BRITISH Council Pakistan will set up International Education resource centre at LCWU

BRITISH Council Pakistan will set up an International Education Resource Centre at Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) with the partnership of the university’s Faculty Development Centre.

According to a press statement, it was decided during a meeting of LCWU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Sabiha Mansoor, deans and heads of departments with the representatives of British Council Pakistan here Friday.

Ms Nadia Kamran, head of Education UK, British Council Pakistan, said that the purpose of setting up this student hub was to promote and enhance international education programmes with the expressed goal of increasing knowledge transfer, student and staff mobility and best practices sharing between the academic communities in Pakistan and the UK.

The British Council will facilitate, build the capacity and mentor 18 faculty members at LCWU in the following areas: Career counselling, transnational education, linkages and research collaboration, digital aspects of internationalization, coordinating activities and publications, attracting regional students, business entrepreneurship, staff and student mobility and social entrepreneurship.

Ms Kamran said that selected faculty members would be trained for 6-8 weeks after that they would be kept in constant touch through meetings, e-mail, Skype and video conferences so that they could enhance their administrative and managerial faculties to uplift their institution nationally and internationally. Appreciating British Council for its cooperation, Vice Chancellor Dr Sabiha Mansoor said that her vision that LCWU ranked in the top 500 universities in the world and setting up education international recourse centre would help her take varsity on that height.

Islamabad the International Education and Resource Network (IEARN) Pakistan-Centre, in collaboration with the United States (US) Department of Education, organised the 12th International Education Week (IEW) 2011 at a local hotel on Thursday.

The theme for IEW 2011 is ‘International education: Inspiring Students Locally to Succeed Globally’.

In a time of global connectedness, business and culture, any true education for our young people must have a strong international dimension, the chief guest of the event US Consul-General Karachi William Martin said. “Young people have to learn to think globally given the world’s interconnectivity, both technologically and economically. For instance, Steve Jobs was just as big a hero in China as he was in the United States. And now we see how Europe’s economic troubles can affect us all. The world is truly a global village,” he said.

The IEW celebrates the benefits of understanding the world around us so we can better communicate and collaborate with different cultures. It is an opportunity to inspire students to broaden their horizons through global learning, foreign languages and exchanges, he added.

According to Martin, the US government has the largest Fulbright Fellowship Programme as well as a large English Access Programme, which sends hundreds of Pakistanis every year on study experiences at high schools and universities throughout the United States.

Over the next year, we would be partnering with the United States Educational Foundation Pakistan to reach out to even more young people and spread the word that America welcomes Pakistani students to our college and university campuses, he announced.

“We believe that, getting to know each other personally, and seeing each other’s cultures up close, we can foster better understanding, more tolerance and closer friendship. And it is the young people who will make that happen. We hope to encourage more young Pakistanis to bring their ideas, knowledge, culture and perspective to enrich our institutions of learning,” he said.The news.

ISLAMABAD The US Embassy in Islamabad hosted a ‘Window on America: an Educational and Cultural Exhibition’ on Wednesday culminating with the 12th annual International Education Week (IEW) college fair featuring Embassy officials encouraging Pakistani students to consider US colleges and universities for their higher education options.

Collaborating with the US Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), IEW is a joint initiative of the US Department of State and Education to celebrate the importance and benefits of international education in US and around the world. Theme of IEW for this year is International Education: Inspiring Students Locally to Succeed Globally.

IEW promotes the US as the destination of choice for Pakistani students looking to further academic and research skills at some of the world’s finest universities.

US universities and colleges enjoy pre-eminence throughout the world, notably in science and technology. A record number of international Pakistani students enrolled in US during the academic year 2010-11, an increase of five per cent to 723,277 from the previous year. Last year 5,045 students were studying in US.

Mission Director of Communication at US Embassy Thomas Miller said, “In today’s global economy, it is essential that professionals in all fields have a knowledge and understanding not just of facts and figures, but also of foreign cultures and societies”.

“Academic opportunity is only one reason to consider studying in US. When students from different countries and cultural backgrounds sit together in classrooms, they exchange new ideas, break down stereotypes, gain knowledge of diverse cultures and make connections that last a lifetime.

This is a wonderful way to bridge the differences between people, encourage peace, understanding and build a stronger world economy”, he added.
