Campus life: University of Agriculture Faisalabad UAF to set up mega civic centre by next year

FAISALABAD: The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) plans to set up a civic centre comprising of shopping malls, banks and outlets of international food chains near the Post Office.
This was announced by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Iqrar Ahmad Khan while inaugurating a branch of Muslim Commercial Bank Ltd on Saturday. Khan was flanked by Faisalabad Circle Bank general manger Ibrar Hussian and branch manager Kashif Nazir. All deans and directors were also present on the occasion.
“This university is currently housing over 20,000 people,” the vice chancellor said, adding “We need to develop a centre that will provide opportunities to residents living here and give them easy access to all basic facilities at their doorstep.”
The VC said that the banking was one of the most important sectors in the country and was playing its due role for the development of the country.
“The UAF is currently establishing an exhibition centre aimed at showcasing new technologies before the farming community,” he said, adding that the exhibition area was aimed at persuading farmers to shun traditional ways of farming and adopt modern trends that would increase per acre production. He added that using the modern techniques was the need of the hour to meet the challenge of food security which was engulfing the country. The VC said that a project of setting up six lecture theatres was also on the cards.
Ibrar Hussian said that the MCB was operating 1,200 branches with online facility across the country and that the UAF branch would also facilitate its customers with import transactions and maintaining foreign exchange accounts.
“The bank is functioning globally and we have seen a remarkable tenure of more than half a century of competitively edged and well positioned banking,” he added.
The vice chancellor said that the new Civic Centre would be ready by the end of the year and several proposals for buildings, theatres, shopping malls and sports grounds were currently being entertained by the university administration.

Dawn lifestyle show concludes

iSLAMABAD, Nov 27: After a heated debate between the young and old, three families got divided into groups and moved towards the stalls in accordance with their interest at the closing day of `Dawn All About Lifestyles` exhibition here Sunday.

“We want to see the magnificent dog varieties,” said Mahnoor, who along with her father, bother and cousins moved around the dog show area at the large and attractive lawns of Convention Centre.

Looking with wonders at the attractive canine varieties of the federal capital, all the children of the group waived at the dogs while keeping a safe distance from Alsatians, Rotweilers and others less friendly breeds.

“My mother is against having a pet dog due to the religious reasons; therefore, I like to move around this place to amuse myself,” said Irtiza Raza, another eager-looking young boy.

While her father continued to explain the kids about various dog breeds, one group of the families led by the female members moved around excitedly at the main exhibition showcasing consumer and domestic items.

“Most of the exhibitions are focused on one segment or idea but the best thing about this show is that it has something for everybody in the family,” said Zeenat, who purchased a significant amount of domestic goods, including edible items, due the attractive discounts offered by the companies.

Around 75 firms belonging to almost all the sectors had stalls and display centres at the exhibition, including construction industry, auto-makers, cosmetic, clothing, home appliances, edible diet, medicines, electronic goods, furniture makers, banks, educational institutions, health and pharmaceutical etc.

As it goes with the habits of the countrymen, the food courts at the exhibition became an immediate attraction for many families, especially those arriving late afternoon.

The sunny morning facilitated the organisers to witness a good start on Sunday with a large number of visitors thronging the venue as early as 10am, while the parking space of Convention Centre was almost filled to capacity by late afternoon.

Young ladies were eager to acquire knowledge about culture, artworks, clothing and crowded at stalls offering beauty tips.

Stalls of interior designing and furniture drew a good number of visitors but a great deal of interest was witnessed at the health related stalls.

Men and women waited in separate queues to get their calcium level checked at the stall of a firm that sells diet supplement.

“Major hospitals charge up to Rs5,000 for this test but we are conducting it free of cost here,” the visitors were told by the managers of the stall.

While taking advantage of free diagnosis, Ms Samreena took her children to the `hakeem` and got the answer why her son Shazil was looking pale and not glowing despite winter.

The first exhibition of the lifestyle series was held more than a decade ago in Karachi and with passage of time the exhibition has become a major annual attraction in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

Despite the calm and peaceful atmosphere in Islamabad, the organisers left no stone unturned on security and all possible measures were taken to ensure the safety and security of visitors.

“As they have mobiles phones, we have allowed children to move around freely at their will as we can get in touch with them anytime,” said a visitor basking under the sun, as his children were busy trying their luck at various games and lucky draw in the exhibition.

However, the best bargains were made by the late comers as stall holders of edible items furthered their discounts and offered more gifts to the visitors to clear their stocks. dawn

Inter candidates throng banks for brochures

KARACHI, Aug 10: A large number of candidates seeking admission to intermediate first year in the public sector colleges and higher secondary schools of the city on Tuesday thronged the relevant bank branches to buy brochures, containing admission/placement forms.

The process of admission to first-year classes in the city’s public sector colleges and higher secondary schools, which began on Tuesday with the sale of placement forms at 41 branches of a private bank, would continue till Aug 20.

Describing the turnout of the candidates at the banks for the purchase of brochures as “impressive”, a spokesman for the Centralised Admission Committee, Prof M. Afzal, said that except for science matriculates from the Karachi board, who have been allowed to attach photo copies of their admit cards with the placement forms, all candidates including the O’ level students and those who had passed their matriculation examinations from other educational and technical boards were required to attach their marks statements with the placement forms while submitting them at the banks.

About the candidates who did their matriculation in the general group from the Karachi board and had also received their marks statements, he said such candidates should submit their marks sheets with the placement forms.

When informed that the Board of Secondary Education Karachi’s controller of examination had already announced that the process of issuing marks sheets to special candidates and other science matriculates would begin on Wednesday and all of them would be in possession of marks sheets by Aug 20, he said those who had received their marks statement should also attach them with the placement forms.Dawn.
