DCET principal commits suicide
Karachi: The acting principal of the Dawood Engineering College (DEC), Dr Salman Baloch, allegedly committed suicide on the college premises here on Monday.
SHO Chaudhry Saeed confirmed the incident took place on the college premises in the Jamshed Quarters police limits.
According to initial investigations, Dr Baloch had been upset about his health and other personal matters.
On Monday afternoon, he went to the third floor of the college where he told his peon, who usually was with him during such visits, to leave him alone.
Later, Dr Baloch was said to have gone up to a window and jumped off to his death.
SHO Saeed said that students and staff present there immediately took Dr Baloch to the Liaquat National Hospital (LNH), where he was pronounced dead. Later, the body was taken to a government hospital for legal formalities. The SHO said that doctors in their initial examination report told the police that Dr Baloch had committed suicide, but the cause of death would be confirmed later after the completion of medico-legal formalities.
SHO Saeed said that Dr Baloch first served as a lecturer and was later promoted as a professor. For the past 20 to 25 days he had been serving as acting principal and facing difficulties.
He had written a letter to the authorities, requesting them to replace him with someone else as principal. The matter had been pending. Dr Baloch had been suffering from diabetes, a heart condition and an eye problem. He was said to have been suffering from some problem with his legs as well. He left behind a widow and two daughters. He was a resident of PECHS. A case has been registered and investigations are continuing.
