Three-day gems and stones exhibition 2012 opened organised under Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company PGJDA

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan are blessed with a diverse variety of gems and stones, many of which are described as unique in the world. However, this important mining sector is yet to be exploited and facilitated by the government.

A three-day gems and stones exhibition opened here at a local hotel to not only put on display a part of the mineral wealth Pakistan is gifted with but also to draw the government’s attention towards this hitherto almost neglected sector, which can fetch billions of dollars in foreign exchange if properly developed and facilitated. The event has been organised under the aegis of Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company (PGJDA) of Ministry of Production.

On the first day, people from different shades of life visited the show, including foreigners and they evinced great interest in the gifts of nature put on display. As many as 80 stalls are part of the show.

Precious minerals in Pakistan include anatase, brookite, jade, aquamarine, tourmaline, topaz, quartz, epidote, periodote, morganite, fluorite and apatite.

Pakistan Gems and Minerals Association (PGMA) Chairman Shafiee Muhammad, present on the occasion, told ‘The News’ minerals fetched US dollar 34 million in 2010-11, which was far less than the potential, this sector had.

He pointed out only Jaipur city of Rajasthan state had been recording billions of dollar exports in gems and jewellery, as it imported minerals in raw shape, mostly from Afghanistan, and then refined and exported to other countries. Locals in Jaipur, he noted, had been encouraged to be a part of the thriving sector.

He regretted that locals in Gilgit-Baltistan and elsewhere even in the modern technological era, relied even on conservative techniques to mine minerals by dynamiting mountains that harmed the resources in a big way.

“If there is a better and supportive environment and locals are trained and then financed to buy at least facetor machines. They cannot only earn for themselves but also contribute to boosting the sector,” he maintained. A machine costs Rs0.2 million, which an ordinary man just can’t afford.

He noted great export potential of gems and stones was yet to be properly harnessed in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral and Balochistan, particularly in its Kharan district. He added the rare pink topas in Katlang area of Mardan was also to be explored and mined, as villagers resisted any such move but they can be sensitised and motivated to allow mining.

“Several stall holders here are from Gilgit-Baltistan, who mine gems and stones themselves in a very conservative way. They lack resources and know-how about properly tapping these precious resources,” he observed.

About the role of PGJDA, he said the company had established Gems and Gemological Institute in Peshawar and Gems and Jewellery Training and Manufacturing Centre (JTMC). However, he added still a lot needed to be done in this mining sector. JTMC offers free training in five related courses, including manual jewellery designing, gem stone carving and gem stone identification.

This correspondent interviewed some stall holders, who include miners, exporters and importers: they said around 70 per cent minerals were mined from Gilgit-Baltistan alone, but 50-60 per cent of these were wasted due to non-availability of the required technological equipment and skills.

“We have no access to local as well as world market. We have to visit Peshawar for cutting, processing and polishing of stones. Construction of labs in Gilgit-Baltistan and elsewhere can address this pressing problem,” said Abid Hussain, who mines stones from his own property in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Asked had there been any change after the region was given a special status and Chief Minister Mehdi Shah-led government was installed, he replied in negative and claimed, the situation was same, as it was before the new arrangement made.

Muhammad Afzal and his five brothers are in this business for over two decades and have complaints about seething negligence meted out by the government functionaries to Gilgit-Baltistan’s mining sector.

Organisers and exhibiters stress exploitation of natural resources for a strong position in the international market

ISLAMABAD – As the demand of gemstones continues to grow rapidly in the international market, there is a need to exploit
the country’s natural reserves to create a substantial niche in the international market for the Pakistani Gems and Jewellery Industry.
In order to showcase the precious stones and introduce the people to the potential of natural resources in Pakistan, a three-day gem and jewellery exhibition (January 21- January 23), titled ‘Islamabad Gem Exhibition’, started in a local hotel on Saturday.
Organised by the Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company (PGJDC), under the aegis of the Ministry of Production, the gem exhibition was an effort to support the economy of the country, besides highlighting the importance of the gems industry.
A large number of gems and jewellery collectors, traders, franchisers, retailers, students of natural sciences and women from the twin cities attended the opening day of the gems display.
Inaugurating the three-day, PGJDC Chairperson Senator Sameen Siddiqui noted that Pakistan’s gems and jewellery sector had huge potential to become a regional leader by adopting modern techniques and methodologies.
The senator said, “Pakistan is blessed with immense resources, especially minerals and precious stones. It is up to us to put in our best efforts to convert the potential into tangible gains to benefit the country and its economy.”
Speaking on the occasion, Ministry of Production Secretary Gul Muhammad Rind said that Pakistan was a home to over 270 varieties of precious stones. Comparing the gem industries of Pakistan and India, he said, “India earns up to $ 26 billion as foreign exchange by exporting only three kinds of stones while Pakistan manages to earn $ 300 million, despite having more than 270 kinds of stones.” Rind also promised to increase the revenues of gemstones industry in the coming years.
The production secretary said that the exhibition had helped showcase the best of Pakistani gems and jewellery under one roof. The exhibitors have displayed their products, including precious stones, which were the hallmark of Pakistan’s rich mineral resources and cultural heritage, he added.
Around 75 exhibitors, including dealers, distributors, exporters and retailers from across the country are participating in the three-day exhibition, with the aim of promoting Pakistani gems. The stalls displaying dazzling gems, stones and jewellery were divided into sections named according to regions, Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan. Pakistan is blessed with vast natural reserves of precious and semi-precious coloured gemstones, including ruby, emerald, tourmaline, garnet, topaz, peridot, aquamarine, spinel, pargasite, diopside, moonstone, serpentine jade, epidote, pink beryl (morganite), purple beryl, sapphire, zoisite, lapis lazuli, turquoise, kunzite and all known varieties of quartz.
Wrist watches, decoration pieces, bracelet, earrings, nose-pins, rings, and huge variety of specimens of all precious and semi-precious stones were also put on display.
The exhibition not only created an opportunity for all gem traders to display their collections but also offered a chance to the public to witness the rare gemstones and minerals of Pakistan.
Talking to Pakistan Today, gemologist and designer from Lahore Zeeshan Ibrahim said, “The purpose of this display is to introduce gem industry of Pakistan to the locals as these gems are valued by foreigners only.” He said that the samples of the precious gemstones attracted the foreigners in particular, while very few locals, who have knowledge of these stones, were interested in buying them.
“Normally, the samples of gemstones have no price tags. It varies from customer to customer, the samples of gemstones are in real natural shape thus they cost higher than the refined pieces,” Ibrahim said.
While highlighting the potential of the exhibition, he said, “Pakistan’s potential to become one of the world’s largest resources for brilliant gems will get a fillip at the exhibition. The country has a rich tradition of showcasing exceptional quality of precious stones, which adorn some of the most exquisite jewellery designs made by the world’s prominent jewellery designers.”
Salman Saeed, one of the organisers, said, “We intend to provide exhibition space for the young and dynamic jewellery designers who are thriving in Pakistan. We would like to link them to the international markets so that they are able to understand the global trends and compete with the well-known designers from all over the world.” EU Ambassador to Pakistan Lars Gunnar Wigemark said, ‘It is an excellent and well-organised display as it showcases everything Pakistan has in term of precious and semi-precious stones, which is excellent.” The exhibition attracted a large number of female foreigners in particular.

SLAMABAD – Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi said on Wednesday that the AIOU regional campuses at Umer Kot, Dasu, Rahim Yar Khan, Loralaye and Gilgit Baltistan would start functioning soon.
He was addressing a meeting arranged by the representatives of the Officers’ Welfare Association (OWA). Dr Sangi said that 0.6 million students enrolled in AIOU in each semester from across the country, reflecting people’s trust in the institution.
He said that the AIOU was the backbone of the education sector, educating students for the socio-economic uplift and progress of the country through job-oriented curriculum. He added that he had made every effort for the welfare of all academicians, officers and employees of the university, without any discrimination.
He said that the university’s regional campuses at Umerkot, Dasu, Rahim Yar Khan, Loralaye and some remote areas of Azad Kashmir and in Gilgit Baltistan would start functioning soon. Computer labs, comprising of 10-20 computers and at least one video-conferencing system would be provided to each regional campus, he added.
The AIOU VC said that internet facility would be provided to the university’s residential colony and the Day Care Centre would also be improved. Dr Sangi said that an Officers’ Club would be established and the employees would be granted interest-free loans from the welfare fund.
On the occasion, newly-elected OWA President Mukhtiar Hussain Talpur thanked the voters for their trust in the OWA and requested all officers to work hard for the progress of the university. pakistantoday

Classes in the newly-established medical colleges in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad will begin from January 1, as planned. The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed was told this in a briefing on Wednesday.
He said the colleges should have a fixed quota for students from all over Pakistan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), Gilgit-Baltistan, Indian Kashmir and overseas Kashmiris. The AJK PM said they were committed to promoting education, especially medical education in the state.
He advised the principal to complete everything well before the deadline and to have both the colleges prepared to start classes on the same date. The PM said that the required resources have been already provided to the institutions and promised more funds if needed.
The Prime Minister said that the colleges should be on the same standard as other public and private medical college in Pakistan. He added, “These colleges will cater to the needs of the whole country, and should be converted to medical universities.”
Earlier Principal Dr Muhammad Iqbal said that notifications on the medical colleges were issued in 1984, but it was the present government that finally implemented the decision. Seven labs, an auditorium and lecture halls have been built, in addition to the appointment of 22 senior doctors as professors.
Dr Iqbal said modern learning sources and campus management systems will be introduced in the colleges and that both the colleges are affiliated with Sheikh Zayed Hospital and Abbas Medical Institute.

An art exhibition titled ‘Travel Pakistan’ was held here on Monday.
The Mass Communication Department of National University of Modern Languages (NUML) organised the exhibition in which students capitalised on their talent and earned applause and admiration from the visitors. “The exhibition is actually a humble effort to project and cherish different colours of Pakistan and to give a glimpse of its rich culture and art through the medium of oil painting, calligraphy, illustrations and posters,” said programme coordinator Amina Zulfiqar.

The event was basically the work of latest graphics, traditional art and calligraphy. It aimed to provide hues and colours of all provinces by using the graphics and latest tools of digital media.

The students of Mass Communication contributed paintings, calligraphy, posters, photographs and illustrations. The beautiful oil paintings of interior Lahore and traditional Islamic calligraphy in the medium of gold by Wasif Shahid were also displayed in the exhibition.

Moreover, pictorial illustration of a poem ‘Taut Batot’ by Sufi Tabassum was published in Adobe Photoshop by Noor-e-Sehr, a student of Mass Communication, while posters depicted a gateway to the rest of Pakistan — Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The students told this scribe that they could not expect that their amateur work would draw such a great response from visitors and all that applauses have encouraged them for more efforts and hard work.

Earlier, NUML Rector Major General (r) Masood Hasan inaugurated the exhibition. The programme coordinator briefed the NUML rector and other guests on the exhibition.

The commitment came during a ceremony held to mark the 64th Independence Day of Gilgit-Baltistan held at the Islamabad campus of SZABIST.

The colourful event was aimed at sharing the moment of joy with the students belonging to GB, a home to diversified culture and ethnic groups. Sharing their sentiments, more than two-dozen students of the region said Pakistan today is in need of national unity and the young generation can play an extremely vital role in this regard. They said that the youngsters of GB have great quest for education and knowledge and if given ample opportunities to excel they can make Pakistan proud in the comity of nations.

SZABIST Director Syed Asad Hussain sharing his personal experience on the occasion said it was heartening for him to see rising interest and awareness towards education especially at the primary level. He said GB is not only rich in terms of human resource, but also tourism attraction, but both the resources in his views are not being tapped as effectively as these should have been.

It may be recalled that the people of Gilgat- Baltistan got freedom from the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir on November 1, 1947 through their own resources, they established a new state of their own, Raja Shah Rais Khan became the president while Mirza Hassan Khan the Commander-in-Chief of the Gilgit scouts.The news.

Gilgit-Baltistan Gilgit-Baltistan Student Council of Quaid-i-Azam University celebrated the 64th Independence of Gilgit-Baltistan from Dogra Raj at the Rawalpindi Arts Council.

Gilgit-Baltistan Finance Minister Mohammad Ali Akhtar was the chief guest on the occasion. All student councils — Mehran, Seraiki, Balochi, Punjabi, Pakhtun — were present there to show solidarity and celebrate the Gilgit-Baltistan independence day with them. The students aptly organised the whole function where they presented the culture of Baltistan through dances and songs.

On their independence day the Gilgit-Baltistan Council of the Quaid-i-Azam University appoints their new members of the council. In this regard all the Student Councils’ chairmen congratulated the newly-elected Student Council and the caps were exchanged between the chairmen. Mehran Council, Saraiki Council, Pakhtun Council, Balochi Council and Punjabi Council gifted their ‘cultural caps’, ‘dastar’, ‘pagri’ and ‘ajraks’ to Gilgit-Baltistan’s newly elected Chairman Amjad Ali Hunzai and he in exchange gifted and dressed them up with ‘Gilgiti cap’.

All the student council presented their own cultural dance that was much appreciated by the students. Typical Gilgiti dance with two swords was also presented by a student. Since ‘Shina’ is spoken in Gilgit-Baltistan a song in that language was also presented by a student. The chief guest Mohammad Ali Akhtar while speaking on the occasion said that by the Grace of God Gilgit-Baltistan is blessed with crystal clear rivers, countless glaciers and mountainous ranges, Himalaya, Hindukash and Karakoram and beautiful valleys. He said that today Gilgit-Baltistan was freed from the Dogara Raj and allied with Pakistan.

He said that Gilgit-Baltistan was included in national stream because of martyrs and Bhuttoism. Mohammad Ali Akhtar said that Gilgit-Baltistan remained under the control of bureaucracy and it was neglected till 1974. He said that in spite of declaring independent province, Gilgit-Baltistan has not been given complete provincial autonomy and its struggle will continue till the achievement of goal. “There should be no confusion in the fact that why we are celebrating our Independence Day on November 1st, we are not separate from Pakistan that got independence in 1947, but it is because that we defeated Dogra Raj in 1947 and since then we are celebrating our independence. Then we decided to become a part of Pakistan in 1947. It is a tribute that we pay to our martyrs who laid their life for our independence.

It was a historic moment for us that we chose to be a part of Pakistan. The present government has recognised our services and given us a status of a province but we will only be completed when we’ll have representations in National Assembly and Senate. Here we want to tell each and every Pakistani that we are standing behind you and in every crisis we will support Pakistan,” he said.The news.

Youth Performing Art Festival organised Rafi Peer Theatre LAHORE

LAHORE Rafi Peer Theatre has organised a Youth Performing Art Festival from October 11 –15.
The festival aims at supporting the young of the day in their chosen artistic enterprises in the ways of performing arts, enabling them to foster their traditional arts and preserving a rich culture and heritage.

The Rafi Peer Theatre plans to expand the areas of performance to include various remote regions of the nation. It also plans to instigate a new addition to the celebration of its exceptional cultural heritage by incorporating this amateur performing arts activity drawing on talent from around Lahore. The festival aims to raise awareness of the dwindling forms of performing arts from the areas that are generally too remote for their artistic heritage to be seen on national and international stage.

The festival has 78 acts including theatre groups, music, dance, film and documentary screenings. There will be more than 17 theatre groups, 21 musical groups, 15 dance acts and 25 documentaries

The representatives from Norway and India will also be performing. The national regions that will be introduced this year include Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa, Gilgit Baltistan, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Hazara, Hunza, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Faisalabad and Gujrat. Rafi Peer Theatre is a non-government non-profit organisation that promotes art sand culture in Pakistan. It was founded in 1974. It has grown in these past three decades to include not only theatre and puppetry but also a host of other art forms in its repertoire, becoming Pakistan’s largest organisation in promoting arts. pr.

Pakistani Students To Leave For Study In USA

Islamabad:As many as 126 graduates from all over Pakistan will be departing for studies at universities in the United States on the Fulbright Scholarship Programme.

During the Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) arranged by United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), the grantees were briefed by USEFP about the programme, visa regulations, American culture, US higher education and campus life and adjusting to life as a new student in United States.

The Fulbright Programme is the flagship academic exchange program of the United States Government. Funded by the US State Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the awards cover travel, living stipends, health insurance and tuition for the entire period of study.

The 126 students who are travelling to US would include 94 in Masters programs and 32 in PhD programmes. Of these, 37 per cent are women. The grantees come from AJK, Balochistan, FATA, Gilgit-Baltistan, ICT, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh and include a wide variety of academic disciplines including 29 are studying some aspect of business, 21 engineering, 19 social sciences, 12 public policy/administration, 11 education, 7 fine arts, 6 mass communications, 6 technology, 6 law, 5 health-related subjects, 3 computer sciences, and 1 in basic sciences. The students are required to return to Pakistan after completion of their studies to play a positive role in the country’s economic development.

“We are very fortunate to have the world’s largest Fulbright Program in Pakistan. This is one example of the U.S. government’s long-term commitment to the education of Pakistanis and to increasing mutual understanding between both countries.” said US Embassy Public Affairs Officer Mark Davidson.

HEC Chairperson Dr. Javaid Laghari encouraged the students to concentrate on their studies as there is rising demand of higher education and particularly PhD’s in Pakistan across many universities nationwide.

The Fulbright programme in Pakistan is administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), now celebrating its 61st year of operation in the country. Since 2005, USEFP has sent 1,180 people advanced degrees on Fulbright awards for Masters or PhD degrees. Nearly 40 per cent of these grantees are women.

“Opportunities for Pakistani students to study in the US have never been greater”, said USEFP Executive Director Rita Akhtar. She congratulated the departing students saying, “This was a very strenuous and transparent competition. We know you will represent Pakistan very well in the US and return to make a real difference here.” USEFP, a bi-national commission established in 1950 by the governments of Pakistan and the United States, is one of 51 ‘Fulbright Commissions’ located throughout the world. Fulbright is the flagship educational exchange programme of the United States Department of State. The mission of the programme is to promote mutual understanding between the people of Pakistan and the people of the United States through educational and cultural exchange. Since its inception more than 61 years ago, nearly 4,000 Pakistanis and more than 800 Americans have participated in USEFP administered exchange programs. In addition to the Fulbright program, USEFP administers a number of scholarship programs for undergraduates, teachers, journalists, and other professionals.

In addition, USEFP offices in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi assist students interested in applying to study in the United States. USEFP also runs testing centres in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi administering the TOEFL, SAT, GRE, and other standardized examinations.The news.

Punjab University, IMS Peshawar win HEC debate contest
Islamabad: University of the Punjab, Lahore and the Institute of Management Sciences (IMS), Peshawar won the 13th Allama Iqbal Shield Debate Contest for Urdu and English categories, respectively held at Higher Education Commission (HEC) secretariat on Thursday.

As many as 30 debaters, six from each region ie Balochistan, Federal (Islamabad, AJK, Gilgit Baltistan, and FATA), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh qualified to participate in the final round of 13th All-Pakistan Inter-University Debate Contest for Award of Allama Iqbal Shield.

National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Chairperson Nafisa Shah was the chief guest on the occasion. HEC Chairperson Dr Javaid R Laghari was the guest of honour. This annual feature was organised by HEC in collaboration with Ministry of Education.

The individual winners of the contest included (English) Wasim Gohar, IMS Peshawar, Shamaoon Ahmad Shaikh, University of the Punjab, M Afzal Hamayun Khan, IMS Peshawar (Urdu) Ghulam Moyuddin, University of the Punjab, Syed Kashif Ali Shah, Islamia College University, Peshawar and Nafeesa Habib, International Islamic University, Islamabad.

The winning teams (comprising two debaters) along with one overall winner except the members of the winning team, both in Urdu and English, from every region become eligible to contest in the final round in which top teams of the Debate Contests. Both in English and Urdu, were given Allama Iqbal Shield and 1st, 2nd and 3rd position holders (English and Urdu) were given cash prizes of Rs 30,000/-, Rs 25,000/- and Rs 20,000/-, respectively while every contestant was given a certificate and a replica of the shield.

The teams, comprising two debaters from each region, qualified for the final round in English Debate were: Balochistan – Syeda Um-e-Habiba and Shahzad Hassan Jaffar (Iqra University, Quetta); Federal Area -Jawad Ali Shakoor and Muhammad Faisal Fateh (Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Islamabad); Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa -. Wasim Gohar and Afzal Humayun Khan (Institute of Management Sciences, Peshawar); Punjab – Syed Shamaoon Ahmad Shah and Umar Riaz (University of the Punjab, Lahore); Sindh -Muhammad Noaman Panhwar and Mansoor Ali Soomrro (University of Sindh, Jamshoro).
