The amount will cover need-based scholarships for 75 students over a period of three years (2011-14 session). The ceremony, attended by a number of student beneficiaries, was held at Elahi Building on the FCC campus. Moazzam Khan Lodhi, Mehwish Iqbal, Junaidul Hassan and Faiza Maqsood thanked the company for supporting their education.

In all, the FCC Financial Aid Office has provided 1,800 students with financial aid amounting to Rs120 million for the current academic year.

Mr Ansari, a Formanite, spoke about FCC’s contribution in developing his personality. He wished all the scholars success in life and expressed hope they would contribute towards the growth of the nation.

Dr Armacost said Millat’s leadership was in line with the needs of Pakistan by providing support to university, technical and vocational education. He hoped that by taking advantage of this opportunity, the Millat scholars would make the country strong and MTL proud.

LAHORE: The fifth Vasakh Film Festival is set to kick off today (Monday) at the Forman Christian College (FCC). The three-day festival is a joint project of FCC Department of Mass Communication and Interactive Resource Centre (IRC).

The festival will provide well-reputed national and international colleges and universities a platform to showcase their documentaries, which will then compete for a prestigious title and an award.

25 top universities and colleges from across Pakistan will participate in the documentary and fiction film competitions, whereas six international universities, including University of Oslo, Norway, Delhi University, India, and Murdosh University, Australia, have also been invited to send in their entries.

The book ‘Women, War and the Making of Bangladesh: Remembering 1971’ is written by Yasmin Saikia and published by the Oxford University Press.

Ms Saikia is Hardt-Nickachos Chair in Peace Studies and professor of history at the Arizona State University.

She is the author of numerous articles and two books, ‘In the Meadows of Gold’, and ‘Fragmented Memories: Struggling to be Tai-Ahom in India’.

The book focuses on the story of gender violence in the 1971 war of Bangladesh to probe the relationship between nation, history and women, one of the most vulnerable groups in postcolonial South Asia.

Moving beyond the external story of the war as a clash of ideologies and struggle for power between rivals India and East and West Pakistan, the author relates the story of the war as a human event of individual losses and personal tragedies suffered by both women and men.

Women talk of rape and torture on a mass scale, and of the loss of status and citizenship. They also speak of their role as agents of change, as social workers, caregivers and wartime fighters. In addition, a few men recollect their wartime brutality as well as their post-war efforts to regain a sense of humanity to reconcile and heal unresolved traumas.

By combining oral testimony with archival research in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, this book sheds new light on the social, political and cultural history of the subcontinent after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 to show the gaps between people and their governments, memories and history.

The writer highlights how important it is to study violence and know it ethically and personally to develop a human language for reconciliation between victims and perpetrators. She says individual stories of 1971 survivors articulate a collective loss of humanity that transcends the politics of history and nation.

Dr Yaqoob Khan Bangash of Oxford University Press and Dr James Tebbe, executive vice-rector of FC College, presented the welcome address.

Introducing Mr Marker, Dr Peter H Armacost, Rector of FCC, said that few FCC alumni had had such an impact on the world. After an already distinguished career in the Royal Indian Naval Volunteer Reserve, as a cricket commentator and a highly successful businessman, Mr Marker then joined Pakistan’s diplomatic service in 1965. He spent the next 30 years as Pakistan’s ambassador to over 20 countries, including the former Soviet Union, East and West Germany, Japan, Canada, France and the USA. Before retiring Mr Marker was appointed UN Special Envoy for East Timor and Diplomat in Residence at Eckerd College, Florida.

Mr Marker gave an interesting speech combining both humor and seriousness. He recalled his days at FCC, which he joined in 1940 as a 3rd year student from Quetta, with great affection. He also spoke to the graduating students on the theme “history does not teach fatalism”. He encouraged them to question and challenge received wisdom and to think for themselves. Mr Marker was awarded an honorary doctorate by Forman Christian College at the end.

Earlier, the valedictory address was given by Usman Zia Khan, the student with the highest CGPA from the graduating baccalaureate class of 2011. He told the audience how FCC had groomed him both academically and personally and that he was proud to be a Formanite. He acknowledged the hard work of the faculty in providing him with insight and core values to make him able to take up a career. He also thanked the support staff for their contribution to the four years of his degree.

The Vice Rector Dr Marcia Grant announced awards to students who had shown outstanding performance in their disciplines. The Rector, accompanied by Mr Jamsheed Rehmat Ullah, Chairman of FCC’s Board of Governors, gave the degrees. A total of 382 degrees were awarded on the occasion. These were: BA Hons: 77; BSc Honors: 154; BCS Honors: 19; BSc Business Honors: 82; MBA: 22; MAS Economics: 4; Executive MA Public Policy: 9; MPhil Chemistry: 10; MPhil Economics: 2. There were also three students graduating with the conventional 2-year BA/BSc degrees.

The commencement ceremony was attended by a large number of persons, including faculty, parents and friends of graduating students.

The top two teams in Glo-Bus from School of Management Forman Christian College were selected to play the Best-In-Strategy Invitational that featured 139 winners from other universities worldwide. These teams were placed in 15 industry groups and were invited to compete in a 15-year business simulation. The team of Faisal Pervez, Syeda Ataat Zehra and Hassan Saqlain topped their industry that mirrored competitive dynamics in the global digital camera industry beating teams that included the formidable National University of Singapore among others. The team of Ali Imran, Sohaib ul Haq and Azhar Moazzam stood second in their industry. Remarkably, while the other competing universities have all used Glo-Bus for several years, the game was used for the very first time at FC College.

As recognition of the top team’s performance, Professor Wasif M Khan, Professor of Entrepreneurship FCC, was honored by being selected for the Faculty Hall of Fame where he joins a select group of 67 other faculty members from among 2400 registered faculty from universities using Glo-Bus worldwide.

Glo-bus is used by hundreds of universities worldwide and has been developed by a team led by Professor Arthur Strickland, Professor of Strategy University of Alabama. The teams participating are judged on multiple financial and other dimensions as they make real time decisions on a number of complex business variables such as R and D, workforce compensation, production, outsourcing, product line performance, pricing, and finance in the simulated competitive space.

The documentary was made by Aisha Saeed, Asma Siddique and Ahmed Javid and was based on the suffering and unawareness of Thalassemia, a fetal blood disease, and its rise in Pakistan. It also focused on the importance of blood donation and the need for blood testing before marriage. It depicted glimpses of people suffering with the disease and showcased their dependency on donated blood.

The event was organized by UCP’s society, Jehaad for Zero Thalassemia, in collaboration with Fatimid Foundation. The contest was held to celebrate World Thalassemia Day which is observed throughout the world on 8 May. Twelve teams from different institutions of Lahore participated including two teams from FC College. After the screening of documentaries children suffering from Thalassemia presented a live act. The event ended with a walk and candlelit dedication to show support to the patients.
