practical was rapidly vanishing, adding it was also unfortunate that marks of practical had been lowered from 60 to 30 over the years. He also said practical exam should be taken part-wise, as presently it was being conducted at the end of part-II only.

He suggested that Section 144 should also be imposed during the conduct of practical exam as imposed during the conduct of theoretical portion. He also said the marks for practical should be increased to encourage students to develop their interest.

Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) Vice President Rana Liaqat said conduct of practical exam was disheartening at the moment which discouraged brilliant students. He said mafia deputing corrupt officials for exam duties was very strong while demanding the government to take notice of this aspect instead of eliminating practical exams.

Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) President Prof Dr Sibt-ul-Hasnain Syed said our exams were unstructured while examiners also lacked training.
