Bahria University Islamabad Campus held its orientation session for the fresh batch of spring 2012, says a press release. The session was conducted on Thursday and Friday. Around 760 students were inducted in this semester. The students of management sciences, humanities and social sciences were given an orientation on the first day, while the second day was for the students of earth & environmental sciences, law, graduate studies and applied sciences. Commodore (r) Muhammad Anjum Sarfaraz, Director Campus introduced the HODs and the staff to the students. He wished them luck for their academic career in Bahria University.

A female singer sang Hadeeqa Kiyani’s much acclaimed song ‘Bohe Barian’ that stunned the audience. She sang another catchy English number ‘Who’s There’ in which she displayed her dancing skills too.

The magicians grabbed the attention by casting the spell of optical illusions one after another on the audience. Showing tricks with the help of cards, sticks, handkerchiefs, hats, newspapers and empty envelopes the magician entertained the families for quite some time. Children keenly watched the magic show.

Last but not the least, ‘Golden Meditation’ was presented in which girls juggled golden balls on their hand and feet while sitting and standing upside down with such finesse that the audience were truly spellbound.

Chinese acrobats enthrall audience at cultural show

ISLAMABAD: To further cement Pak-China diplomatic relations, the Pakistan Navy in collaboration with Chinese embassy organised a traditional Chinese Art and Cultural Show at Bahria University Auditorium, conducted by Chinese Acrobatic Cultural Troupe from Guangdong Province.

Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Tayyab Ali Dogar was the chief guest on the occasion while Senior Col Zhang Jingen from China Embassy was also present at the event. Both the Pakistani and Chinese officials hailed the long-standing friendship between the two countries.

ISLAMABAD: As many as 793 students were awarded degrees in various disciplines in eighth convocation ceremony of Bahria University at Jinnah Convention Center (JCC) on Saturday. Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Mohammad Asif Sandila presided was the chief guest on the occasion.

The students were awarded 17 gold and 15 silver medals as recognition of their remarkable achievement in their academic programs.

On the occasion, the CNS said being citizens of developing country, they needed to go for a long way to meet international standards of education and to groom their students to understand the diversity of the global environment. However, literates must understand their role as responsible citizens who can participate effectively in formal and informal events of the society, he maintained.

He further said that the varsities created and imparted knowledge, which today supplants land, labour and capital. “Knowledge about research, latest technologies and contribution to these sectors can help Pakistan to move forward,” he said, adding, their reliance on the developed countries for advanced technologies adversely affected economy.

Felicitating the graduating students, the CNS expressed his deep admiration for strenuous hard work put in by to stand successful.

Inter-university sport competitions comprising cricket, badminton, table tennis and football tournaments was declared open at the Islamabad Sports Complex by Ahmad Yahya Khan, director general sports at the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Universities participating in the cricket tournament are Bahria University, International Islamic University, Hamdard University, ISRA University, Preston University Islamabad, Kohat and Lahore, COMWAVE Institute, Northern University and Quaid-i-Azam University.

The universities participating in table tennis and badminton competitions are Women’s Institute of Science and Humanities (WISH), Quaid-i-Azam University, ISRA University, International Islamic University, Bahria University, Hamdard University, COMWAVE Institute and Preston University Islamabad and Kohat. The second event was inter-university Qirat competition. In English debate first position was grabbed by Amber Nadeem Malik of International Islamic University, second position was awarded to Shajar Abbas from the University of Punjab, and Tehreem Gul Afridi of Women’s Institute of Science and Humanities (WISH) got the third position.

In Urdu debate, Hamza Tarar of the University of Punjab won the first position, Second position was awarded to Haseeb ur Rehman of Preston University, Islamabad while Ammara Sajjad Qazi of International Islamic University got third position.

Senator Dr. Saeeda Iqbal, presided over the bilingual debate competition and distributed prizes among the position holders. The chief guests of all the events appreciated the talent of the students. Another 120 participants of 32 universities also took part in the conference via video conferencing. Emerald Publishing Group’s President Alastair Cook highlighted various aspects of publishing. He provided an inside view on what happens at various stages of publishing and what factors authors need to take into account before they submit their article for review. His focus on ‘Publish or Perish’ provided an eye-opener for the audience. He also announced a two-month free trial for every institution in the country.

The event also included awards for institutions in terms of highest number of articles published in Emerald journals during 2011, and highest usage by the institutions. Among the highest articles published during 2011, University of the Punjab, Lahore, was on top with 54 authors, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad with 52 authors was second, while Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) was in third place with 20 authors.

The highest usage awards, during 2011, went to the Higher Education Commission, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST), COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, International Islamic University, Bahria University, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Fatima Jinnah Women University, University of Management and Technology, Air University, LUMS, and Islamia University.

Students holding placards and banners to spread the green message initiated a student organisation called ‘Environment Pakistan at Roots’, working for the protection of the environment and world peace. With the collaboration of Unesco and Environment Online (ENO), which is an internationally recognised global school network and web community, established in Joensuu, Finland, students say that no change is possible without individual participation, and that each person has the power to effect change.

An interactive panel discussion was also part of the ongoing Environment Expo, in which Dr. Azra Yasmin of the Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, Asif Javed of Bahria University and Samia Hassan of Roots College International, DHA-I Campus, participated.

The discussion focused on the need for reducing energy consumption. Dr Azra stressed that conservation of energy in every possible way could be done by thinking globally but acting locally. She briefed students on ways to save water, electricity and gas and the importance of economical recycling.

Asif Javed highlighted reforestation and plantation, climate changes, global-dimming due to global warming and land-filling for waste disposal. Students also exhibited some of their ideas about how to save the environment. RSS Executive Director Khadija Mushtaq thanked guest speakers and students for actively participating in the informative discussion.

The Bahria University has recently entered into academic partnerships with three Chinese universities by signing MoUs with Tongji University, Fudan University, China Agricultural University & Xuzhou Normal University, says a press release.

The two-day competition was organised by the CASE Business School. Two teams of Faculty of Management Sciences comprising two female students participated from the IIUI. The team that included Mehr un Nisa and Sana Sultan of FMS-IIUI won first prize in the Case Study contest.

The CASE School of Business conducted two business related contests in which students from a large number of universities participated. One contest was of case studies competition whereas the other was of Business Plan competition.

For the Case Study contest, all teams were asked to solve a case study. Two and half hour were given to the students for preparation. Following that, the participants were taken to the conference room and mentors started the debate by taking input from the teams regarding the assigned case study.

The jury concluded the results based on the interaction of the teams, ability to comprehend the case and performance in the question answer session. Teams from IIUI, Bahria University, CASE, COMSATS and NUST qualified for the second round.

On the next day, the qualified teams were again given a different case study. All participants were given one and a half hour.

There was a new panel of judges and the participants were rated according to the same criteria as before.

The team from the Faculty of Management Sciences secured the first position and won a prize money of Rs50,000 in the Case Study contest. The teams from Bahria University won the second position whereas the CASE team won the third position.

In CASE Business plan competition, 27 teams from different universities of Pakistan including those from NUST, IIUI, MAJU, SZABIST, Bahria, CASE, FAST and Fatima Jinnah Women University participated. FAST qualified for the first position and NUST secured the second position.

The BU clarification issued on Tuesday said: It is thereafter clarified that Mr Qamar Riaz referred to as Top Professor in the said report is just a Lecturer in the Department of Management Sciences, who during the course of the address of the chairman HEC on March 31, 2011 tried to disrupt the proceedings by asking questions irrelevant to the main theme of the topic. He was, as a result, asked to leave the auditorium, only after repeatedly being advised by the Rector to remain focused on the topic. Mr Qamar, however, continued to create fuss and failed to restrain himself.

This is to also further clarify that the above named lecturer, was neither roughed up as reported, nor manhandled by any official in spite of his arrogant attitude, rude behaviour and highly derogatory remarks about the management.

He was, however, allowed to attend his routine business the following day. The same afternoon he started instigating students to rise and agitate against the management. He was seen displaying a banner on his chest “Main Nahin Manta,” handcuffed himself and with his mouth gagged, kept roaming around the campus to muster support of students and the faculty, in the exercise in which he failed. Had the management taken a hard line, he could have been stopped forcefully. The entire faculty of the university, also present during the proceedings of the 31st of March 2011, took due notice of his unwarranted action on the campus, which was tantamount to creating a law and order situation and unrest amongst the students body of the institution, and which could not have been permitted under any circumstances.

In another report published in the same newspaper on the 5th of April 2011 without certifying facts wherein it has been incorrectly stated that a second professor has been sacked, and the Rector flies on vacation. The factual position is that Dr Shafqat Hameed had resigned as the HOD of Management Sciences Department and accordingly was relieved of his responsibilities as per the relevant rules covering the subject.

The Rector Vice Admiral (retd) Mohammad Haroon is on an official visit to Hong Kong to attend the annual conference of Association (ACU). The reported news that Dr Shafqat was under pressure to allow admission of certain students not fulfilling the laid down criteria, is vehemently denied by the management and is termed as totally fabricated and concocted. His version that his car was surrounded by that of an agency is also totally denied.

To preserve the very peaceful and conducive academic environment of the campus, for which Bahria University is known for several years now, the university administration was left with no other option but to terminate the services of Mr Qamar Riaz under clause 3 of his employment agreement, which allows termination of contract by either party by serving three months notice, or payment or surrender three months basic pay in lieu thereof. As such, no unlawful act or violation of rules has taken place in this regard.

To add here is the fact that the university runs its affairs strictly in accordance with the academic policies, and rules made by its statutory authorities. The management believes in the supremacy of rules and would expect others to follow the prescribed norms and code of conduct very much required for the promotion of quality education, and character building of students to groom them to become good citizens.

Umar Cheema adds: We recognise Bahria University’s right to clarify situation, however, it should have been done without compromising the facts. It has been stated that the professor under question, Qamar Riaz, was not roughed up but only asked to leave the auditorium after he created fuss.

Apart from the university’s administration, scores of students have confirmed the brutal treatment meted out to the professor who ran a campaign on social network websites mobilising colleagues for standing with the victim, the teacher sending a strong message to the administration that restraint must be exercised dealing with the dissenting voices.

Likewise, if the professor was wrong and enjoying no support of the students’ community, why the warning notices were displayed at each nook and corner by the administration directing them not to attend the peaceful protests staged outside the campus at the Shaheen Chowk.

The degree of repression in this armed forces-run university is apparent from the fact that a student told the top administration in the presence of this correspondent that he together with his colleagues feel studying in a ghettoized environment. A number of other students agree with his colleague who said they repent their decision of enrollment there.

The BU administration has further explained that the victim professor was allowed to attend his routine business the day after the unpleasant incident. This appears ridiculous as the professor was delivered a termination order the same day without either serving a show cause notice or holding an inquiry into his alleged misconduct.

Clarifying its position on the sacking of the Head of the Department of Management Sciences, Dr Shafqat Hameed, the BU clarification said he had submitted resignation well before the incident and that was processed accordingly relieving him of duties. The university administration has twisted the facts. He was not relieved but terminated instead, a fact confirmed through Dr Shafqat. It was only done after he voiced his support to professor Qamar Riaz, his subordinate.

Meanwhile, Dr. Shafqat has had his vehicle surrounded by two cars in the F-8 Markaz on Monday by, what he said, were sleuths of the Naval Intelligence who did not allow him to move an inch for hours, only releasing him after the protest being carried out three kilometres away ended.

Likewise, the BU students were warned of expulsion in case they participated in protests or expressed solidarity with the outspoken professor. The BU main gate was closed to stop the students from going out. Nevertheless, the bravos not only showed up in a reasonable strength but also resolved to do so again on Tuesday when the sacked professors would deliver lectures on the roadside on the issue of leadership. The BU Rector, vice admiral (retd) Haroon, has meanwhile left for Hong Kong on vacation, as the situation grew tense in the university. Registrar of the university, retired commodore Mumtaz Raza, was called several times, messages were dropped, requesting for his version on the conflicting situation but he did not return the calls.

Dr Shafqat who earned doctorate in management sciences is only 32 years old but has authored three books and 50 research articles in international journals. He returned to Pakistan last year with a passion to serve his country after teaching in reputed UK universities for eight years where he was inducted into the academic staff at the age of 23 after earning distinctions in post-graduation.

Dr. Shafqat, who heads the department of Management Sciences, was expecting this showdown for a long time as he confronted the university administration on a number of occasions. Now when the administration decided to sack Professor Qamar Riaz, the termination letter was to be served through him. And he refused.

Instead, he asked for a proper inquiry to establish Qamar Riaz’s guilt. It was not done and the professor was roughed up and later sacked. It followed the termination of Dr. Shafqat. Interestingly, the sacked professors are regular employees and no notice was served nor any inquiry ordered into their conduct.

As Dr Shafqat had to attend the protest rally on Monday, he was passing through the F-8 Markaz for some business and was surrounded by two cars. “Do you know who we are?” said the sleuths as they came out of the cars, Dr. Shafqat said. “I got the point that they were 7-9 persons of Naval Intelligence.” They had him locked in there until the protest was over.

Dr. Shafqat has been at unease with the university’s administration since he joined it. First, he refused to keep three children of Navy officers in MBA classes, as they did not fulfil the admission criteria. Dr Shafqat had refused to take them notwithstanding the fact they were already granted admission by the registrar’s office, he said.

“The Registrar said we have to enrol the scions of Navy officers. I said, OK but you will have to devise a policy. Then that was never done but the pressure always keeps mounting.”

Likewise, Dr. Shafqat refused to take into the faculty a female teacher, the daughter of a serving rear admiral, and he was then put on warning: “You will face the consequences.” He also faced the wrath of the administration when he bluntly refused to comply with a wish list also including a Naval officer who desired to be inducted into the faculty when he was already taking classes at the same department. Dr. Shafqat said that he had also taken up the issue of the harassment of female students by some officials of the administration. The female students submitted a written application, naming the officers who harassed them. “As I took up the issue, the administration reprimanded me for doing this”, Dr Shafqat said.

Besides being a keen and ardent sportswoman, she is a linguist with command over five languages. She has participated in three high-profile car-racing championships in 2009. She told students that she is now focusing on winning a seat in the world motor rally championships.

Students showed keen interest in her inspiring talk on motor sports along with her advice on safety measures of driving.

In the end, she paid a courtesy call on Bahria University Rector Vice Admiral (r) Mohammad Haroon who lauded her efforts in not only promoting motor sports among women, but in addition, strengthening the already existing brotherly ties between Turkey and Pakistan.
